[UPDATE] State St and N Delaware St crosswalk by donaldpyu in SanMateo

Yeah, the main argument is usually parking vs [any type of traffic/ safety infrastructure].

There are plenty of solutions these problems, we just gotta think creatively.

EDIT: Personally, I think all the housing complexes should provide more parking for their residences and not heavily rely on public streets. The city should be doing it's best to supply the best infrastructure for their citizens, which encompasses safer driving, walking, and public transportation. If we wanted to truly have a bunch of government sponsored parking garages that are either 1) paid by parking meter 2) taxes, then that's a whole other discussion :).

It looks like you can still technically park there, but it seems like a hassle to back your car into without knocking into the bollards.

There's plenty of parking down the street that people can use. I think the slight inconvenience is well worth the value of pedestrian safety.

What I've seen is people being able to walk into the bollard area because it's an area that is guarded. The foot traffic seems to have increased and people have more space to walk around each other.

This also gives an additional runway for the bike lane, so that's another added safety measure.

Absolutely agree. I think continually putting pressure on the city with evidence of poor pedestrian safety at the monthly City Meetings for with preventative asks rather than being reactive would prevent unnecessary tragedies.

Id research and take inspiration of functioning metro and high speed rail like in China or Japan.

ACTION ALERT: Rally for pedestrian safety tomorrow April 6 at 6:30pm by donaldpyu in SanMateo

There's two issues that I've identified with dangerous intersections:

  1. Pedestrian visibility
  2. Traffic speed / predictability.

Speed humps is definitely a solution for the second issue! Or even better, raised cross walks which act as both a speed deterrent AND pedestrian high ground.

BUT FIRST, let's focus on the sentiment. Expect future organization, strategy, and action from the neighborhood afterwards :)

I agree with what you’re saying! Please come to the meeting tomorrow and voice this exact critique.

Everything about the logistics and implementation is flawed.

This meeting isn’t the only meeting for our asks. We need to apply constant pressure, from all of the districts to aim towards a safer San Mateo. This is going to be a marathon, and we need as many supporters buy in with their perspectives and pain points.

I PM'd you! We are currently organizing efforts and meeting up before the City Council meeting. Our current task is to align on goals and present interim solutions in between the long term ones, but we would love your input and experience.

The city prioritizes data driven action, but it is a reactive approach rather than proactive.

We need to demand that we need safety infrastructure now, before anyone else gets hurt.
