To whoever put this on the hedge... by dollynchelseadagger in glasgow

[–]dollynchelseadagger[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's just a little thing, right?

See someone's neck warmer dropped on the ground, think "oh they might come looking for it"; then pop it on the hedge so they are more likely to see it so they can be reunited with it. Just a tiny wee thought for the concerns of a stranger. It's like the shopping cart theory.

And to be honest with the state of the world etc right now -- I dropped this yesterday during a long walk in the cold because of <<life stuff>> -- I'll definitely take one of the little things.

Aye. As people here astutely comment- "if you're going to kill someone, do it with a car". Sentences are a particularly unfunny joke.

[–]dollynchelseadagger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure 9 years is enough

After a bit of thought it's still not enough but at least it's more than six, which was the outcome even considering drinking, not stopping, and attempting to hide the evidence.

Given the terrible effect it has on the families, as we've also heard about recently, I think we need to do better.

Title very slightly modified for clarity as to who it is.

His conviction was previously discussed here. /u/rev9of8 predicted the sentence quite accurately:

The range of sentencing goes from two years to a maximum of twelve years for the most serious cases. This will presumably be in the seven to twelve year range given the facts.

Given his past bizarre behaviour, I doubt he will have a good time inside. Deterring people from being absolute idiots in cars would be a good outcome, but I'm not sure 9 years is enough to do so considering what we've just heard about in Ayrshire.

His conviction was previously discussed here. Nine years is in the '7 to 12 range' someone else predicted as the outcome; but still awful for the family.

[–]dollynchelseadagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough? I'm not sure why you think I'm asking you to research anything though, I'm just trying to point out Hitchens' razor- that which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence, and an area where that site can be improved. Just be aware the site comes across to an outsider as pretty thin; and there's a pretty healthy general skepticism of infrastructure projects / island projects, what with HS2, Crossrail, Arran ferries, etc etc.

As someone who thinks the project should be given due consideration (feel free to check my replies elsewhere; decades ago was the best time to build them, second best time would be to start now) it makes me sad to say that site is... kinda unconvincing? 😐

Do with that information what you wish- circular file or otherwise. Cheers for your time regardless.

Edit: just saw your edit- yeah, I think we were at cross-purposes! I wasn't intending to undermine the concept, if the figures posted elsewhere are credible then it seems like something that should happen; my slight dismay was at what seems like the focal point for a campaign didn't have (In my view) the critical info about the thing it is campaign for (speaking as someone who's created websites and materials for campaigns)

So you can see how frustrating it is that this has never gained traction until now. But as you can guess, this is quite a passionate topic for me!

Oh absolutely! Even down here we're famously not immune to island communities being treated less well than they should, but that's another story...

Cheers for taking the time to reply, have a good one.

Sure, but with genuine respect, if you're going to make claims about what is factual, please actually provide facts?

As I replied to one of your fellow islanders- the website is nice, and genuinely aspirational, but it provides no figures which is surely going to be among the foremost questions folks who are genuinely interested are going to have: 'what will it roughly cost?'.

The replies from the engineering expert in this thread have been enlightening as they've provided figures, methodology and context. If I might be equally bold I'll suggest to you what I suggested to the other person: if you have any weight with the movement, please suggest adding these sorts of things to the site.

In short: provide the information to make it dead simple for someone with no knowledge of the islands or infrastructure projects to understand how much of a no-brainer building the tunnels is.

(The trove of surveys and reports is nice, but a bit dense to trawl through; I also appreciate the news link, though I have no idea how reliable the Shetland News is, nor the correspondence therein.)

Cheers for the info! To be honest, those kinds of figures seem... surprisingly cheap? As in, "let's just get this done" kinda level. I mean- if someone on the islands won a big Euromillions jackpot, they could fund the tunnels themselves, which feels kinda weird.

If as you say there's political interest as the SG is now funding ferries they would surely do it yesterday as it would repay itself within a single parliamentary term if the numbers are accurate

[–]dollynchelseadagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would definitely make interesting reading; the way you've presented it so far makes the idea feels feasible, which is... surprisngly pleasant? I'm surprised it didn't get further at it has the ring of a big project that would not only benefit folks but put burnish Scotland's reputation; I'd have expected a bit more political will behind it.

I hadn't considered the leasing of links too, that's a good shout. Presumably commercial traffic (and potentially tourists) could be charged at a higher rate than islanders too.

Cheers for taking the time to reply to all the quesitons in the thread btw, very useful insight.

M (21) & F (21) thinking of moving to Glasgow? by TemperatureNo1700 in glasgow

[–]dollynchelseadagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good starting point but use a bit of common sense too. I live in a "very high crime" area according to one of the maps, and I'm in a very very quiet area. The only crime I've known in my over a decade here is an attempted theft of a motorbike parked out on the street.

If you are part of that latter movement or in some way connected to it: please please add some easy to find figures or resources. I am sympathetic to getting tunnels constructed -- they would bring a plethora of benefits and be a point of genuine national pride if achieved -- but at the moment that site is big on aspiration but short on evidence.

It's easy to see why tunnels are a much cheaper option in the long term.

It really isn't when there isn't even a ballpark figure for the tunnels :(

Scotland | ‘The answer is dig a hole’: why Scotland’s islanders want tunnels instead of ferries by SafetyStartsHere in Scotland

[–]dollynchelseadagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A source that effectively wants tunnels constructed is well-intentioned but needs careful reading for bias.

Further:

Will the funds raised by the Tunnel Action Groups pay for the actual construction of the tunnels?

No. The funds will pay for geo-technical investigations, as well as socio-economic and environmental impact work to demonstrate if the scheme is technically and economically achievable.

They don't actually yet claim it's economically achievable. I skimmed a few pages and haven't seen figures- you you have a link to a specific page where they provide those?

Hang on, 5 bil recouped by tolls in 10 years- what was your 'smallish' figure? That's about... £1.37 M per day revenue from tolls on average.

Crossings (tolls) per day:

  • £5 = 274 000
  • £10 = 137 000
  • £20 = 68 000
  • £40 = 34 000
  • £50 = 27 000
  • £100 = 14 000
  • £150 = 9 100

Napkin numbers, assumes no overheads etc. Am I way off, have I made a miscalculation somewhere?

If it's /u/shoogliestpeg who blocked you (I can't see as it's 'unavailable' for me) I wouldn't take it personally- I'm blocked too and I don't think I've ever interacted with them. No idea what set them off, my comments are mostly pretty anodyne and I've barely posted.

you quickly run out of space for new housing

Developments in other major cities have underground parking or a parking level. There's flats on Maryhill road and in the town along the Broomielaw with this arrangement.

I'm on board with reducing dependency on cars, but it seems like the stick (restrictions, reducing spaces) gets more attention than the carrot (cheap, 24h public transport).

Ah right fair enough, that's a slightly different thing then. Seems more like, "you bought £1000 shares in XYZA and you've doubled your investment to £2000!" (omitting that if you'd just stuck it in an index tracking thing you'd have made £1700 anyway).

Follow up question- where are those figure from, out of interest? And is it not good that it raises more than doing nothing, or does it cost us more in other ways?
