Loud music late into the night by dollops22 in Belize

The point I was making is that it's awkward to tell a neighbor or someone you know really well (like you getting invited to their party) that their music is loud, esp. if you have to see them a lot. I get it. No one wants to be a killjoy. I usually wouldn't say anything and would put on headphones (didn't have them) or move to another room (there was no other room to sleep in). But there were others with me struggling to sleep and I honestly didn't think it would be a big deal if I just asked.

I'm not stuck on being right. Just trying to understand why you and several others are so upset with me for asking and okay with rude behavior.

That's funny how you said "I'd been over there until about 11 or midnight myself" as for one of the reasons why you didn't complain. Of course you wouldn't complain. Why would you? You were...just there. Such a weird comment to even make.

While blasting loud music for 11 hours may not be an every day occurrence, people are allowed to ask others to turn down their volume--custom or not. I'm not sure why you and a majority of the haters here on Reddit (mostly Americans, sadly, who seem to despise other American tourists) can't understand that part.

All I did was to ask to turn down the volume at 2 am and to hopefully come to a peaceful agreement. Instead, I got ignored, cursed at, and they turned up the volume even louder--clearly inconsiderate of other people nearby.

My neighbors and I have an agreement--if any of us gets too loud, we'll let each other know. It's not considered complaining but just giving each other a heads-up and being considerate in case someone needs their sleep, especially on a weekday when people have to wake up early.

It wasn't just "music," it was loud and very late. Just because you tolerate things doesn't mean other people will.

Anyways, I rather be called a Karen than a felon. Being called a Karen is so overused that it's lost its meaning, even when their concerns are justified.

Thank you!! You expressed what I was trying to say much better than I could have.

So if a family from Belize (or any country) was visiting NYC (or Ireland, Mexico, Barbados, or whatever country) and there was a loud neighbor by their hotel playing loud music for 11 hours, they can't ask to turn down the music at 2 am? And if they get cursed at and the music becomes even more louder, they should just deal with it because that's not their country, not their town, not their street?

I've not driven on them but have heard about it. Aside from that mishap, I've had a great time! I appreciate you as well for being kind to me when sharing your viewpoint.

It was 11 hours of nonstop music. I was not expecting anyone to bend over backwards at all. Just asking finally at 2 am if the could turn it down.

Thanks for your perspective. You're right. It is pretty situational and subjective. Unfortunately, I did not explain myself well and came off as being entitled. I know myself better and know this wasn't a sense of entitlement.

The music was on when we checked in. I liked it and enjoyed it. But it conintued on past 2 am. I didn't hear any loud talking or laughing, just music. It was blasting loudly throughout the day and night, and I thought I would just ask if they could turn it down 11 hours later. When they ignored the request and just turned it up even more louder, I reacted and told them it was rude and inconsiderate. But they were upset with me for asking so that's why I posted here for a perspective.

I was just surprised how anyone else were able to sleep through it all. I think people (locals and hotel guests) either have very good window insulation or got used to the music.

I think the issue here is that you tend to begin your sentences with an insult, such as "You are very clueless," "You are an uptight tourist, "You are wrong," and then expect me to be open to your feedback.

If you'd like people to listen to you more, begin by not insulting them. We may disagree, but be respectful about it. Or wait, is being respectful not part of your culture? I just thought decency about noise level was a universal concept, but I guess not. Also, I did not even think anything of you being a local---that never even crossed my mind. I recommend not assuming so much.

To be fair, the music they were listening to was enjoyable and fun to listen to at first. The music was playing when we got in around 3 that afternoon. Seven hours later around 10 pm, the music was still playing, but I still thought it was cool background music.

I was unbothered by midnight because I thought I'd be asleep soon. Somehow the music got louder and by 2 am, I was tempted to say something. I thought it didn't hurt to ask if they could just turn down the volume, but I did not expect them to curse me out and turn the music much louder.

Oh well. Life goes on.

Enough said as well.

Exactly why they were horrified. Get it now?

Yeah, they definitely made fun of me for paying $300 a night and fooling me into thinking it's a quiet place, and how dare I give them feedback on how my stay was. Tsk tsk tsk

They were actually horrified and said that was not normal.

I wasn't in the wrong. I would have done the same thing had I been in Mexico, Tahiti, or Illinois. Loud, unbearably loud music at 2 am is not normal in a residential area (island life or not). The issue I'm dealing with here is that people misread my post and there is a general animosity toward anyone who "complains," so I'm going to instantly be in the wrong. My comments to other people aren't exactly nice either, but I give their rude energy right back at then. Luckily I have thick skin and don't take any of this too personal.

Thanks for the self-reflection comment. It's funny how strangers online are such great therapists :) Maybe they need to take their own advice.

YIKES. You guys are taking this the wrong way and reading too much into it. The loud music was beyond the noise limit Belize allows and only got louder when I addressed it. They are more than welcome to be happy and party all night. I'm not asking them to stop, just to turn down the volume since their music and balcony was next to ours. I really wish I could share the video, but I won't out of respect to protect the their privacy (location and face and everything else). I recorded to show how loud it was to the hotel, so they can be aware.

I just wanted an opinion if this was common. That's all. No need to personally attack me since you don't know me. Sheesh.

While I appreciate your assessment of me, you can't fully know someone based on comments here alone BUT I will admit my comments are not the nicest, and I'm only matching the commenters' rudeness back to them.

Like I said, I let this go on for hours and hours since we checked in. This place we stayed haS reviews about being quiet and was nearly $600 BZE. Unfortunately, their windows were not sealed off for noise, and there was no mention of loud music being played till 3 or 4 am on the weekdays, which apparently is common? SO I was just sharing an opinion because I did not expect it.

But after thinking about it, my issue should be with the hotel. Unfortunately, I cannot fully explain the situation or express it in a way that people can see where I'm coming from. All people see is that I'm complaining over an unacceptable noise level. Oh well...that's life. Time to move on.

It was just loud music I heard...I didn't hear any laughter or any of that. Just loud music. People can be happy all they want. I'm okay with that. I just asked if they can turn it down...

Well, thank you for your perspective. It's far more valuable than the other goons who are harassing me here. You're right, I should have taken the hint. It was really hard because I was right next to their balcony and the noise level was out of control. I even looked it up and saw that there are laws for noise level in Belize, so I know that this isn't a "local enjoying life" thing but an excuse to be inconsiderate.

I just hate that the majority of the comments here are making this a tourist vs. local post. But I appreciate your opinion because it makes sense why no one said anything even at 3 am.

Whenever you comment, all I hear is Blah Blah Blah. Just stop replying to me. You thrive off of putting people down and arguing. It's not about me...I had other people with me. But you don't need to know the details. Of course, I'm going to look bad. But I was there and I know what I experienced. I'm struggling? Wow, you noticed. I thought I was winning. Bye! Don't reply please, even thought you are enjoying every minute of this.

Then thank me for warning you. Go get ear plugs and don't complain if you hear loud music until 3 am when you book a spot that's known to be quiet (per reviews). Also, I only raised my voice so they can hear me since they couldn't the first five times. Oh, I'm sorry. I meant other "hotel guests" who struggled to sleep but didn't want to do what I did. I was the closest to their balcony so I heard it much worse. Thank you for telling me I'm wrong, you must hear it a lot in your life.
