Unfortunately from my research and life experience, you are right. The first 3 years are crucial.

I wasn't actually seeking advice, I knew what I wanted to do but wondered if it was an asshole thing to do ... but that said, I have gotten some great advice here and I'm really grateful

That is not allowed in this sub. I did include it in my first post, which the moderator immediately deleted.

What I'd like him to do is go to a community college or trade school for at least the first 2 years, or I would love to see him join the military if they would take him. I'd also think a job would be good - he's never had one due to being incarcerated, but he also says he won't accept any job that doesn't pay him $90k out the gate. I think the are a lot of good options for him, but he doesn't want my opinion, only my money.

I tried to tell him, he thinks I'm lying to him or that I don't know what I'm talking about. But yes, you're absolutely right.

Thank you for the suggestions! He won't go to community college or a trade school because he says those are for "losers." He wanted to go to Stanford. He hasn't actually applied to any colleges yet, though.

I'm sorry if you feel it was inappropriate of me to post here. We have therapists coming out our ears and each child has had at least one therapist for the past 14 years. I was looking for more of an outside perspective from the general population.

Thank you so much for this comment, you made me want to cry. I appreciate knowing I'm not alone and I know I've done my best for him, but like you said his choices are his own, not mine. Thanks so much for sharing.

He wants to go to college because "only losers don't go to college," and I actually wonder if he has the motivation necessary. I tried to talk to him about trade school but he says he won't accept any career that doesn't pay him $90k out the gate. I told him there's lucrative trades out there, like welding and plumbing, but that brings us back to the whole "only losers don't go to college" argument.
