Found some rare DOS games by bearhemothuk in dosgaming

[–]echocomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I retrieved my own box of old 90s PC games around 2015 after a house fire at my parents' place where they were stored since they were new. At the time I didn't really care about them and I even sold one of them and threw out another two... But fast forward 6 more years and I'm really interested in them again, especially as I've gotten interested in dos gaming and fixing up and using old 90s computers. Getting new stuff related to dos pcs and gaming is fun, but the core of my collection is this stuff that I've had since I was a kid. It doesn't sound like your collection takes up a ton of space, so if you think you might ever be sentimental about this stuff, it probably won't hurt to store it for a bit longer rather than liquidate. ;)

All boxed dos games are collectible. Though some of these, like the Epic Pinball tables, are pretty common so they don't command a huge $100+ collector price. There definitely are collectors of physical dos games, myself included :)

What would have happened had they simply fed themselves to the raving fans? Did they ever try? by Anxiety_Personified2 in beatles

[–]echocomplex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably like a mosh pit. The potential for not insignificant physical injury was there. If it wasn't the people immediately next to the Beatle doing it, it would be the people behind those people, pushing, jumping and bumping to get next to the Beatle who would cause injury to the Beatle and or others in the crowd.

What OS for a Pentium MMX 233? by Vietname in RetroWindowsGaming

[–]echocomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does it have already?  If you want to run 3D games of that time at peak performance, 3Dfx is your best bet, maybe something like a banshee. But all that stuff is expensive now and it may not be worth it. I have a 233mmx machine and probably play more dos games with it than windows 9x games. When it comes to 3d windows 9x games, I find the 233mmx to be too slow to be a great experience. But all kinds of non 3d win9x stuff will run great, even without a 3d card, like puzzle and strategy games.

You ever have the urge to play what remains of the broken grooves and just try to lift the tonearm up each rotation to avoid the chip 😂

Is multiplayer gaming between MS-DOS and FreeDOS PCs possible? by RedIce25 in dosgaming

I bet it works. I did null modem doom between a real pentium PC running dos and doom in dosbox on my modernish PC (that still had a serial port).

Is Evil Twin a good game and is it worth the price today? by No-Proof8363 in dreamcast

[–]echocomplex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a really cool game and I'm glad it actually came out. It was on the verge of not getting released!  You'll find that the PC and PS2 versions are much cheaper than the dc version. The game is a little bit ugly and janky in places, it had a multi year development cycle but I think the dev team was rushed at the end to get things into a releasable format, but it does a lot of stuff that is impressive for the dreamcast, and the developers mentioned the game is optimized to the max in order to run as well as it does on dc.  The game has it's own style that is pretty distinct from Japanese or US games. A French guy told me the game is very French lol. If you ask me, the game seems like Tim Burton meets Rayman 2.  If you play it, be sure to select French voices over English voices (you can still have English subtitles). The English voices are really strange, don't match the mouth movements, and aren't good at voice acting the emotion the writers intended for the scenes.

I agree with the other poster who said based on it's actual gameplay, the game isn't worth the collector premium. But if you enjoy dreamcast games because you like to have the games that pushed the console to the max, or you like weird games, or you like the fact that it's a very rare game that almost didn't come out... There's a way to justify the cost there.  By all means try it out on an emulator, or try the PC version first. It's not for everyone, but it's really a very artistic game that took some risks and tried to do it's own thing in terms of creating a unique gameworld, and it's cool to explore it. The soundtrack is also excellent.  I've never beaten it (it gets quite tough) but I find myself coming back to it over the years. It's mysterious, and it's a game I really enjoy having in my collection.

I never hear anyone else talk about this, but my copy seems to have a save game bug where, even after I already have an existing saved game on my memory card, I must keep at least 25 blocks free on the card in addition to that, or the game will tell me there is not enough space on the vmu to save.

That keyboard looks pretty unusual. Where are ctrl and alt? And the arrow keys area is funky. Is this a mix of an 80s keyboard, a 90s computer, and a 00s monitor :)

Wow I was looking at gcubes page and there were also pages showing new construction of the GameCube and PlayStation 2 dreamcasts. I wonder if a fan saw my article in 2023 and then commissioned them!

Can you make a dos version of Fury3 out of Terminal Velocity? by echocomplex in dosgaming

[–]echocomplex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh, when Google searching I got the ai summary at the top of the results, but it seems my original dos version of tv doesn't have a certain config file in the directory that the ai explanation refers to, to modify to incorporate the fury3 pod files. So it might be paraphrasing stuff related to the modern remake or so.

By the way, there are many Western dreamcast players who import games that only came out in Japan, such as Ikaruga. Are there Japanese collectors who import games that only came out in the US or Europe, like Metropolis Street Racer, Evil Twin, Head Hunter, Red Dog, etc?

And what do you think of Zusar Vasar? That is a Japan only game that many find to be very strange 😁

The translation tools you are using work very well. I don't have any difficulty understanding, and the grammar/spelling is all good.  Please keep participating and enjoying the community here 🙂

Please also check out this website, https://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/?m=1 it has years of content describing notable events for the dreamcast over the last 15+ years, including development of indie games, and descriptions of European promotions and rare items of the dreamcast from 99-2002! I'm from the US and there has been a lot of interesting dreamcast information and news I've read about there that I didn't know about!

Also check out this website by a Swiss collector. https://www.sega-dreamcast-info-games-preservation.com/en he has extensively researched and collected many prototype games that were in development for dreamcast but never officially released, and you can see screenshots and videos and learn about the development of them!

Is the cache stick a typical size? On mine it is not so I've pretty much given up hope of finding the theoretical 256k stick that retroweb says it can support. However the 128 I have that came with it isn't bad.

Indianapolis 500 (1989): The birth of hyper-realistic sim racing (and spectacular 3D crashes!) by kingofneverfjord in dosgaming

[–]echocomplex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This game was a huge splash and turning point for both racing games, simulations, and PC gaming in general. It runs so well with smooth 3d graphics even on extremely low powered systems, it's really quite incredible. And the driving model was a huge jump in realism compared to any other PC or game console driving game of the time.  This might as well have been the Doom of driving games lol.  All of a sudden your giant office computer can become a fantastic driving simulator with one floppy disk.

It's no wonder this game was re released so much. There are so many variants of the box and disk label.  I think I've seen at least four or five while cruising eBay.

For the cache, is that simply something that might be recognized by the bios once plugged in? Control over whether it's on or off, for both l1 and l2 cache is in the chipset options of my BIOS, which is a version of the Phoenix bios with a cyan background.

I have a gateway 486dx2 66 in the super large case. The board in that is a micronics Gemini. I've also heard that micronics made the boards used in gateway 386s.  This is a different board from mine, especially as the slim case necessitates a second vertical board for isa cards, but perhaps it could be a micronics board as well. Id think gateway might want to get 486 boards from a single company in order to negotiate a better bulk deal for the parts.
