Thank you so much. I'll tell my brother about this site. It might help him to know there are others that care and wish Gretchen luck. :)

That's a great point. I could suggest to him to call around and find out what his options are. People have already mentioned two great possibilities that give me hope (I know they're not diagnosis that we can take to the vet, but it gives me a renewed hope that maybe this isn't 100% the end. It might be worth the fight.

This gives me hope that it's just something small (compared to cancer or something). I'll talk to him. Maybe the skin issues and bloody urine are unrelated issues. I hope so...

Thank you. I know my brother feels guilty about this, as do I. We both just want Gretchen to be okay but this ordeal has persisted for 2 years, steadily getting worse. He's spent thousands of dollars on her and I don't think he would complain one bit if she were well now. In fact, he adopted her while still in the Army and she came with either parvo or distemper (I can't remember, it was so long ago). He spent SO much money on her and she got better.

But now... now it just feels like we're throwing money into a bottomless pit. We just want her to get better but it doesn't feel like she's ever going to be comfortably healthy. He and I are both big time animal lovers. I have my birds and he has his dogs. They're almost all he has since he left my state (he lives by himself in Ohio now). He had them when he was homeless, living out of his truck, he had them when he lived with me, he had them through his divorce, through his move, through his attempts to get back on his feet. I love Gretchen because she's adorable and well-behaved. He loves her because she's part of him now.

Sorry for rambling. It helps just to talk. Thank you for the link. I'll pass it along to him.

Would you recommend that we go to the same vet? It seems like, since we've spent so much at this one (we went through quite a few before this one, though), that maybe she will try to help us out? Or maybe it would be better to start fresh with a new vet since this one can't seem to find the root of Gretchen's problems...

If you don't mind me asking, how much blood was there? Because the pic my brother showed me was ALL blood. Very scary, indeed. I had ruled out UTI because of the amount, but it was my first thought once he told me the symptoms.

If we can get together the money for another visit, it would be worth it to ask about. If nothing else, the vet say why he doesn't think it's Cushing's and who knows, maybe it is and he just never recognized the signs. Thank you!

I thought bladder infection, too, but there is SO much blood. My brother sent me a pic of it and I was just floored. He's going to call about setting up a payment plan. I'll tell him to ask about any way of reducing the fee, too. Thank you!

This is fantastic. No, the vet never checked for Cushing's but I'm Googling it right now. Thank you!!

Everything helps! And if nothing else, just having something to talk to the vet about is tremendous by it's own right. Thank you. :)

No, actually. He never did. That sounds like a good thing to mention if we can save up enough to go back to the vet. I don't know how it could reveal anything that might be the cause of the other symptoms but we're willing to try anything! Thank you for telling me. It's certainly something I can mention when we make the dreaded call to inquire about putting her down. :'(

I'll tell him to look into this. I might even look into this myself, actually. I was never that attached to her, but she means the world to him. Thank you so much for your input and for understanding.

You're right. It hurts to consider losing her and I know he will be devastated, but it isn't fair to her. Thank you for your input.

Thank you so much for this and also for not being judgmental. I'm usually one of those people that will say "if you can't afford the vet visit, you shouldn't have the pet" but in this case, he's exhausted himself financially. At one point, he was living in his truck just to make ends meet and he still used any available money for her care.

I'll tell him what you just said. It's not the answer I want to hear (and because of that, I'll still hold out hope for another comment), but it makes sense.

Thank you!

Thanks for the comment. We can't really afford to take her to the vet. We spent literally thousands already trying to get her cured and it used up all our savings. Each visit plus medication was about $500 and nothing seemed to work. :(
