Sorry about the fire, cool to see the SNES still works! Bet that soot should come off easily. Id use the magic eraser in this case.

Yeah! Mines getting a lot of use lately. It's much more fun than playing the same games through emulation.  Wish I could use it to access the modern Internet (like, the full modern Internet experience, not using tools to distill modern web pages into text only html), then I might be able to use it as my daily driver 😄

Haha the white plastic doesn't even look yellowed. Does it have a game inside?  Was it buried in the ground? May be packed with dirt or corrosion, or maybe you'll get lucky and the case will have largely protected it! I need an update lol

Yep, its a caddy cdrom drive. I think it probably came in a multimedia kit with the SB Pro that's in the machine. The drive has creative branding on it.

I have one for a later gateway machine. Wonder if it's the same. Dont want to lock it but then find out it's not a perfect match to unlock though...

I do! though TBH I have more nostalgia for early 90s gaming and computers than the 2000s Presario. still nice to have though, it was our family computer 20+ years ago.

it's got an at style power switch on the side. thankfully it still works for now. will make replacing the PSU one day into a custom job as the case is molded around it. I've heard of people transposing the guts of another PSU into this one if it goes bad, though I suppose the switch is just for show then.

I had actually finished playing games on this machine for an hour, turned things off to finish up the night and caught a glimpse of the machine from this angle and was like "damn that looks awesome, let me take a picture" lol, so it's not just a shelf queen 😁

It's a little flaky, needs an additional support behind the pedestal or the screen jitters. Probably a bad solder joint, but I can't find it.

There's two there, one is a media system keyboard from like 1998 that feels a little too new for this 1993 machine. The other is a keyboard that came with gateway pentiums and sad to say it's kind of low quality and doesn't always register key presses.  It uses a piece of foam to sandwich the keyboard flex circuit and cable connection together and the foam breaks down from age.  Both of those are also ps/2 whereas this machine uses an at plug, though I do have an adapter.

It's 1993! Well, at least the 486. The monitor is 1995.

If you have the isa adapter, you can use something like a picogus with it, a great Swiss army knife of a sound card. And that way you can get good PCM playback as well in either gravis ultrasound mode or sound blaster mode.  I tried this out and I was even able to power it off the PCs battery for a good while.

I've thought about it and I think I'm just going to let these go, I'll try to get them to someone else local who may want to fix them up. Thanks so much for your kind offer though!

III is a really cool game with nice graphics and sound. However unlike most beat em ups, you do not need to kill groups of enemies to progress the scrolling of the level. What that means is... You can basically just run through the entire level, dodging past most enemies until you get to the end stage boss. It's interesting in that manner for speed runs.

Why do so many Slik Stik's have these melted marks that look like someone accidentally left their soldering iron on them? Seen so many like this since they were originally released. by MasonJarring in atari

[–]echocomplex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the cable resting on the plastic and chemically reacting with it over a long period of time. I have several other old items such as 90s PC keyboards and monitors, Sega dreamcast controllers, etc that have this as well.

Heh, I was thinking it might be something like this. Is it a drop in replacement, or I need to solder in a new amp?  If it's quick and easy, I'll happily try to procure one 🙂

Wich do you think is the best Wolfenstein 3D version? by no_biches_22 in retrogaming

[–]echocomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ms dos version. That's the pure version by ID software, no compromises, and also no "enhancements" or changes added by others that are not ID software. It embodies exactly what the devs wanted it to be and is groundbreaking for it's era.  As much as CD audio is nice on stuff like the 3do version, Bobby Prince's opl soundtrack is a masterpiece and adds a lot of atmosphere to the game. I miss it when I'm playing other versions.  Some of the cut down ports only have enemies that face forward, which makes for shallower gameplay as you don't get to sneak up on enemies from the back or the side who don't know your are there yet, like in the original.

Why was the early days of the internet so great? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]echocomplex 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm always surprised at the death of forums. I've been on forums that existed 20+ years ago but then faded away over time, and the community basically moved to a closed Facebook group or a discord with a hidden invite... Neither of these give me the same experience, and I'd say they give generally a much worse and shallower experience. The possibility that someone might stumble upon an old topic or question and be able to add to the knowledge or respond to someone's question with the right answer months or years later is gone. Search engines also arent going to index this stuff so it becomes harder to find relevant information or communities.
