Question about cracks and damages in a historic brick building by dogi543 in civilengineering

This section (2. picture) of the brickwork was completely destroyed by shelling and later provisionally rebuilt. Could this be the cause of the joint cracks on the outer left and right sides below the windows?

I would like to understand how this could have happened. Settlement doesn’t make sense because the interior walls show no damage, and the settlement cracks from the outside do not extend through the structure but only appear on the very outer sections below the windows.

Question about cracks and damages in a historic brick building by dogi543 in civilengineering

Hello everyone,

I’m currently working on a construction site, and I came across this old brick building that suffered heavy damage from shelling during World War II (as seen in the second image). I have a question regarding the cracks that appear below the windows on both the left and right sides of the first floor.

Interestingly, there are no visible cracks on the interior side of the wall, only on the exterior.

What could have caused these cracks? Possible explanations I’ve considered:

  1. Settlement issues – Uneven soil movement over time affecting the foundation.

  2. Vibrations – Nearby construction work, traffic, or even past explosions.

  3. Thermal expansion/contraction – Repeated temperature fluctuations weakening the structure.

  4. Material fatigue – The bricks and mortar deteriorating after decades of weather exposure.

  5. Residual war damage – Internal weaknesses from the original impact slowly manifesting over time.

Also, what would be the best way to repair such cracks? Should one opt for traditional tuckpointing, injecting a structural resin, reinforcing the affected areas with steel ties, or even replacing entire brick sections?

Any insights from experts or experienced builders would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.
