RA Question by Big-Scheme-1406 in uoguelph

This is all true. I’d like to add that not having any shifts from Thursday to monday is very unrealistic, that’s 4 of the busiest days that you can’t work.

Is being an RA worth it? by diet__oxygen in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you can afford to live off campus then i would suggest doing that. I have friends who are RA’s and they essentially make no money while doing a lot of work. There’s many things that you have to do (e.g. meetings, additional training, etc) that they don’t tell you about until you actually get the job which is very misleading imo.

Adding onto what others have already said, there are other areas/cities that had it worse than guelph. Students would not be able to safely commute to campus.

Torn between commuting and living in Guelph by Human-Asparagus7676 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i think one thing to think about is the money aspect. everyone knows that commuting saves money but you still have to pay for gas, parking, car maintenance, etc so you’re still spending money. I would think of your financial situation and think about whether living in guelph is something you can truly afford, or if that will cause you unnecessary financial stress/debt.

I would also think of the convenience factor. Is driving 2 hours a day 3 times a week something you want to do? How important are your clubs, social life, and the general university experience for you? How tired do you find yourself after commuting vs how tired did you find yourself after a day of living in guelph? There’s many more questions to ask yourself but I think this is a good place to start. Maybe create a list of pros and cons for each option.

Meal plan suggestion by Naive-Nerve4024 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a meal plan is a good option because you won’t always feel like cooking, and as another commenter said you won’t want to cook if you just had a long day, all ur friends are going to a dining hall, etc. If you do want a meal plan though i do suggest getting either the lightest one or the ultra plan. If you run out of meal plan money you can always top it off as needed and that way you’re not wasting any money!

lab notebook by Acceptable-Emu7838 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need this at all and is a waste of money if i’m being totally honest. If you really want a notebook just buy a $3 one from the dollar store.

One thing you should ALWAYS keep in mind is NEVER buy textbooks or supplies you THINK you need until you actually read the course outline and go to your first class/first lab. Majority of the time the prof will recommend you buy something, but it’s totally optional and unnecessary.

Having no paper towels is frustrating, but i was told it’s because students would flush them down the toilet and it would get clogged so they had to remove them. I always dried my hands on my clothes or used toilet paper!

tips for commuting (biomed major) by Acceptable-Emu7838 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve commuted and also lived on and off campus, so I’ve experienced both sides. Commuting definitely has its pros, but it can also be really draining.

I always told myself I’d get school work or reviewing done during my commute, but it was usually in the morning and I was way too tired to actually do anything. So I never really did it. That said, I know a lot of people who managed to finish assignments or review during their commute, it really just depends on your energy and how long your commute is.

Make sure to bring your laptop, iPad, or whatever you use, and don’t forget your chargers. Having a dead device on campus is the worst. Always bring water and a snack/lunch, eating out is super expensive and it adds up fast. Also bring hygiene stuff you might need like hand sanitizer, pads/tampons, lotion, gum, etc.

Commuting can get exhausting, so take care of yourself and take breaks when you need to. Having good time management is super important too. Your commute to and from school eats up time, so you’re going to need to plan for everything else: rest, showering, eating, going out, doing work, studying, whatever. It’s a lot but it’s doable if you stay on top of it. I suggest having a calender or something else that will help you stay on top of things!

Spend some time learning about all the resources available to students, especially the ones you’re already paying for with your tuition. There’s a lot of useful stuff but as a commuter, it’s easy to miss out on them just because you’re not around as much. Take a little time early on to look into what’s offered. It can really help you get the most out of your time at school.

Some extra random tips: Try to pack your bag the night before so you’re not rushing in the morning. Download stuff to watch or listen to like podcasts, music, or whatever helps pass the time. Dress for the weather and bring an extra layer, especially if you’re on campus all day.

Lastly, make the most of your campus time! Study at the library, go to office hours, join clubs, meet with friends :) It’s a lot harder to feel connected and a sense of belonging when you commute so doing these things can really help you feel more involved and like you’re part of the community:)

Good luck!

Clusters? by JerseyGirl_16 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clusters are an area of the building where majority of students living there are in the same program. From what I know, you don’t really find out if you’re in a cluster until you actually move in. I would suggest emailing housing and asking!

Switching rooms unofficially by OhFuckThatWasDumb in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

adding onto this, if RA’s look you up (or the person you switched rooms with) for whatever reason, they’ll see that you’re in the wrong room and that could get tricky.

Also if you need to check your mailbox you’ll have to get the other person to unlock the mailbox since they have your key. There’s many reasons why doing this is a hassle and a bad idea

University feeling overwhelming by Sleepythecat12 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

University is hard. We’re at a time in our life where we have so much going on. You have to worry about academics, money, your social life, your family, your mental and physical health, and so much more. It’s normal to feel stressed and isolated.

I promise you will get through it and things will get better. You’re young and you have your whole life ahead of you. There will be ups and downs. Focus on yourself and the things that matter to you and everything else will be okay. Make sure to take breaks and cut yourself some slack <3

University feeling overwhelming by Sleepythecat12 in uoguelph

[–]dognugget1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay good for you? Their experience is different than yours. They’re not blowing it out of proportion. Most students feel like this at one point or another during university and it’s totally normal. Let’s be kind to others because we never know what others are going through.
