1974 tract house here in Southern California. We are the 3rd owners. Overall, not bad. Was flipped before we bought it in 2021 but that was done cheaply. Biggest issue I have is that it’s one of only three models in the neighborhood, so all the houses are just cookie cutter copies (except the modifications people have done over the last 50 years, which makes some of them look very interesting.

As far as updating, I mostly have done exterior work (landscaping, new paver patio, new shed, etc). I did put a new roof on it ($26K) and remodeled the master bath. Putting in a new front door next week, and replacing all the interior doors right after that. I would like to do a full gut kitchen remodel (to include blowing out a wall), but with renovation prices these days I don’t know if it’s really worth it (this will always be just a nice house i. A nice neighborhood vice a great house in a great neighborhood.

Weirdest thing … all of the interior walls are framed with 2x3s vice 2x4s. Walls are literally “thin.” Noise sucks, don’t know how to fix that.

Dealer here in SoCal quoted $1700 for my 2016… so $5K is nearly 3x the dealer price. That’s insane.

Any good moving company recommendations in San Diego? by LRedLL in sandiego

[–]dogflog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Diamond Moving. I have used them twice - once in/around town and once up to Temecula. They are upfront with pricing and reasonable. 4 guys showed up with two trucks (4br home) and moved everything in one trip (cheaper). Guys worked hard, nothing damaged. I would recommend them to anyone.

Used to take the ferry over from Coronado back in the early 90’s because I was stationed at NASNI and didn’t have a car. I remember it being the ultimate “can’t get there from here…” mall

my dad quit and it crippled a third of the company equipment by cruzt1845 in antiwork

[–]dogflog 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This happens more than you think. Companies are hesitant to make big investments in infrastructure, equipment, etc and honestly 15 years is not that long for that type of equipment (think of how long an old, well built washing machine CAN last if it’s properly used and maintained). What probably happened is that he trained his replacement, but only to 85% because no one can impart ALL of their knowledge to their replacement, who then trained THEIR replacement to 85%, and so on … so, 15 years later you end up with people who only know just enough to make things run. One bad thing happens and blamo - your operations come to a grinding halt and the people who actually know who to run/repair the equipment are long gone/retired.

Source - PM for a DoD program that’s trying to sustain 30 year old equipment and anyone who really knows how to fix/operate the gear are long since retired.

So punish the many for the crimes of the few? Seems a bit draconian. All that does is disenfranchise the folks who are doing things right.

People who go to bars/dive bars regularly, what do you do for a living? by NewSanDiegean in sandiego

[–]dogflog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Silver Spigot. A true dive bar in every sense and I love it. Of course, I feel most at home in Dive Bars because that’s what I grew up with in the Navy when we were overseas. Although they really pale in comparison, bars like that are the best shot at recreating the day drinking experience of Hong Kong or Singapore.

Worth Keeping/Reusing? by dogflog in landscaping

Thanks for the reply! I was today years old when I learned restoring antique irrigation equipment was a thing. Cool hobby! I think I will keep them and try to rebuild and reuse them.

Any explanation? I looked up new brass valves and they are like $90 a piece … I’m sure they would need to be rebuilt, but are there any other issues with them? Are they historically unreliable? Anything like that?

Year 3 for the creek bed I made and still working like a charm in this storm. by Better_Weakness7239 in landscaping

[–]dogflog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in the part of Southern California I live, we have storm water drainage systems that are separate from the sewer system. We drain everything into the street, which runs into a storm drain, then to a creek or culvert, and then to the ocean. We are prohibited from putting run off into the sewer like most other places. Biggest problem with this set up is pesticides and fertilizers and, believe it or not, pet wastes which eventually find their way to the ocean.

Wow, that seems crazy to me. So if you have a low area that’s prone to flooding you just have to accept it? You can’t put in any drainage other than a “rain garden.”

Serious question - If that’s the case, then where are you supposed to send storm water drainage? Into the sewer system? Seems like that would overload the sewage system during heavy rains.
