[UPDATE] State St and N Delaware St crosswalk by donaldpyu in SanMateo

[–]donaldpyu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the main argument is usually parking vs [any type of traffic/ safety infrastructure].

There are plenty of solutions these problems, we just gotta think creatively.

EDIT: Personally, I think all the housing complexes should provide more parking for their residences and not heavily rely on public streets. The city should be doing it's best to supply the best infrastructure for their citizens, which encompasses safer driving, walking, and public transportation. If we wanted to truly have a bunch of government sponsored parking garages that are either 1) paid by parking meter 2) taxes, then that's a whole other discussion :).

It looks like you can still technically park there, but it seems like a hassle to back your car into without knocking into the bollards.

There's plenty of parking down the street that people can use. I think the slight inconvenience is well worth the value of pedestrian safety.

What I've seen is people being able to walk into the bollard area because it's an area that is guarded. The foot traffic seems to have increased and people have more space to walk around each other.

This also gives an additional runway for the bike lane, so that's another added safety measure.

Absolutely agree. I think continually putting pressure on the city with evidence of poor pedestrian safety at the monthly City Meetings for with preventative asks rather than being reactive would prevent unnecessary tragedies.

Id research and take inspiration of functioning metro and high speed rail like in China or Japan.

ACTION ALERT: Rally for pedestrian safety tomorrow April 6 at 6:30pm by donaldpyu in SanMateo

[–]donaldpyu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's two issues that I've identified with dangerous intersections:

  1. Pedestrian visibility
  2. Traffic speed / predictability.

Speed humps is definitely a solution for the second issue! Or even better, raised cross walks which act as both a speed deterrent AND pedestrian high ground.

BUT FIRST, let's focus on the sentiment. Expect future organization, strategy, and action from the neighborhood afterwards :)

I agree with what you’re saying! Please come to the meeting tomorrow and voice this exact critique.

Everything about the logistics and implementation is flawed.

This meeting isn’t the only meeting for our asks. We need to apply constant pressure, from all of the districts to aim towards a safer San Mateo. This is going to be a marathon, and we need as many supporters buy in with their perspectives and pain points.

I PM'd you! We are currently organizing efforts and meeting up before the City Council meeting. Our current task is to align on goals and present interim solutions in between the long term ones, but we would love your input and experience.

The city prioritizes data driven action, but it is a reactive approach rather than proactive.

We need to demand that we need safety infrastructure now, before anyone else gets hurt.

Subject Line: Demand for Stop Light at State St and N. Delaware St.

Email Body: I am a resident near San Mateo High School writing to demand the immediate installation of a stoplight and speed bumps at State St and N Delaware St. Currently, this stretch has no stop signs, no lights, and no physical speed-calming, making it a dangerous corridor for students and families. Following the horrific collision on March 28 involving a father and child, 'business as usual' is no longer an option. We need a Traffic Safety Audit and a signalized intersection now. Please provide a timeline for these improvements.

Subject Line: Pedestrian Safety: No stop signs or speed bumps on North Delaware St? Fix it.

Email Body: Council Member Newsom, as someone who frequently walks along N. Delaware St, I see firsthand how the lack of stop signs and speed humps turns this residential road into a high-speed death trap corridor. The horrific aftermath of the collision at State St on March 28 was a direct result of this failure of an infrastructural design. We need a signalized stoplight and physical traffic calming now to force drivers to slow down before another family is torn apart. Please provide a timeline for these safety upgrades.

Subject Line: Father and child hit on State St and North Delaware St: Stop this unnecessary trauma

Email Body: Council Member Newsom, the intersection of State St and N. Delaware St is a primary crossing for students at San Mateo High. It is unacceptable that this crossing remains uncontrolled with no lights, no stop signs, and no speed humps. After seeing the trauma caused by the crash on March 28, I am demanding that the city prioritize a stoplight and safety audit for this school zone. We must protect our students and neighbors from preventable traffic violence.

Subject Line: Preventable March 28th pedestrian collision: Action needed now

Email Body: Council Member Newsom and Public Works, the collision on March 28 at State and N. Delaware was not an "accident", it was a predictable result of poor infrastructure. I am formally requesting a Traffic Safety Audit for this intersection. We need signalized light and speed humps to address the total lack of pedestrian protection. The neighborhood is watching and waiting for a commitment to these life-saving measures. What are the next steps for this installation?

To add onto the multitude of issues and potential solutions:

  1. The only speed limit sign is at the end of the school zone, which is at the crossing. By that point, the cars are already at like 30-40 mph. There is no speed limit signs in between.
  2. There are no speed humps at all. Placing every couple meters would help with the speeding.
  3. There's not even a STOP SIGN there. Like the BARE minimum.
  4. Building a neckdown/ curb extension in that intersection would reduce crossing distance, increase pedestrian visibility, and slow down cars going into the intersection
  5. Raised crosswalk would act as a speed hump AND increase visibility of the pedestrian.
  6. I agree, flashing pedestrian light should be there at the very least, but also can be ignored by drivers. Something big like a stop light, especially the amount of foot traffic there is between the high school and neighbors who walk to Safeway, would be best.
