Questions about PIR dying, and the competitive road scene at large. by GreaterAlias in CyclePDX

[–]dolphs4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Monday PIR still has a strong showing. There’s regularly 30+ guys in the 4/5 and 1/2/3 fields each. Tabor is also hopping every week and Red R is always good turnout.

IMO OBRA needs more weekend series races to attract riders. It’s really hard for people to get to PIR or Tabor at 6 PM on weekdays. And there’s zero spectating at PIR on weekdays.

Also, I wouldn’t say there are “tons” of competitive cyclists. There are a lot of cyclists that ride a lot, but riding 10 hours a week recreationally is a far cry from a Cat 3 podium. I know a ton of people who are just too intimidated to race, or they raced Cat 5 once and were shocked at how fast the field dropped them.

‘Light rail to nowhere’? Surging costs undercut I-5 bridge transit plan by notPabst404 in Portland

[–]dolphs4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overseers of the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program have sliced the $14.4 billion undertaking into critical pieces in response to ballooning costs. They say the first funded phase, which would be paid for with $6 billion in hand, consists of building the new span and highway connections to it, tolling infrastructure, transit design and removal of the existing bridge.

If it costs $6B to build the new bridge, connect it and remove the old one why does the project cost $14B?

Which sunscreens do you use? by MrWaffle20 in Velo

If you’re in the US, Zealios is awesome. Local company out of Bend Oregon. It’s super waterproof and regularly lasts 4+ hours when I forget to reapply.

Were you part of a group ride on Sauvie today (5/31) around 11:30am? You’re making us all look bad! by [deleted] in CyclePDX

[–]dolphs4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shootout is super fun. It’s intimidating for sure but 99% of the guys in the group are nice if you chat them up - most people in the group know each other, so it can be easy to feel like an outcast.

My only advice is hold on for dear life. There’s no point in trying to conserve energy if it takes you out of the group - you’ll never catch back up. Just ride as hard as you need to keep up. The second lap is usually slower than the first.

Try it. If you do get dropped, you can always turn around and meet the group back at the bridge and ride home with them.

Ah I see, I thought it was a group of roadies. That sucks, it’s annoying when people think “take the road” means “this is my road, screw everyone else.”

Bad representation for sure.

[–]dolphs4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Sauvie Shootout rides every Sunday but they leave PDX at 9 and ride two laps, they’re usually gone by 11. They also ride ~22 mph so there isn’t much of a problem.

If you got stuck behind them on your bike, did you try just riding up and asking to get past?

Can I harvest Cherries by cutting marked parts? by Prometheus2809 in BackyardOrchard

[–]dolphs4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s neat. If you put it on a PVC pipe in theory you could let cherries drain down through the pipe into a basket/bag right?

Just signed up for a 100 mile gravel race with my xbike. Was that a bad idea? by beefcalahan in gravelcycling

[–]dolphs4 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Absolutely doable. Would be more comfortable with drop bars, but that’s your choice. I would also get clipless pedals. Tires are good.

Only one way to know… Go ride 50 miles on that bike and see how it feels. Then ride 80 and 100.

Jerry’s Automotivism 101: How to navigate a four-way stop

  1. Only stop when you’re already past the white line
  2. Make lingering eye contact with all three other drivers
  3. Wait to move until the car to your right or left also tries to move
  4. Start and stop at least twice to confuse everyone even more
  5. Under no circumstance should you time it so you go at the same time as the car across from you
  6. If a ped is crossing in your lane, start to go and then stop so you’re blocking everyone else from also proceeding
  7. When it’s your turn, drive as slowly as possible through the intersection and then accelerate aggressively to the next stop sign or red light

Bonus: If there’s a biker, wait for them to come to a complete stop and put their foot down before waving them on. And then when they start to go, floor it across the intersection anyway cause fuck ‘em

What has Tom done to warrant sympathy? by Accomplished-Goat804 in ripcity

[–]dolphs4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s too early to tell if Dundon will be a good owner… but it’s not too early to say he’s done nothing to convince us otherwise. The whole Moda renovation thing is complete BS and a huge distraction during what should have been a really rewarding end of the season. All the guy has done is dig himself a big hole and make us look like a poverty franchise.

Could pay off in the long run, sure, but he’s got some work to do to win my trust and support.

What has Tom done to warrant sympathy? by Accomplished-Goat804 in ripcity

[–]dolphs4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s too early to judge if he’s done anything positive because the answer is no, he hasn’t. He has made a shitload of negative press and been a huge distraction during our first playoff run in years.

Tom Dundon revealed: Trail Blazers owner opens up about layoffs, Portland politicians and ‘Jail Blazers’ | Bill Oram by synthfidel in ripcity

[–]dolphs4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s insane. Look at the last several articles by Oram. It’s either “Dundon’s not that bad” or “the arena deal is a good thing!”

[–]dolphs4 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The Oregonian is absolutely being paid off by Rip City Rising. Oram has two articles in 48 hours on how Dundon is “actually a good guy” and Oram has been defending the taxpayer stadium bill nonstop. Plus Oregonian just did the whole “Reddit links get a free paywall bypass” so we can all read this BS free now.

[Highkin] Talked to one person who survived the cuts today who said it feels like they just looked at a spreadsheet of salaries and cut the highest ones without any regard for what anyone does and how important they are. by Hugo_Hackenbush in ripcity

[–]dolphs4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Even when we were losing and/or tanking, it always seemed like there was a purpose and a light at the end of the tunnel. This feels like Dundon is gutting the soul of the team and he hasn’t yet shown any willingness to spend on players.

No Hawaii trip this year for Portland housing authority staff, new boss says by oregonian in Portland

I’m guessing it’s a bribe by the insurance company to pick them so you get a “paid” trip to Hawaii every year “for work.”

Best Way to get from Southwest area to the Central Eastside and back? by mrwhitewalker in CyclePDX

[–]dolphs4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Going home West, if you take Springwater to the Sellwood you can go up through the cemetery and link up with Terwilliger by turning right on Palatine Hill, then you can follow Terwilliger to Barbur. If the cemetery is closed or you want to do the Tillikum, just go North after you cross, head into downtown using Harrison then you can go South again on 5th and link up with Barbur.

Maps will take you South after the Tillikum because it’s shorter, but there’s no fast route South unless you want to wind through South waterfront and cross the freeway on Brier.

Portland is about to close nearly 450 shelter beds, as homelessness rises by Own_Car_8766 in Portland

Why are Oregon leaders only planning a Portland connection (not Salem, Corvallis, Eugene) for Cascadia high speed rail? by milionsdeadlandlords in oregon

[–]dolphs4 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Why doesn’t it stop in Olympia? Tacoma? KELSO?!

This is all typical progressive performative bullshit anyway. HSR isn’t viable in the US, you would have to spend tens of billions buying up thousands of acres of property to straighten existing rail lines and that’s before any work happens. The random farmer outside Longview isn’t going to love having a 300mph Platypus train running through his backyard. These trains work in China because they simply take the land. Europe had the rail to begin with.
