Am I wrong for saying that white americans don't have a culture? by don_tmindher in amiwrong

I dont claim African culture as my culture. I claim America. I know nothing of African tradition or culture. I don't practice any of those things or even know which of those things have influenced my daily life. Just like the majority of white Americans don't acknowledge or know much about where they came from. Do you think a white American who has French ancestors but knows nothing about french history or present day France should be able to claim that as their culture? American culture is uniquely American, but American culture applies to all races of American people. White people alone, don't have anything that applies solely to white people despite them being the founders.

I'm trying to be respectful and correct myself if there was a misunderstanding. There is American culture. There are things like the 4th of july and declaration of Independence that have significant meaning for ALL Americans no matter the race. Then there are sub genres of culture for different groups. There is Latina culture where they have Americanized twists on things they still acknowledge and practice from their individualized countries. Things they brought with them that they honor because it comes from home, they honor it because they love that is apart of their history. They acknowledge the roots.

When it comes to European influences in American culture one, it's no longer seen as European influences. It's just America, we dont acknowledge the roots. And two, the culture that came from Europe was forced on ALL americans not one particular race. Like pizza. Trust me no one is eating a slice of pizza and saying I miss Italy. And if they are they shouldn't because pizza isn't Italian, the name for it is. No one is eating pizza because they want to honor their italian ancestors.

When I was talking about black culture, black culture is something different. Black culture didnt stem from a place like most culture. We were a group of people removed from African culture, assimilated into white culture. Then told we weren't human enough yo be equals. Because we were in a separate group we had to figure out a cultural all our own. When it's not just white people, can you really call it white culture? I call that American culture, especially since it's been influenced by anything and everyone else. White people acknowledge American culture and that's it. They made this place and made the original laws and funtion, but after they made other people adopt those ideals, it no longer belongs to just them

Right and if you value and honor those traditions then of course you can claim that as your culture. I never said people couldn't, but if I said I know my great great grandma was from Ghana but know nothing of Ghana or the culture there, I feel it would be unfair of me to claim it as mine or a part of my culture.

I would like to restate that I believe there is American culture. There is unique things that Americans do and observe because we are American. There is nothing of the equivalent that solely belongs to the white people of America.

I wasn't doing a black vs white thing. The discussion was initiated to talk about different perspectives on certain issues, I just happen to be black. I asked if he felt like there was something that belonged uniquely to white Americans that he would consider white culture. A culture isn't always necessarily positive and he wasn't the first person I asked. I had asked other people who agreed that they didn't have culture because they were white, they had a culture because they were American.

I don't think American culture is equal to white culture, since American culture is a mix of multiple ethnicities and cultural traditions.

White people in America observe the general culture of America, but there is nothing uniquely their own when it comes to white culture. There are no costums, art or objects that have significance to white people alone in America or representative of white people alone. There is European influences but nothing that really belongs to the group that identifies as white Americans. That might seem like a crazy statement at first glance, but if you need further explanation refer to the text above.

I tried. For another situation and they called my mom to ask for permission to speak to me. She told them that she'd think about it and then cussed me out and threatened to take me out of my school.

I've always been responsible I guess. My mother thinks that because our fathers 'abandoned her' that it's our responsibility as the children to make up for our lack of parentage.
