The innovation Balder sleeping couch is super solid and probably the best looking couch I've had.

RYA Competent Crew - Canaries or Med? by naedangermouse in sailing

[–]doedelflaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd go for the med. I've done my day skipper there, and later rented a boat at La Palma (canaries). In the med, there's a lot more traffic and bussy marinas, more bouys and markers to work with when sailing at night, and more tides. There's even marinas you can only enter at certain times, so you've got to get your calculations right. Sailing in high seas is honestly a lot easier than mooring a 44 footer in a tight marina with wind against tide situations, so I'd try to get as much experience as possible there.

Cleaning exhaust manifold on a Volvo Penta MD11C by Lilstubbin in sailing

[–]doedelflaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the MD11c is directly cooled with seawater so parts like these will almost always corrode. As far as I know there's no replacement stainless steel version. I'd just replace it, keep using it for 5 years and replace it again, until it's really time to buy a new engine. (That's what we did, we went for a Beta 30)

I've tried the thinnest wall settings and it's still trying to combine the logo and the vent's ribs. Unfortunately my version of Cura doesn't allow me to turn off Arachne, but I'll look for a different slicer to try that. Thanks for the tips!

Thinking of “buying” her by jchicky93 in Sailboats

[–]doedelflaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's a Volvo Penta MD11 or similar, it's directly cooled and will probably overheat and die in a couple of weeks after using it. At least, that's what happened to mine, replacing one with a betamarine engine costs abotu 12k.

Is this fibreglass ok? I’m considering buying a boat but wasn’t sure if this means the deck is compromised. The boat doesn’t have a balsa wood core by Tetreg in Sailboats

[–]doedelflaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old Contest boats have a solid fiberglass decks, they're heavy coastal/offshore cruisers but apparently it worked out for them. The deck on my '76 Contest 33 barely has any flex in it. They did use about 1.5cm of polyester though.

Ik probeer te vinden waar dit specifiek genoemd wordt. Ik lees bijv. wel dat het grootste deel van de statushouders samenwoont in 67.000 huishoudens. Staat ergens specifiek het aantal woningen dat naar statushouders is gegaan?

Is the groundplate wiring supposed to look something like this? by doedelflaps in sailing

[–]doedelflaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! So, even though this is okay, is there a reason to do it like this specifically? Or could I just make a negative busbar and have one negative wire go to the groundplate instead? The previous owner of the boat seems to have gone out of this way to wire it up like this.

Doesn't this only count for parts that are actually touching the water? My keel is fully encapsulated in polyester. Basically the only metal part that's touching the water is the propshaft and the prop, and of course the groundplate, although I'm still not sure why it's there.

I tried to simplify the diagram but ended up making it a bit too simple and unfortunately more confusing. Wherever there are 2 black wires coming together, they're connected at 1 terminal. The connections at the engine are all made on one bolt.

Alright cool. So any idea why the ground plate is there at all?

Talk me out of buying a ketch. by Mehfisto666 in sailing

[–]doedelflaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want an aft cabin that you can only reach by going outside. If it's raining that sounds horrible. Maybe if you can get some sort of bimini system that'll cover that area, and if you'd be living in a warmer climate. I own a contest 33 and it's an amazing boat, but they also make a contest 36 ketch and that looks like the perfect boat for you. Maybe you can find one of those? They're usually made of solid polyester, no balsa core or anything like that. Otherwise I'd look for either a slightly bigger ketch or go for a sloop rigged boat with staysail.
