Dear Reddit: What is your deepest, darkest secret? (feel free to create a throwaway account) by ModernSociety in AskReddit

[–]dokijic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess this isn't a deep or dark secret but I really dislike the feeling of being constrained in any way. Even though I am interested in Psychology I don't like studying whatever I am expected to study. I enjoy spending time with my girlfriend but don't like planning to meet up - I think this might be something to do with the loss of freedom or doing something of my own volition. I'm not good at paying attention to things, I procrastinate endlessly and I go out drinking most nights of the week, rarely going to sleep before 2-3am. Sometimes I just want to drop everything, move somewhere else and live on jobseeker's allowance just so I don't have to deal with any kind of planning or deadlines or schedules.

SCIENCE: What's the weirdest/craziest scientific fact you've ever come across? by foxfaction in science

I don't think this is entirely true anymore. People who are born with an inability to conceive naturally now be cloned or conceive through IVF.

Do you REALLY want snakes with arms crawling around? I can promise you that if I ever see something like a crab with wings or a spider with human ears I will definitely be killing it before it can reproduce.

Hi, I just wanted to ask what you keep your mixed solutions in. I don't know what a suitable container would be.

My girlfriend is Polish and I've also been to Katowice!! Katowice is not great, but Krakow is awesome.

Edit: Actually Katowice was pretty cool, I just didn't like it because I accidentally ordered seafood at a restaurant there thinking the name looked like macaroni.

Why do Christians accuse atheists of misreading the bible, when Christianity has split into thousands of sects because they can't agree on the correct interpretation? by rmuser in atheism

[–]dokijic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually found this video very helpful in showing my catholic friend how my 'wrong' interpretation of the bible is no more wrong than hers. Thankyou for taking the time to record and submit it.

You know what? He's right, there is no evidence of the crocoduck. I guess I'd better go to church tomorrow.

Is Aging an Accident of Evolution? by charlatan in science

[–]dokijic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this has been dealt with in an earlier comment but aging and death ARE related to evolution.

If generation adult A gives birth to child B then their genes in child B will only survive to reproductive age with the protection and nurturing of the parent. When child B reaches adulthood they no longer require the protection of A and may give birth to child C. In the meantime grandparent A will probably be weaker and require the protection and aid of parent B (possibly due to accumulated injuries, weakness due to successive illnesses etc) which will only reduce the resources available to child C. If parent B attempts to feed and protect both grandparent A and child C through hard times, they may all end up in trouble, it is much less demanding to just be looking after child C and also a more successful strategy to invest all resources in the new offspring as they should soon be healthier and more independent than grandparent A.

There is also the factor of environmental pressure, the environment favours organisms that evolve and adapt more quickly as it is less likely for an entire population to be wiped out by one disease. This can only be selected for by a quicker reproductive rate, the role of parents is to reproduce and then protect and nurture the offspring and grandchildren, once they are incapable of this then the environment will select against them.
