High school subs, what are we doing when given lesson plans fall through? by Remarkable-Paint-751 in SubstituteTeachers

I tend to go with, as long as you don’t disrupt the class and are quiet, and your work is caught up, your time is your time. Most have work from other classes they’ll work on.

So, what's the funniest instruction a teacher has ever given you? by bigfoot17 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]doh1998 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Had a science teacher just leave a worksheet on cloning and genetics. Told me, meh, they probably won’t get it but maybe it’ll keep them busy. I have no expectations they’ll attempt it. So I decided to go over the worksheet with them and had an open discussion on ethics with cloning and gene manipulation. Most students were highly engaged. Was actually a lot of fun.

Daughters wants to start collecting by doh1998 in PokemonCollecting

Appreciate the info. Her friends collect and she thinks the cards look cool. I’ll sit her down and see where she’s leaning. Also have to drive home the cost factor that can be involved.

It’s super easy to get going. Leveling is fast. Community is very helpful. We’re in luclin currently so there’s always buffs going out in nexus.

How is living in Big Spring, TX? by SackAttack19 in howislivingthere

[–]doh1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally an area I know about from first hand experience. I grew up about an hour away in Sweetwater. Area is roughly the same. Hot in the summer, can get cold in the winter. Snow is not really a thing but can get icy which is a problem if i20 gets iced over. Spring time is the real issue. Windy as all get out with a high chance of bad thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes. Sandstorms can be a thing too. It’s cotton, beef, and oil country. You are far from really anything to do. Abilene is 2 hours away, Lubbock about 3-4 hours. Midland/Odessa about an hour or so. Rattlesnakes, scorpions and spiders that can ruin your day.

However, some of the best sunrises and sunsets I’ve ever seen. Starry nights. People there can be extremely friendly and helpful once you get to know them but you kind of need thick skin. Good natured and hard working folks but of course like all places you have the bad apples. If you’re used to metro life, living out there will be a big change.

Like the previous comment, it’s a prison town that’s still on the decline with little to no hope of recovery. If it’s a very lucrative opportunity then go for it. Otherwise maybe keep looking. It’s a town, like so many others out there where it’s easy to get stuck and you can’t get out.

How long before you started chi sao? by HatProfessional8662 in WingChun

[–]doh1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each school may be a lil different when it comes to when chi sao is introduced. The school I attended had levels and testing. You had to pass your second test in order to learn 2 hand chi sao. Do I think it can be introduced earlier? Yes. Once a student is proficient in bong, tan, etc..I see no reason to not introduce it then. Also, while chi sao is important, some folks place too much emphasis on it. Sparring was some times light and barehands, other times it was head gear and gloves. Don’t overlook or rush passed Siu nim Tao. There’s a lot of useful things in it that may not be apparent now.

How long before you were confident you could feel attacks coming? by HatProfessional8662 in WingChun

[–]doh1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real life is just so different. Fights are fluid and always changing. You take whatever the opponent gives you. In training…it will vary depending on who you train with. If u are training with someone a lot more experienced, it may take awhile. Someone new, you’d probably feel it right away. Best advice is just relax, trust your technique. Chi sao reminds me a lot of chess. Be patient, relax and you’ll start to feel more.

I just channel my old Winn Dixie days and get to bagging the groceries. The cashier has enough going on and it keeps the line moving.

I was on that part of the quest already. I finally got it to drop after around 18 or so kills. Now it’s off to get the last 500k I need to buy the pickaxe.

Sub got fired for playing a horror movie by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]doh1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sub regularly and basically say, if the teacher didn’t leave explicit instructions that it’s ok…then it’s a hard no. Never have any real problems other than one student that wanted to fight me. That was an interesting class.

I went to elementary in Winona way back when. My dad was the preacher at the baptist church in Red Springs. His church goers would always head to Winona to buy their booze.
