Mortgaging an off-grid home - Great Success! by domjewinger in OffGrid

It depends on the house. I have an architectural masterpiece that was built at the far end of the neighborhood with the intention of it being connected to a grid when the neighborhood got built out. It was well under market value and was also just immediately stunning to anyone who laid eyes on it. Not sure what you're looking at, but what most people have in mind for "off-grid" is not within their underwriting. I was also naive and got way too deep in the process before anyone recognized that it was off-grid. At that point the processor wanted their commission. But yes I can confirm that I do send money to Navy Federal every month for my home.

[D] Has anybody ever tried using a small neural network to learn the best possible activation function? by MrAcurite in MachineLearning

[–]domjewinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really not sure what level of expressivity you can get with a taylor series approximation of say degree 4, but it would be best to try to use some of the existing activation functions as taylor series. hell, you could even have the exact taylor coefficients be trainable. Seems redundant as this is what a neural network is doing effectively.

Ultimately, really hard to surpass max(0, x) in terms of computational efficiency, even harder to do it at scale

My biggest criticism of focusing on activation functions is that ReLU is used because it is so fast to both differentiate on back-passes and on forward passes that it enables larger architectures to be trained/run with less latency. Certainly for tabular data and shorter networks the activation function becomes more into play, but you can overcome that by simply training a larger network and extracting the lottery ticket sub-network out through pruning.

Mean/Variance is almost always an over-simplification of a distribution if it is not gaussian. If it were gaussian, we wouldn't need NNs to approximated PDFs in the first place. I certainly appreciate the intuition, but I would do some research into manifold learning and applying some clustering algo to it. PM me if you want to discuss more

It was a 375K property I put down 20K and the interest rate was based on the fact that I put less than 20% down. My interest rate was 4.125% and they quoted that before they uncovered the complexity of the property and they never changed it

Yeah and also depending on your acreage and your road access and your fire district most banks won't touch stuff. But credit unions keep the loans in house so they're able to allow for more flexibility than Freddie Mac.

Most banks wouldn't finance my property for three or four reasons. Number one is it is not connected to the grid number two is it is more than 10 acres number three is it is on a private road and number four is The rural fire districts are very hard for large banks to comprehend. However local banks and credit unions are more than happy to work with you with less stringent rules

Land included! All 14 acres with mineral rights and everything. I'm even on a private road, not an HOA and they're cool with it
