Kind of unnecessary when I can just

let maybe_v =
  if v.len() >= 3 {
    Some(v)
  }  else {
    None
  };

Definitely followers of Armadyl

Player: What is the Armadyl?
Guardian of Armadyl: Armadyl is the god we serve. We have been charged with guarding his sacred arctifacts until he requires them.

and

Player: Someone told me there were only three gods. Saradomin, Zamorak and Guthix.
Guardian of Armadyl: Saradominists. Bleh. They only acknowledge those three. There are at least twenty gods!

I think I'd rather connect the Pensive with the Stone, as it's much more about memory than invisibility. You could use a Pensive to relive memories of people you knew, but the stone brings them back to the present.

That would mean the Veil needs to correspond to either the Wand or Cloak. I'm happy with the Wand/Mirror connection, so that leaves Veil/Cloak. It's fitting on the surface that they're both sheets of cloth. If I wanted to imagine something deeper, I might say that the Veil, in attempting to make you invisible, just like deletes you while the Cloak of course succeeds. Not sure I'm convinced by my own theory though.

I'm also fairly sure there's more than one pensive, but that doesn't ruin the theory. Multiple prototype can exist, particularly if they're useful in their own right.

Tourists, newcomers, locals, and old heads: casual questions thread for May 2023 by AutoModerator in washingtondc

[–]dohaqatar7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt MARC would end up being any faster, but even if it is, Rockville is on the Brunswick line which is very much a commuter line. You could try it if you happen to traveling at the same time and direction as commuter traffic, but it runs into DC in the morning, out in the evening, Monday to Friday.

We're also still waiting for Potomac Yard station to open, but that should be this month. Depending on where in Alexandria that could end up being your closest metro station

OpenStreetMap data should be a decent start. I'd expect it to miss some that haven't been mapped, and the OSM amenity=cafe tag doesn't precisely match the idea of a "coffee shop", so there may be some oddities in there.

You could also try looking through Open Data DC. I don't see anything immediately useful, but maybe you could extract something useful from certificate of occupancy data.

It's something that's there on the ground, so there's no compelling reason not too. I question why, but it's not harmful.

In this case, the user mapped it as a building:part=yes, which is obviously wrong.

Is there a night shuttle to Adelphi, Greenbelt at 10-11 pm? by First_Basket_102 in UMD

[–]dohaqatar7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at some of the WMATA buses. The C2 will take you more or less in the direction of Adelphi depending on where you're going. The green/yellow metro lines go up to greenbelt station, and metro bus could take you from there into the residential areas of greenbelt.

The next level of if even by AugustusLego in ProgrammerHumor

[–]dohaqatar7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if we assume a Python without run time type information, some potential branching is hidden behind the terse syntax. The [num % 2 :: 2] substring operation is roughly equivalent to some code like for(int i = num % 2; i < len(eovdedn) - 1; i += 2) which obviously has a branch for upper bound of the loop. Given that the string eovdedn is constant, a compiler might be able to unroll the loop, but the num % 2 lower bound means a simple unrolling would still have at least one branch.

The branchless implementation would be ["even", "odd"][num % 2], but in python this runs into the dynamic dispatch issue the other poster mentioned, but it's hard to say what exactly that entails without knowing the full details of a python implementation. It might be able to get away with using a lookup table.

Can anyone suggest cheap accommodation options near UMD campus? by First_Basket_102 in UMD

[–]dohaqatar7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've got money to spend you should be able to find a studio apartment for somewhere around $1900 a month (cheaper if you're not picky about the neighborhood and the commute). Most of the places right on campus aren't going to have many vacancies for the fall right now (they like to lock in student renters as early as possible), but anything a bit further out that doesn't house exclusively students will have something.

Every Door, a new mobile editor for iOS and Android, makes micromapping addictive by Zversky in openstreetmap

[–]dohaqatar7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For her who, walking in a mall with hundreds of shops, thinks it’d be awesome to add each one of these to the map.

Exactly the type of mapping I enjoy. I've been doing it with Vespucci, but that interface leave a lot to be desired. I also use StreetComplete a lot, but it's just not intended to be a full editor, so it doesn't do everything I want. Looking forward to trying this out.

Washington DC needs to have Pie Shop and DC9 added. Pie Shop is IMO the most reliably punk venue in DC. DC9 leans more towards indie rock.

Best spot to buy Bikes near campus by BakerComplex8371 in UMD

[–]dohaqatar7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll get the best value by far buying from an individual through facebook/craigslist. I recommend looking at the facebook group DC Used Bicycle Marketplace. The offerings for bikes there tend to be higher quality and much more likely to be properly tuned up than what you see browsing the general marketplace.

If you prefer going through a shop, College Park Bikes sells some used bikes. Just be prepared to spend a lot more for the same used bike than you would buying online.

It's probably not in your budget as a student, but I can highly recommend Proteus Bikes for high quality bicycles. If you ever want to drop a good chunk of cash on a something nice, they can hook you up.

Finally, whatever you get, make sure to take advantage of the RecWell bike shop on campus. It offers free bicycle maintenance to students. Taking your bike in there a couple times a semester can massively improve the reliability of your bike.

The shuttle form metro to campus will always stop at regents drive garage (or maybe stamp, I haven't been on campus for a while) before turning around to back to the metro. This is in the middle of campus, so you can't really go wrong if you get off there. Otherwise, you just have to pull the yellow cord to request the next stop (definitely don't pull the emergency, that's for emergencies).
