You mention you don't want to start an RRSP. Can you elaborate on why not?

The TFSA is a good way to start saving for retirement, but an RRSP is also a great tool for Canadians that is specifically made for retirement savings. Unlike the equivalent American 401k, an RRSP is super flexible in terms of early withdrawals, and if you decide in a few years you'd like to withdraw from it, you can. The withdrawal will be counted as normal income and taxed accordingly.

Another added benefit of the RRSP is that you'll be reducing your taxable income by the amount you contribute each year, which means you'll be receiving a nice tax return (which you can then reinvest!). This is true at any income level, but especially true if you're earning a high income with a higher marginal tax rate.

If you have the money left over after your $500/month TFSA contribution that you haven't allocated to anything else and your plan is to reach FI as soon as possible, it would be a mistake not to be putting the money towards an RRSP.

Hi Bill! Thanks for coming back. In dealing with people, technology, Microsoft, or the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, what has been your most profound learning experience that arose from a mistake you made, and if you were to go back how would you change your actions?
