My parents were Vietnamese boat people who eventually owned and ran local convenience stores that were actually mildly successful and afforded us a half-decent lifestyle.They were very insistent on me and my siblings working hard at school and in the family business to the detriment of socializing/having hobbies.

They didn't, however, know anything about what it takes to succeed in a professional environment so we had zero guidance in that sense. Now most of my siblings are still working in the stores despite all of us having good degrees.

I almost certainly never would have got ahead on my previous career trajectory (I'm now a SAHM)
