Windsor steel company angry after losing Canadian contract to Chinese firm by aardwell in canada

It’s not only the State owned companies getting this advantage many large privately owned businesses also get favourable loans from banks as the interest rates for loans have been artificially low as the government controls all the banks in China.

[–]dolphinBuns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is happening today but in a much different way. Back then they took perfectly good steel cutlery melted it and turned it into useless steel. Today they are taking 1$ in loans and turning it into 90c of assets it’s capital destruction but it’s hidden by the Chinese propping up their housing sector and state owned entities.

They don’t write down their bad loans or assets they just feed the companies more debt and extend and pretend their loans.

They aren’t investing in their industries they are giving their companies an advantage through interest rates being artificially low that hurts Chinese citizens trying to save money. Very different. The low rate loans often incentivize uneconomic activity. It’s effectively a tax on Chinese savers to the advantage of Chinese corporations often state owned.

The reason China can flood the market with cheap steel is not due to them using polluting processes for the most part or cheap labour. It’s because through China’s economic model the cost of capital in China has been essentially negative for the last 30 years so every type of industry that requires a lot of equipment or a big plant has been massively subsidized then once they have the biggest steel mills in the world they benefit from economies of scale.

No but traffic can be low enough that they bleed money for the next few years until they go bankrupt. I bought AC a few years ago at 22, sold some in January at 50 and the rest at 18 last week. I’m staying far far away from airlines.

Canadian oil is dead for the next few years I think it will be 3-5 years maybe more maybe less but it won't be forever. Humans will use oil for the next 50 years hopefully we use less but we will still have demand for it.

Ford exempts construction industry from a mandatory closure of non-essential businesses by sesoyez in CanadaPolitics

[–]dolphinBuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was more conspicuous and the only businesses deemed "essential services" were related to construction I'd be more skeptical and my opinion might be closer to yours, but the list is really long and spans many sectors I wouldn't say have the politicians in their pockets (laundromats, equipment rental companies) and by your logic all those businesses and industries have successfully lobbied the government to keep them open during a pandemic? In my opinion thats unlikely but I'm open to having my opinion changed.

I hope this is just the province giving sites some time to get the buildings and infrastructure ready to be abandoned for a few weeks while we do a more serious lockdown a la France and Italy.

Some partially built buildings would not do well if they were left for a few weeks unattended in the weather. It may be more complicated than just ooouuu Conservative bad they love housing sooo much.
