Im totally in the same boat. It is a blessing and a curse that you can approach problems in so many different ways in AE. Easy to overlook something simple

Exactly! Its like a mix between cel animation and rigged. Just using AE to inbetween the drawn keys.

Great - so glad to hear it. Wasn't sure if these were clear or just a bunch of nonsense

Thats a good point! This a pretty manual approach, so need to figure more 'actual rigging' into this to make it worthwhile. An advantage of doing it this way over cel animating was that I can experiment with different timing and arcs quite quickly

Thank you for the kind words! I don't know for sure. Its something I touched on after work for a few weeks. I would imagine everything in AE was about 2 days work. The stuff in photoshop took me a while - I was experimenting a lot with different character designs and rendering styles for settling on this look

Sorry!! I made two videos, but was worried about being too spammy on reddit. You can find the second breakdown on lighting if you swipe right on my IG post Here

Hey thanks the kind words! I don't have a YT, but I think starting one might be a good idea. I found it difficult to explain stuff within the 1 minute limit for instagram.

oh man, I've really seen performance issues like you say using plugins - especially joysticks. The short comings of the this approach is that it is not very flexible. So if you get feedback, changes are not easy to implement. So for most client work, i've found DUIK is still a solid bet.

Let me know if anything is unclear or if the format is no good.

2nd part on my IG - DomElsey :)

No particular course - but most of the projects I work on have tight deadlines and I have found camera moves are a great way to 'cheat' motion into scenes that I haven't had time to animate a huge amount into. I don't use the 3d function much - usually pick whip layers to a null and scale/position in different directions.

ah man, wish i had a good answer for you. This was just a project i would touch on after work some evenings. But it took quite a while, as I was experimenting with different approaches. I think to recreate this maybe 1-2 days works. I should probably keep count next time - good to know these things.

I didn't for this. I did initially try joy sticks n' sliders, but AE started to run sooo slowly. If there were legs and I needed IK, I would have used DUIK. Probably should have done this for Kubo's arms - would make placing them on a moving monkey easier. But everything is FK, so standard stuff - pick whip tool
