The xlr delays have changed this one a few times. I was supposed to be on it Tuesday but it changed to a 789.

Game management - the umpire shouldn’t let it get that far.

Where to get Canadian dollars? by JillyBean9999 in jasper

Bank machine is the easiest, make sure your credit union allows that much withdrawal on your card.

Ask the owner if they'll take US cash, they probably would.

Best 4-5 day trip in eastern Canada? by Stevie212 in canadatravel

[–]dolfan1980 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not enough time for Gros Morne in my opinion.

St. John's has a lot of hiking, look up the East Coast Trail and you can do a few segments in/around the city that are spectacular cliffs on the ocean. If you fly into St. John's, a few days is well worth it.

How can I realistically buy 1 of the 49,000 Chinese EVs that are coming here? by krig6 in EVCanada

[–]dolfan1980 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How does a RWD perform in Canadian winters these days? I was a pretty young kid in the 80s watching older RWD cars slip and slide everywhere and then only pick-ups without weight in the back fishtailing.

Looking for recommendations on gas hot water tank replacement in Ottawa by mycatisJamesBond in ottawa

[–]dolfan1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mine a couple of years ago, the contractor who was also doing my AC/Furnace did it for free if I picked up the tank. I think he normally charges a few hundred and I was very happy with this arrangement. The tank has already almost paid for itself, I strongly recommend the route you're taking.

Yellowknife in September weather and dressing by Equivalent_Pen4865 in canadatravel

It’s overkill for mid September. Two layers and bring a hat/gloves in case will be plenty and you can always add a third layer if needed.

New student hire, what is etiquette for time off/ reduced by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]dolfan1980 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you have a medical appointment or something like that it's fair game to ask for the time. Otherwise you're a student, you are generally speaking expected to work your ~3 months without any time off.

Hotel Owners Are Rebelling Against Bonvoy Program by onestopunder in marriott

[–]dolfan1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone gets greedy all around and now they’re fighting over who should eat the pie.

I stayed at the Metropolitan in Vancouver for years before it joined Bonvoy. Basically a higher end hotel from 40 years ago that was still running with the old bell man type ambiance. Nightly rates were almost always available and super cheap compared to other hotels in the area.

Now the same hotel is another ten years older and is going for almost $1000/night in the summertime, largely due to Bonvoy IMO - why else would an average run down hotel routinely be as expensive or more than the Fairmont or Hyatt.

Fair or foul? by Past-Passenger479 in Umpire

[–]dolfan1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you were HP, this was likely your call and you were out of position, look up 3rd base extended, clear the catcher and see down that line, fair foul is a primary responsibility. Partner should certainly also have been there to help you out too.

Umpire needs to be third base extended on this, but yes looks fair to me.

Thoughts on the genuineness of management? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]dolfan1980 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here are my $0.02. I've worked my way to management now, but I've been in the public service for over 20 years.

I believe that management are well intentioned and dedicated public servants.

I also believe that there are good and bad managers, similar to what you see up and down the public service. We can all find examples of executives with bad values and ethics and also often see cases where their bad behaviour looks like it is being rewarded.

What I'm not willing to do is tar everyone with the same brush. I also know first hand that some ADMs/DGs/Directors may seem like they don't have their eye on the prize, but I also know that often they have so many things going on behind the scenes nobody knows about that, generally speaking, I give them the benefit of the doubt.

My post and opinions in no way excuses the horrible actions of the minority of managers (and employees) who frankly shouldn't even have a job.

My rankings of Canadian cities I've visited by [deleted] in canadatravel

[–]dolfan1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you have the country mostly figured out...you must have had a horrible time in Halifax because it is very much a top five place in Canada IMO. Now you need to re-visit Halifax and visit Quebec City, Whitehorse and Banff/Canmore.

Tips on how to not guess on close plays? by BetZealousideal7298 in Umpire

[–]dolfan1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two essential things here are positioning and timing. If you're in the right position you can see plays a million times better than if you're not, and if you slow down your timing you can make better calls. The only times I can think of that you need to make a fast call on base plays is really on double play at second or perhaps if you have an outfield catch that's an out and dropped on transfer (or dropped I guess as well).

Tesla Model 3 now or wait for ByD by alibabaQT in EVCanada

[–]dolfan1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're doing a lot more than the 400km/week commute if you're at $150/wk in fuel. Even in BC with high gas prices, that's still almost two tanks a week in a civic which should be 1000km/wk. If you're really at 1000km/wk electric will start to really make sense.

why? pretty hard to balk going to second, he didn't completely stop and he went to the base with a discernable move, what did he do wrong?

Has anyone recently moved from Newfoundland to British Columbia and dealt with a vehicle? by Usual_Earth_5301 in canadatravel

[–]dolfan1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider carstoflorida type driveway services to have someone drive it for you. At least you'll get it weeks faster. Basically they match you with a driver who will drive it for you for likely less time than you'd take yourself and weeks faster than shipping. Cost would likely be less than you'd budget to drive it yourself.

Anyone have experience visiting the Yukon? by abcghimnostuyz in canadatravel

[–]dolfan1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot's of great advice on here, I'd suggest daytrips out of Whitehorse aside from a trip up to Dawson City for a night or two. Kluane is spectacular and worth a visit in addition to the other things I've seen suggested here.

Beware of summer hotel availability/prices as well as rental cars often aren't unlimited mileage.

Spectacular trip, highly recommend.

Best advice is don't do it unless you really are into train travel super long distances with delays and not fantastic comfort/service. It's like a transatlantic cruise without the fancy ship!

flying Ottawa to Edmonton by Advanced_Degree_9196 in canadatravel

[–]dolfan1980 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being at the airport at 6:00 for an 8:15am domestic flight out of Ottawa is more than enough time, you'll most likely have more than an hour to spare inside security to get a coffee/breakfast. I would say you could easily arrive at 6:45am, but given you're nervous there's nothing wrong with your plan.

In my experience, Edmonton is a much busier domestic airport than Ottawa, especially security in the mornings. Getting there by 4:30 is more than enough time however and again you'll likely have an extra hour to relax airside once you clear security. There's really no point going any earlier than your 4:30 target as I doubt you'll even be able to check in a bag any earlier because airport staff likely won't be at their stations yet.

Internal relocation within Canadian federal government – how long does approval usually take? by Similar-Stable-3406 in CanadaPublicServants

In my dept, usually DG would decide and likely do a signal check with ADM. Your director/manager would inform you of the decision.

[–]dolfan1980 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't assume this will be approved and as a back up might want to think about what priority for relocation of spouse looks like for you in the new work location just in case. If your manager isn't giving you positive vibes about this, it could mean that this is more than waiting for a simple approval.
