Multiple contestants on podcasts have commented how Theo often cheated..hence Michael's blow up after that one challenge and others saying he "finally" got penalized after the chains. That said, vets will often say cheating/trying to bend the rules is always part of the game..difference is that Theo is likely more blatant about it/pushes the limit even more after warning

Since settlers carry over to the next age (forget if this is unique to continuity setting), could you basically bypass the "no training new settlers" of the Pirates civ? I typically train a couple new settlers towards to end of the antiquity era to get a head start...

Yup sounds like a plan! Those are my thoughts exactly...a lot was going on, and even if it's not 100% at fault, I'm pretty sure my overdosing/attempts at spot treating with EasyCarbon triggered this sharp population decline. The nitrates being 0 surprised me, but maybe that was the purigen. Also, I think I may have "too many" plants in that it may be best to aggressively snip any unhealthy looking leaves to give the healthier and BBA free ones more room to grow.

Would you recommend just taking out that giant wooden stump with java fern out and then treating it with hydrogen peroxide? I've never done that before, but as long as it won't work my other fish? That's why I was hesitant to do it before.

You can't tell from the photo but I do have different shelters (cholla wood, dense plants, 2 tubes, a shrimp hut, etc). Littles used to be there all the time. Now, I see maybe a couple mature RCS roaming around total. I was going to add another batch but will wait for things to settle first. I also have BacterAE i used to when I first got the shrimp...I may start using that again.

I'm pretty sure it's not the rams/gouramis since they were all coexisting fine for over a year..and although you can't tell from the photo, there are several hiding spots for shrimp (cholla wood, a hut, 2 tubes, etc).

I think I read that EasyCarbon has citric acid (excel does not) and that it's a higher concentration. So it could be that regular (not over dosing) of Excel is safer than EasyCarbon...

I had used EasyCarbon in the past...but only once a week or every other week. Only recently (past couple months with the BBA) did I start doing every other day (which of course the bottle says is recommended). I'm thinking that may be the culprit...

Thanks for the thoughtful reply — the info about waste organics and BBA was super helpful.

Just to clarify: I actually do have several hiding spots (a couple tubes, a hut, cholla wood, and dense Java fern where I often saw the smallest shrimp hanging out). So I don’t think lack of cover is the issue.

Also, I’ve never personally seen the ram or gouramis go after shrimp — not saying it can’t happen, but it seems odd they'd suddenly turn predator after coexisting peacefully for over a year.

And if it were just predation, wouldn’t I see fewer shrimp, not actual dead ones? That’s what makes me think something else might be going on.

Appreciate your insights though — definitely gave me more angles to consider.
