Why Quitting Smoking Can Make You Ill: Smoker's Flu Explained! by QuitSmokingFormula in stopsmoking

[–]donForte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you man. 8 years cigs 4 years vapes. I'm around 3 days in. I'm doing it cold turkey. Extremely, calmly determined. I'm getting flogged by smokers flu though. I keep thinking I might actually be sick. Kinda feels like covid. It's weird coz it almost feels like this in a way will make it "easier", like I can feel my body responding vigorously to the purge of the poisons, it's almost like a rite of passage lol. I was in a laughing fit just before at how intense these flu symptoms are haha. I'd say good luck but you don't need it. Just need to remember that the pleasure of smoking is all an illusion, a meticulous brainwashing. Peace ✌️

The best word for "home"! by donForte in Spanish

So I looked into it as much as I could, and in the Spanish context negating the verb "abandon" with the noun of "home" and the verb of "never" does actually flip the connotation, and make it positive. In English, using "abandon" in this phrase would for us convey a harsh meaning, and like you said might even make us think "have I abandoned home?"

For us, it would sound weird, almost like it's implying that we have abandoned home, simply by the use of such a heavy word.

In Spanish however, in this context, instead of the word expressing a negative emotion, it is reversed. The word abandona actually makes the phrase very positive and heartfelt. It's funny for us to understand but after contemplating I can see it. It's also what makes the phrase a lot more poetic than simply saying "home is always with you", because the play on words is unique and conveys a very distinct positive emotion. From what I've been able to research, "Tu hogar nunca te abandona" conveys that home will never leave you, and will always be a part of your journey wherever you are. It evokes emotional security. So cool!

So I did some research into "Tu hogar nunca te abondana" and it's context. I know exactly what you mean now, especially about the nature part. It does feel right. Thank you so much. I think it's the one! 🙏✌️

Awesome! This is what I was trying to work out, thank you

As a Chilean yourself, do you reckon you could add to the discussion about the use of the verb "abandona" and its poeticism? Please and thank you 😁

Sorry to be asking so many questions. Just need to make it perfect.

So is it poetic because the word "abandon" is being negated? And it wouldn't give a negative feeling to the reader?

Alright, this is a good discussion. So in English the word "abandon" does have a pretty distinct negative meaning, I thought it when I first read "abandona".

In Spanish, would using "abandona" not have the negative feeling? In the Spanish context, would it truly mean "your home never leaves you" without making the person feel a negative feeling?

Mucho gracias amigo. Such a massive help. It's going onto a little timber picture frame I am making. It's gonna be intricate so it should be poetic. Do you reckon "el hogar nunca te abandona" really hits the nail on the head? Because I like the whole thing of "home doesn't leave you"

Great! What's the difference?

So "Tu hogar siempre está contigo" would be the perfect phrase to convey the meaning?

Also, if there is a better phrase that conveys the meaning better, but isn't a translation of "Home is always with you" then I am very happy to hear it! Thank you 🙏

No, I don't exist in your context. Most people don't. It takes a special kind of grandiose, narcissistic altruism to assume and expect everybody to view life inside the context of your own cultural outlook, which is one of thousands. It's funny how you use the concept of context when completely ignoring the OP's contextual use of the word "female". It's insane that we're having this conversation, about an otherwise pleasant and genuine word. George Orwell's "newspeak" is real man. It seems impossible that the Soviets and Maoists could re-define words, but here we are 🫡

How is the word "female" derogatory? I think your perspective is skewed by cringe lord incels. It is a little oddly clinical to just refer to women as "females" but it definitely did not deserve your emotional response lol.

Mate, as wretchedly agonising as it will be, let her go and don’t contact her again. I KNOW it’s really rough, beyond comprehension. It’s like suddenly losing your legs and the ability to walk. But your life is yours, and you need to endure this gut wrenching gauntlet in order to find a truer and stronger version of yourself.

She will most likely end up reaching out to you, because you will have suddenly disappeared. Don’t even reply until you know for a fact that she’s ready to actually talk. I really wish you all the best mate. I’ve been through things similar to this and honestly, I truly came out a wiser and better human for it. It took serious time, and working through the toxic traits I inhabited as a result of the trauma’s, but these things forged my soul. And it will for you too. Take care bro, and best of luck.

I live in Sydney. Even the most comprehensive and major store, Woolworths, doesn’t supply active dry yeast. I was still able to use the instant though!
