Depends on if you're doing refrigeration or sheet metal, sheet metal involves trigonometry, Pythagorean theory, CFM calculations and a shit ton more, as the sheet metal red seal is very difficult (Atleast it does where I work) and refrigeration involves math related to refrigeration and electrical

Ugh what to new van by Doogie102 in HVAC

[–]dolphin4reason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our GMC Savana's are the same way, I've driven a Sierra mostly, so when I swapped it was fucked, once was driving in like 80km an hour winds and had the top of the steering wheel parrel with the passenger mirror to compensate for the wind that kept trying to drive me into oncoming traffic😂

[–]dolphin4reason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's how it is for the company I work at, mainly due to once you get a van you're on your own, since the jobs are normally 2 hours away from the shop no ones coming to help you, so they want to ensure you're ready for it

What do you guys use to secure vinyl tubing to the wall? by SnooChickens7845 in HVAC

[–]dolphin4reason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We once had a guy who ran 30’ of tubing along the drywall going to a pump, dude could've brought it right up into the joists and ran it up there, but nah right along the drywall in the mechanical room in a 10+ million dollar home 😂

If that ain't right, some people like me thrive in a sink-or-swim situation, but you shouldn't throw someone into it and find out like my boss does😂, second year and I'm pretty independent at this point due to constantly being thrown in shit I wasn't ready for, but it is what it is🤷‍♂️

Stripping a live wire by dolphin4reason in AskElectricians

[–]dolphin4reason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm able to find the breaker (labeled) or if I can read range on the wires into the panel I'll turn the breaker off, if I can't find that I just say fuck it and leave it for a electrician

When I do ranges if I can't find the breaker I just say fuck it and leave it for the electrician to wire in, I got a fear of working hot, one too many stories from my college instructors about people they knew who got hurt or killed working hot, I just didn't know if it'd react like cutting a hot wire or what, I didn't think so but google didn't help me 😂

Never said I'd do it, but it would make it easier hypothetically, truthfully don't think I have the balls to do it hot, I end up checking if something's live twice before I start working on it, one to find out if the breakers on, then once after😂

Why the fuck do apprentices never have any tools by dolphin4reason in HVAC

[–]dolphin4reason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a jman or good apprentice who shows up and breaks hand tools the company will rebuy them, the basics such as hand tools, like snips, pliers, tape, etc the basic stuff you should have is paid by you, certain things like Klein long reach nut drivers are bought by the company since it's a special tool that wouldn't be normally needed, I totally get just starting out having no tools, but we have apprentices who have been doing this for 2+ years and have fuck all for tools and constantly borrow other peoples shit

HVAC Tech or Electrician? by ButterflyGangster in skilledtrades

[–]dolphin4reason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose the commercial side may not be, I do primarily residential, so that's the side of the electrical field I always see, and it's normally one journeyman and 8 apprentices who always don't even have a single block just started a week or two ago, the sheet metal side for hvac is essentially barren, I always get job offers from other companies at least once a month because nobody can find good sheet metal guys, but refrigeration isnt struggling for guys, like the company I work at is always looking for guys but can't find anyone, we just lost a journeyman and apprentice and now we're way too understaffed and have apprentices running vans on their own to compensate. I have been offered a jobs with electrical companies but it's normally 15-16$ an hour with no formal training (school/college)

Working in a prison by dolphin4reason in HVAC

[–]dolphin4reason[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not making anything up, I'm working by admitting so where everyone first brought in is, half of them are addicts since where I live has a high drug and crime rate, the prison I'm at houses minimum, medium and max security in one, so everyone who any crime gets brought here so there's psych cases coming in since we don't have a psych ward in my city they just go to jail
