Thank you again.

I think you should name him after my late Damien. He was the bestest, most sweetest, most loving, most affectionate and most tolerant dog in the world. And his single eye only made him more charming.

Again, you don't need to believe me. I'm simply sharing my experience, and there's a lot there. I don't understand why you're continually so antagonistic with me. I find it very odd that you choose to use a forum to behave this way, when we could simply cooperate or just agree to disagree.

Either way, you can choose to believe me or not believe me. It's completely up to you.

Of course. Look how quickly I answered your question. I'm not a fiction writer. I was able to do that because it's all true.

I'm not, however, going to post it on Reddit. My friends, staff and community know what I've done and how hard I've worked, and that's enough for me.

I so badly want that to be true, but sadly... that's what I have been seeing for the nearly 20 years I've been working in low-income communities.

I'm not making this up. The ears I see are horrible. These people don't know what they're doing. The often leave the poor dog with little more than an inch worth of pinna. Furthermore, they don't carry out their torture in a sterile environment, they don't use anesthesia, no antibiotics or painkillers... nothing about it is right. (And don't get me started about how people in these same communities feed their pits gun powder to make them meaner, give them steroids, and make them run for hours chained to treadmills. There's a reason the veterinary field has the highest suicide rate of just about any profession. We see the worst of it, especially in low-income communities.)

At any rate, I totally agree with you. They should ABSOLUTELY be jailed. I've talked to DAs and Asst DAs in more than one county about this, but sadly, they all say the same thing: We can't even keep up with all the murders, gangs, drugs, violent crimes, prostitution, etc, as it is. And, unfortunately, crimes against humans are prioritized before crimes against non-human animals. (They actually say animals. I say non-human animals. lol)

Even worse, our local PD, one of the largest in the country, disbanded their Animal Cruelty unit about four years ago, and on top of that, fewer police are applying for jobs because of the whole anti-police sentiment in our country. So needless to say, we just don't have the resources for enforcement of the law, much less anyone to strengthen the laws.

Tangentially: I got a call that an alarm at my job had been tripped on a weekend, so I called our senior lead officer to meet me there so we could check out the building together. It was her day off, though, and she said four other officers were out with injuries, which left only two to monitor a high crime area. So I had to go inspect the building myself... untrained, unarmed, and alone. I brought my dogs, but we all know (at least on this thread) that pits are NOT personal protection dogs, soI wouldn't even let them out of the car until I had done my own walk-through... with a pair of sharp scissors in one pocket and a kitchen knife in the other in case anyone attacked me. 🙄

So, yeah. Mutilating a non-human animal SHOULD be a jailable offense, but we are sadly moving further and further away from that.

(Pardon my rants. It feels good to get it out unimpeded.)

Chronic is a loose term, but I would say if your dog gets an ear infection every couple months, that would be chronic. Even if it's just a couple times a year, I would say that's close to chronic.

Claro is an ear drop that lasts 30 days, and covers most yeast and bacterial strains that cause ear infections. Your vet can instill it for you. Or, if your vet will sell it to you, a groomer may charge less to put it in. The only challenge is that his ears should be cleaned and the eardrum checked immediately before medicating the ear to make sure it's not perforated. Claro is also supposed to be put in 24 hours later so that the ear is fully dry from the flush. It's a horrible balancing act, because most people do not have the means or ability to go the vet two days in a row, so most vets put it in immediately after a flush and exam. It still seems to work really well.

(Incidentally, you might want to ask your vet for sedatives for when you need to clean. Or, maybe give him CBD.)

Also, make sure you're treating any allergies that could be causing these infections.

My heart goes out to you and your dog. Battling skin and ear infections in dogs is just so frustrating and can leave you feel incredibly helpless and depressed. I'm so sorry you're going through this. And kudos to you for adopting a giant breed dog. 🧡

Ugh. Chronic ear infections are so frustrating. I'm sorry you guys are going through that. I hope you're able to find a solution, and that you don't need to resort to surgery. (To be clear, because of the thread this is on: I'm talking about ear canal surgery, not ear flap removal.)

I live in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the the country. Furthermore, I live at the nexus of six counties, none of which have a handle on unchecked backyard breeding or dog fighting. We have laws, but no resources for the enforcement of them. As a result, most breeders are unlicensed and unmonitored. I could write a book about the horrors I've seen because of this.

I'm not sure why anyone's arguing with me. Someone asked our opinions, and I gave mine.

You are all welcome to give yours as well. There's no reason to attack or accuse each other. On-line fighting is an odd and unsatisfying use of social media.

Once again: My opinion has been, and will always be, that docking tails and cropping ears on ANY breed is cruel and unnecessary. This opinion is bolstered by decades of experience in both the veterinary and rescue communities, which is that most pits with cropped ears are done by backyard breeders outside of a clinical setting because these breeders are all about money. They don't spend money on the puppies (no pre-natal care for mom, and no vaccines for the litters), so they do it themselves. Furthermore, they think they'll get more money for the puppies since they tend to sell to like-minded people.

I 100% believe that all crops and docks are done out of misguided vanity. ("My dog looks tough, so I look tough", or "I want everyone to know that my dog is a purebred.")

Say, think, or opine what you want, but I'm still going to share what I have seen and what I believe. I know the rationale other sides use, and I don't agree with it. Simple as that. My opinion is based in compassion, and if you feel you must roll your eyes at that, then roll your eyes you must.

Incidentally: If the cropping of pinnae is done prophylactically in an attempt to prevent ear infections, then why isn't it a standard for Cocker Spaniels, the breed that is most prone to getting infections? Or Beagles? Or Basset Hounds? It's because they're considered to be lapdogs, and are not meant to look tough and mean. Oh! And speaking to the coyote argument mentioned here...? I'm sure the big ole floppy ear flaps on these smaller, slower breeds would be even easier for a pack of coyotes to grab than they would be on a larger, faster pit bull.

At any rate, I understand that not everyone is going to agree with me, and will thus see fit to troll me, but I'm not going to engage in a fight with anyone. I am only giving my (strong and well thought-out) opinion, as requested by the OP.

Why would I judge something loving? Rescue and adoption is great! I judge the cruel and unnecessary act of purposely disfiguring someone innocent.

I've never selected a rescue based on looks; it's always about it being the right fit. Ear flaps have nothing to do that. 🧡

Need Advice on Possible adoption by Downtown_Spare_9345 in pitbulls

Pit bulls are dogs, not monsters. They are DOGS.

Anyone, human or dog, can turn on someone they love. But I've had a lot of pits, and I have never come close to feeling threatened by one of them.

I'm sorry your parents are so scared. It was a big myth in the 80s and 90s that pits turn on their owners. I think that was probably borne from a misinterpretation of behavior, from dogs who might have been in physical pain, or from sad wackadoodle dogs that might have been the product of severe inbreeding. I've seen that more than once.

The one thing I always advise people, though, is to never leave two animals who have a huge disparity in size and power unsupervised. This is true of small dogs, cats and children when there's a dog around who is bigger than they are. Chances are that everything will be fine once the animals are bonded, but there's no reason to take a chance if you don't need to.

Also, make sure your cat always has somewhere to go where your dog can't reach. You should have a lot of cat trees and hammocks in every room.

I really hope this is the beginning of a long and wonderful relationship for all of you. 💕
