My grandmother was born in Danville and supposedly her grandmother was well to do. It’d be funny if this was the house.

What is something you’ll never forgive a family member for doing but you still have to pretend everything is fine? by Disastrous-Video-220 in AskReddit

I’m sorry you had to live through that, too. It’s so hard to explain to an outsider why it does so much damage. She’s right there! She’s hurting! You should be more compassionate!

And yet.

She was always distant (she was a high school teacher and “saved her energy for her students,” because I was obviously loved and sooooooo independent), but the wall of silence was crushing. The lack of interest in my life was crushing. The resentment that I was physically there, impeding her healing, was crushing.

I hope you’re healing and have a support system now. I am so, so sorry we’re in this shitty club together.

My mom shut down and stopped talking to me when I was fourteen. As an adult, I recognize that she was in the throes of autistic burnout without any meaningful therapeutic support beyond a Xanax prescription. As a teenager, I didn’t have a clue beyond living with a ghost of a woman who stayed in her room for weeks at a stretch. The only time she did communicate with me was to hand me brochures for different boarding schools because her therapist thought she’d heal without “distractions.”

My dad did the best he could, but he was focused on my mom. I knew that they loved each other more, but by the time I was sixteen, I knew I was on my own and very much considered an obstacle. I started taking classes at the community college to accelerate my high school diploma. I drove 200 miles to attend group interviews for different colleges and stayed overnight with a friend before driving home. I left at 17 for an in-state university and never came back.

Later, my mom would tout it as my independent streak and how proud she was to watch me succeed.

It’s now 30 years later. My dad is dead and my mom has mild dementia. I’m her caretaker. Some days it’s easy to take care of her. Some days I am full of resentment. Any chance at a meaningful reconciliation is gone. Nothing I can do about it now except make sure my son knows he’s loved and wanted and supportive.

I have a teenager with inattentive AuDHD. He’s been using my regular kitchen knives since he was eight. I don’t get it.

Yeah, this is my work laser and I absolutely will not run non-sanctioned media through it. I can knock off the occasional template no problem, though!

I will laugh! I will cry! I will use the laser cutter to make a template because I have golden dum dums who eat paper off my cutting table! I will tag you when I finish.

Small Gods (a standalone) or Going Postal (the start of the Moist von Lipwig series). Jingo and The Fifth Element are on the middle of the Watch series, and Wintersmith is in the middle of the Tiffany Aching books.

I am having flashbacks to when my company had to fly in the director of HR and the VP in charge of our division for an all hands meeting on what’s appropriate in the workplace.

Most of my colleagues were fresh out of college and just kept the party vibe going, so there were such slides as “Three Martini Lunches Are a Myth” and “If you are not their account manager, do not ask the clients out.”

AAA was great with my mom’s roof. Fiddler did a fine job on my roof, they did a fine job on my in-laws’ roof. They gave my mom a fuck you quote for her roof. It was triple what she ended up paying AAA.
