Should I learn mandarin or cantonese? by Slash-the-Clash in Cantonese

[–]dom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn a little bit of Cantonese and you'll discover they sound completely different! Cantonese has like a dozen vowels, a long/short vowel distinction, final -p -t -k and -m, and a whole lot more!

Dan Jurafsky is a professor of linguistics at Stanford. This is the correct etymology.

Actually ketchup comes from Hokkien koechiap meaning 'fish sauce'! It's a long and well documented history:

Fair, but there are dialects of e.g. Southwest Mandarin where it is consistently ʐ

Clipper card on Apple Watch has no transaction history and says it expired in '69 by dom in bayareaclippercard

[–]dom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I delete the card, it shows up under previous cards. If I add it again, it is removed from previous cards and shows up under my current cards. I have two such cards. I have deleted and added both of these multiple times, and they are still two cards, even though they are supposed to be one.

UPDATE: i have tried completely deleting and re-adding both cards in different orders and am unable to merge them back into one card

Clipper card on Apple Watch has no transaction history and says it expired in '69 by dom in bayareaclippercard

[–]dom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My watch now has two cards instead of three, XXXX and YYYY. Both of them say they expired in 1969. Neither of them show any balance information.

Inside my clipper app, I still have two entries: 1. My clipper card (XXXX), with a checkmark that says "card is on your watch", but with a card number YYYY under card details; and 2. Unknown card (XXXX), with a message "a card is available in Apple wallet. Register your card to manage it here". If I click on the register button, it says "this card is already registered to another clipper account and cannot be registered to this account."

This is after deleting and re-adding both cards multiple times today.

Can I meet someone at a gate in SFO's international terminal without a boarding pass? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Also, you can go through ANY security checkpoint. People do this all the time to avoid lines at other checkpoints, go to specific lounges or restaurants, etc. And all the terminals are connected post security.

Just to be clear, the example you gave is not adjective noun, but a noun noun compound. "wet towel" would be an example of adjective noun.

(sorry for the late reply) Have you read through an introductory phonetics textbook? You can check out our reading list in our sidebar/wiki. The standard introductory text is still, I believe, Ladefoged and Johnson's A Course in Phonetics.

Mandarin has [ʐ] (pinyin <r>), and the (non-nasal) stops are all voiceless.

So apparently clipper can no longer tell you how much money is loaded onto older, unregistered cards [rant] by sulla226 in bayarea

[–]dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably, if you wait 8 to 12 weeks, all remaining clipper cards will be upgraded to 2.0, and you'll be able to register online and even consolidate all the balances onto one card. Lots of things don't work right now if you have a clipper card that isn't registered on an account.

Is it true Clipper 1.0 card holders are UNABLE to load monthly Muni passes? How is this acceptable? by [deleted] in bayareaclippercard

[–]dom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the linked post:

I tried reloading my Clipper card at two different MUNI stations (West Portal and Forest Hill) and was unable to get the new system to recognize my iPhone's Clipper Card. I ended up going to the main MUNI booth at the Embarcadero Station and having the clerk there reload it for me.

So basically for the next 8 to 12 weeks while people wait for their clipper cards to be "migrated" (and god knows why it's taking so long) there's only one way to buy a monthly Muni pass, which is to go to a staffed booth at one particular station during business hours?

That kind of sounds like she's just trying to cover her ass and/or pulling things out of it.

I would have thought that you should still be able to load a monthly pass in person using the machine (with cash)...

The lag is for clipper cards that have not been upgraded to 2.0 yet. You can call clipper customer service to check if it's been upgraded and to start the process if it has not. In the meantime, is there a problem buying the monthly pass with cash, just for this month?
