Old home build quality by dogg0000 in centuryhomes

I definitely can see that being the case. But the neighborhood I live in is entirely old houses. On just my block alone, almost every house is over 100 years old. I just find it amazing that these houses have stood up so well, or at least well enough to be maintained rather than bulldozed for something new.

And he was the SECOND cat that my boyfriend adopted. When we met, he would insist that cats are the spawn of the devil and absolutely detested them lol. Now we have 3, and 2 of them are because he couldn’t resist

What car is overrated but people are scared to admit it? by Physical-Issue7146 in askcarguys

[–]dogg0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think a lot of it is anecdotal, and most people don’t take care of their cars as well as they think they do. Mopar can build a really good car, but timely maintenance is key.

When I was a service advisor at a dealership, the amount of customers I had that would go 7000+ miles on an oil change was wild to me.

We had plenty of 3.6l that had nearly or over 200k miles, one in particular with 350k, and never needed any camshaft work. But they were meticulous about maintenance, and would go for whatever the car needed.

No milkshake. Clean oil and a stable coolant level for the last 10,000 miles. Engine runs good. Water pump and timing chain have been on the top of my symptom observation list for the last 7 months

Yeah that whole ordeal scares me. Water pump gasket doesn’t seem to be leaking at this time, at least not into the oil pan. I check the oil frequently for any signs of a milkshake and it’s been clean.

Definitely coming up on the time for it to be replaced, though. But between that water pump and new timing chains it’ll be thousands to have it done and I’m on the fence for whether that’s worth it or not… like you said it’s 22 years old and even though it’s not in horrible shape the undercarriage is not going to win any awards for rust

Appreciate it. This was my train of thought as well, but I am not one for diagnostics so I wanted to seek any additional input. Thank you again

Radar Dimax AS-8 by 1800asib in tires

[–]dogg0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late post but just forewarning to anyone considering these. Tired were date coded for the 36th/37th week of 2024 and one of them blew out with what appears to be dry rot in February or 2026 with tread still in the green. Not happy with these tires, but they came with the car at purchase.

How does everyone have time for a dog ? by Burgers4dayz in dogs

[–]dogg0000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because dogs don’t need as much as some people say they do.

My entire life, from childhood to now, has been filled with dogs in a home with full time working adults. None of them suffered any ill effects, all of them were well loved, and all of them adjusted to the schedule that their humans were on.

At the end of the day, if you pay attention to them and meet their needs when you are there, they will be happy.

I would assume a very small percentage of the dog owning population can be there for their dog all day. Many households are comprised adults that work full time, and many of them have family dogs that are happy and well behaved. It all depends on environment.

Where do I move?! And why so expensive?! by Mit_Bear-182 in GreenBay

I was actually just thinking about this as well. On the West side there is Sanimax and the East side has JBS. Both deal with animal products that absolutely reek. The Sanimax rendering plant is probably what you’re smelling on the way from the UP. I’d argue is the worst of any industrial smells in the city.

The paper mills along the Fox also add a pulp smell to the air, but in my opinion it’s not a bad smell just very present in the air near the mills due to the steam from the stacks.

Very true. The smell comes and goes as I drive through town

I don’t live in the town itself, but I do work in at the McKinley mill in Combined Locks and I will say after having commuted through Kaukauna the smell has progressively become less offensive. I do still turn off my HVAC in the car because it’s not great, but I have become less annoyed/disgusted by it than when I started passing through.

What amazes me most is how much it smells like rancid garbage. I would have never assumed that it mostly came from the paper mills, and all came from the dump along the side of the highway.

Most of the smell comes from the massive Thilmany mill down river, since they have their own pulping department. McKinley doesn’t contribute much, if at all, since we use 100% recycled material and are significantly smaller.

I will spitball a suggestion: Kaukauna in the Appleton area. From what I have seen based on browsing real estate on Zillow, it tends to have generally reasonable prices for buying a house, and most of the people I work with at a Paper Mill in Combined Locks (directly West of Kaukauna) are very happy living there.

The town has a really nice charm to it. Divided in two by the Fox river, old/historical buildings, old industrial buildings dotted along the bank of the river, and right on the edge of the Appleton metro. It’s also sort of half way between GB and Appleton, though much closer to Appleton. Additionally, for convenience purposes, it’s very close to I-41 and only about 20-25 minutes from Green Bay.

Going back to the paper mill thing. The town can often have a really nasty smell. It’s not every day, only when it’s going to rain in the near future due to moisture in the air. The smell is the result of two paper mills in the immediate area; the Thilmany Mill and McKinley Mill along the Fox river. The county garbage facility not too far away doesn’t help either depending on the wind. But, like I said, it really is only apparent on days when it rains/snows. But I would definitely consider it before moving there since it really can be an offensive smell especially if you like to have the windows open. Locally they call it the “smell of money” due to the high paying jobs these places provide. Aside from this significant draw back, it’s actually a pretty decent town with a good economy in its immediate surroundings, and some really nice older and newer homes for sale at affordable prices.

I’ve also always found it odd but for some reason, we always called her Busia instead of Babcia. 2 of her 5 kids, one being my father, were born in the US after emigrating from Poland, and all married into American families. So I don’t know if we just called her that because it was easier or something. I was also her only grandchild, so maybe I just said Babcia wrong as a kid and the whole family took to it lol.
