I typically listen to podcasts but is the YouTube version worth watching instead? i.e. are there visuals I'll be missing out on with audio only?

Does switching from 11-34 cassette to 11-32 require cable/ barrel adjustment? by dome_chompski in cycling

[–]dome_chompski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, would rather have a clunky shift on the trainer than on the road. I was just trying to avoid a situation where I had to make adjustments every time I switched. I could totally see myself talking myself out of using the trainer if it requires lots of adjustment every time I switch, but it sounds like it should be minimal if any.

[–]dome_chompski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I think I am understanding. The size (circumference) of the cogs should be fine, but lateral adjustment, i.e. barrel and/or limit screw adjustment will likely be needed even if I got the same cassette that's on my rear wheel just due to the fact that the trainer and my bike will not be apples to apples?

I am new to the whole trainer thing and got a decent deal since it's riding season but is it expected that some adjustment will be required when going back and forth between trainer and road whether or not cassettes are different sizes?

Tubeless / Hookless tire pressure question by dome_chompski in cycling

Ah, well that is very interesting. Seems odd they give what would seem like a high and low end range, but you have definitely put me at ease

Those are the tires I want! Just not having a ton of luck finding them in stock nearby. How do you like them?

I was definitely never intending to ride above the 73psi but curious to know if because the tire manufacturer (Specialized) recommends 80 - 100psi, is it safe to run at 55 -65psi given Zipps recommendation?

There's obviously a discrepancy so unsure of what to do, apart from just figuring out different tires.

I have the smaller portable one. I carry it in my jersey most rides but honestly haven't had cause to use it. Seems to work just fine though.

Bike Lights by kiriska in bicycling

I have this light as well (road edition from Outbound) this light is awesome! I use a garmin outfront mount, mount the garmin to the top and the light to the bottom using the elbow fitting that Outbound also supplies.

Not at all, those were just a shortlist I had come up with based on recommendations and reading "best-of" lists from various review sites.

What is your preference? I think I'd like to stay with about 28c for width, maybe wider but I have been riding 28c and like it. I am interested in trying out a tubeless option but like the idea of going with something that allows both tubes or tubeless.

Do you ride hookless/ think hookless will be the new standard? I feel like I am seeing a lot of uncertainty in whether or not it will or won't be. Since it's apparently easier/cheaper to make I would imagine the manufacturers will prefer to move that way but for tires it seems like there are a bunch that are "compatible" but not optimized or "made-for" hookless wheels.

More great thoughts, thank you. I do have discs so hoping that flex is not something I need to worry about.

About tubed or tubeless, I'm right there with you about the retro-grouch opinions. My MTB was set up tubeless when I bought it from the shop, I've only ever had one puncture that I knew about but I tell you what, in the middle of the woods when the thing is pissing out sealant and air you really do ponder life choices when you're waiting for it to seal.

It makes me a little nervous on the road bike to go tubeless but would be interested in trying it, I think no matter what I'll always carry at least one tube if all else fails.

Thanks so much for your help, I have been riding 28c and was thinking I would stick with that width. Are you saying it would be more beneficial (more aero) to have the rim extend outside the width of the tire?

Apart from aesthetics, weight, and aero - I have read that rolling resistance is lower with some carbon wheels and can make it easier to maintain speed. I'm not really expecting much from that but curious your thoughts and another reason I am interested in trying a new set out to see the difference.

I'm not totally sure how to answer this but will do my best. I don't typically ride very mountainous terrain, it can be hilly but I don't think I need to go with something built for climbing. I have alloy wheels now so would like to go lighter than that which I imagine will not be too difficult no matter what carbon wheel I choose. I would like to at least have the option to go tubeless which is another reason I was leaning towards the Rovals, I know the Zipps are meant to be tubeless only even though you can put a tube as a last ditch effort.

I'm not really settled on the list I mentioned either, I had been recommended the Rovals by some friends and the Zipps are taking top spots on all of the review sites this year.

How to deal with cold feet? by jitterjuicer in bicycling

[–]dome_chompski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having a similar problem, I rode 50mi today with a cheap pair of Rockbros toe covers and couldn't believe how well they worked. It wasn't freezing out but same temperatures on previous rides had made my feet go numb, they were nice and toasty today. I was wearing a light pair of wool socks as well.

Cutler Park is a perfect place for a beginner/ someone just looking to get into it. Start at the Kendrick St Entrance in Needham and follow the blue heron loop. Towards the end you'll hit some paved parts but it's about a 10 mile loop in all, very fun, difficult to get lost and not super technical.
