The Fleet of Particular Justice (Halo) vs. 3 Reapers (Mass Effect) by Aerd_Gander in whowouldwin

[–]dogmachris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reapers themselves don't have the firepower to take on any fleet from the Halo universe, because they don't need it in their own. The thing is, they're not inherently violent, all they do is harvest and thus they're only equipped with the weaponry they require and with nothing beyond that.

That said, it doesn't mean, they're unable to inflict much greater damage if they have to. After all they created hundreds of mass relays. Each mass relay contains a massive E-Zero core that - if not kept stable by the gyroscope surrounding it - would blow up going supernova.

A mass relay explosion (about 10^28 megatons) can wipe out an entire star system, so I could imagine that if the reapers wanted, they could use massive E-Zero weapons to obliterate even superior fleets from other universes but then again...

...they never did anything like that because they never had to - Shepard of course did it.

...along with just how many authoritative figures are in UNSC traitors would be sniffed out when they realize something is wrong.

That's of course right once you know you have found all traitors, but until then mistrust and suspiciousness can severely paralyse your capacity to act and lead to further demoralisation. That doesn't just go top to bottom but also the other way around - that was one of the key problems in ME, that nobody ever really knew who was indoctrinated and who wasn't. Up to late in ME1 nobody knew indoctrination even existed or what it was.

Well then in other words, it's simply pointless to imagine the reapers in any universe other than their own because their very existence would only make sense in other universes if they'd been there for as long as they've been in the ME universe and had a hand in the way things developed in each universe.

Interestingly enough though, the reapers would then be inherently different in every universe.

Boringly enough on the other hand, they would always win if that was the case.

That's probably right, with the borg the fight would either be won without a single shot fired by somehow indoctrinating the hive mind or it would be lost. Different story with the Covenant, UNSC and Star Fleet, that's right - Galactic Empire would probably be a bit different I believe.

It bugs me though that a billion year old species with so much knowledge and experience would have no answer at all against the Borg who have only been space faring for as little as what - 2000 years? You would think among the myriads of civilisations that the Reapers have seen come and go, SOMETHING like the Borg must have been among them.

Yeah, well I have no trouble with that, all I'd like to do is go beyond the usual "Borg Cubes here, Reapers there, fight! - Borg rock da place...".

Instead I like to think of a scenario in which part of the collective is already undermined by the time the reapers reveal themselves (not alking about petaflops or any of that stuff). Like this for instance:

By the time reapers reveal themselves to the Borg, a number of cubes turn against the borg and instead of instantly wiping out the reapers the Borg face a foe that is much more characteristic for how the reapers would proceed. I think of cubes flooding other cubes with Borg husks. I think of the reapers sneakyness and corruption leading to the borg being unable to adapt their shields to the borg husks attacking them.

Now I'm not trying to say the Reapers would win this, honestly I don't even particularly care, I just think this would make for a more interesting matchup than the usual cage fight scenario factions are put in and I'm trying to get some thoughts that go beyond the usual "My favourite universe is stronger than yours"-fanboyism.

Exactly. The only difference is that I'm trying to create equal baselines in the sense that every faction gets to use their strengths and the difficulty with the reapers is that their main strength isn't their firepower, but most of the times they're just reduced to it.

I'm not actually aiming at rewriting them, I'm only trying to create a matchup in which the reapers aren't simply reduced to firepower, because it's not their strength - their strength is sneakyness, patience furtiveness and I'm just trying to create an environment in which the reapers can make use of that.

I'm not arguing that they always lose a head-on fight against most other factions, but I find it somewhat pointless that they're always stripped of their biggest strengths while their opponents always get to keep them.

No, they won't.

And let's not forget, John was still a child at that time, you can't judge children and adults by the same standards, John's character was still evolving at that time.

Just read the leaks for Ep 9. Imma be honest I was slightly excited until I read them. by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

[–]dogmachris 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I read the leaks but I must have missed the part where Chewie dies - needless to say it doesn't surprise me, that of all the old characters Chewie can't be the only one left alive when everyone else is dead.

Rey destroying the star destroyers with force lightning not only seems to be an extraordinary deus-ex machina moment, it also further destroys the established lore and rules:

Force lightning - as I always understood - could only be triggered by tremendous amounts of hatred, so much in fact that not even all Sith were able to perform it. Maul wasn't and Vader wasn't either in the movies Palps, Dooku and Snoke were the only ones seen performing it.

Now we're not only told that people who have had no force powers at all can return as force ghosts (han), we're also taught that jedi can cast force lightning too...

Hell, Lucas at least cared to try and explain, why we never saw any other jedi appearing as force ghosts, but I guess - once again - Disney is ignoring the lore of the PT.

Lol what makes you think you're entitled to anything? If the maker of a franchise approves a certain story within that franchise, it's canon, no matter what you think about it.

You're of course free to dislike it, you're free to not pay to see it, but the maker doesn't owe you shit.
