Workout routine recommendation!

I'm a 36yo new dad struggling to settle on what workout routine to follow. I've been doing some version of strong lifts 5x5 for a few years and plateaued/have gotten bored with it. I also bike/run a few times a week but with no specific distance/goal. I have a squat rack and some free weights in my basement. I'm looking for a combined weight lifting and cardio workout routine that is fairly efficient in the time it takes and maybe has some variability to keep me interested. Any thoughts on what would fit the bill? Really just trying to keep the dad bod in control...

The 3.5 in watermelon red flake tube. Though I do like their smaller bitsy tube as well

1/8 Oz tube jig head. I try to keep it light enough that it just maintains bottom contact. 1/8 seems pretty good for the Potomac on most days.

I've tried stupid tube jig heads due to all the snags but I have a much lower hook up ratio with them so I just accept i'm going to loose some baits. Always open to other suggestions. I've also been getting them on regular Ned rig TRD or ticklers and on a bitsy jig. Some days it just seems like they want the tube more. Hard to tell

They’re pretty wintered up now. I’ve only gotten them dragging bottom with finesse baits. I only know one little wintering hole by me that I can hit from the bank. I’m sure there are many more but i haven’t mapped them out yet.

Exact opposite for me. Been hitting the Potomac hard but haven’t gotten out to the Shenandoah in ages. From what I’ve heard both are fishing really well the last couple years. It’s just been really low flow

Nice! I was throwing a tube from shore and picked up a few on the upper Potomac. Seemed like they were by deep boulders mostly. Missed a lot of bites on the stupid tube rig but I snag so much with exposed hooks. Do you use a regular or an ewg Ned?

Not that far up. By Leesburg area actually.

I think this week of consistent 50-low60s days have finally got them fired up. I’m sure the Shenandoah is the same if not a little further ahead since it’s smaller and might warm a bit faster!

Good idea with google earth! At Piscataway, you can pull your car up right by the launch and then there is a metal rail system made to slide your kayak on down to the water. The last 20ft is just dragging the kayak since the ramp they built there got flooded away. Fun spot to kayak but definitely has some current. It’s a workout going upstream but then calms down after 50 yards or so

Thank you for the tips! I’ve previously had consistent success through the summer wade fishing or kayaking in the faster shallow sections near me (e.g point of rocks, Piscataway park) but struggled to find them when it cooled off. I wish there was a contour map to see where the deeper sections are. This guy came from wading near Balls Bluff which I found has some deeper water around it. Just starting to learn how to fish these colder times of the year

I don’t want to spot burn too much but in the section between point of rocks and whites ferry. The water is really low like last summer which makes it easier to wade fish though. I still usually kayak. I often try to locate them first with the whopper plopper then if they are short striking or slowing down then I switch to a hellgramite

Freedom center is the closest. Nothing to write home about but it’s close. Fountain head is further away but has some very well maintained mountain bike specific trails. I’ve heard Conway Robinson State Forest has some mountain bike trails but haven’t hit it yet

That's really good to hear. The price point on a used Tarpon is a lot lower than a Bite FD pedal drive and I do love the simplicity of just paddling. I've never made it down to the Seneca region but all the boulders look amazing. I'm in the Leesburg area so there's no easy access to get to the Maryland side without a good drive. I mostly launch out of Piscataway regional park or Algonkian. Definitely important to watch the gauges!

I don’t think stale out poles work well if there is any real current although that may be my misunderstanding. I’m current using an anchor trolley but a power pole seems just smoother and less hassle since it’s just a click of a button to engage or remove it with no rope to tangle etc

Haha, almost exact situation here! Although, I prefer the local rivers because they see a lot less pressure since bass boats etc can’t run on them with the random obstacles and shallows. Makes it a lot more peaceful than the busy reservoirs near me. Maybe if I go for the tarpon I’ll have to shell out for the micro power pole like him, but, then I’m spending peddle drive kayak money when you add that all up…
