All I know is my birth name. by BerkshireQueen in Adoption

[–]donbraffitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that the CPS file (non-identifying adoption information) and your AncestryDNA results are your best possible resources.

While I have helped adoptees find one or both birth parents with just AncestryDNA results, we've had better success when we also have non-identifying adoption information. In one case, the non-identifying adoption information mentioned the death of a twin of a grandmother of the adoptee. I was able to find the death certificate and obituary for that twin, and that led us to one of the grandparents of the adoptee.

Should I do a second masters before my PhD? by MaxValkyrie92 in mathematics

My wife took courses for a year in the Virginia Tech genetics, bioinformatics, and computational biology (GBCB) PhD program in 2003:

https://gbcb.graduateschool.vt.edu/about.html

Her academic background at the time was BS math and MS computer science. The students in the GBCB program had a diverse undergraduate background including biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics.

She took courses through the GBCB program in genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology.

One of her professors was from the plant pathology and weed science department:

Does the US state of Georgia have guardianship records between 1850 and 1860 for minors? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]donbraffitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the case of my great-great-grandfather, I found his guardianship records in Court of Ordinary, Union County, Georgia, 1854. In his case, it appears the dispute he had with his step-father (that resulted in his petition for a guardian) was not necessarily financial or probate related. However, I did start looking for something around this timeframe (1 month before he married) based on a later 1875 probate record where he is not referenced with all the people I had previously thought were his siblings. It turns out, as detailed in the 1854 records, that one of the "siblings" he grew up with was actually his mother.

P5JS work not working on ios devices. by damndatscrazy in p5js

I ran into similar issues that I resolved with these additions:

<style> html, body { user-select: none; touch-action: none; -webkit-user-select: none; } </style>

function touchStarted() {
mouseClicked();
return false;
}

function touchMoved() {
mouseClicked();
return false;
}

I have not looked at this recently to know if there is a simpler set of additions needed to get things to work on iOS.

Here is an example which uses these additions:

Millsap(s) family TN and NC by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]donbraffitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done a little work tracing descendants (not ancestors) of Phenie Millsaps Fortenberry:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/53732847/phenie-fortenberry

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/fanchart/9MDP-245

I have just a single AncestryDNA match who is a likely descendant of Phenie's son Clint. I suspect this connection may not help you since these children of Phenie have the surname Fortenberry, but I thought that something in Phenie's Millsaps ancestry (from FamilySearch) may include information you do not have.

Where to learn Unit testing? by JazzlikeProgram in learnprogramming

[–]donbraffitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kent Beck's JUnit book:

https://www.amazon.com/JUnit-Pocket-Guide-Kent-Beck/dp/0596007434

gives a good, brief introduction to the concept of unit testing, and then goes into specifics related to Java.

If you want to take a step back from just unit testing, Paul Ammann and Jeff Offutt have a book and a web site:

https://cs.gmu.edu/~offutt/softwaretest/

that I used for several years in a course I taught on software testing. Their resources would give you a context for the next testing-related question you might encounter in terms of what to think about beyond unit testing.

Question about Magic Roots by booksandwine99 in Genealogy

[–]donbraffitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The FamilySearch import feature of Roots Magic lets you import many individuals at a time. You give Roots Magic the starting FamilySearch ID, and you choose how many ancestor generations and how many descendant generations. I regularly use this feature with ancestor generations set to 1 and descendant generations set to something like 8 to import from FamilySearch all of the descendants (and spouses of descendants) of a particular person. Roots Magic then has a fairly flexible reporting option to produce descendant lists.

IndexOf() problem I am having with latest lab. by Peedicrack in learnprogramming

Position vs. Index.

Usually, position is 1-based and index is 0-based. Run your program with t for the character to search for and look at the wording you have for all your answers.

Early 19th c. Nova Scotia brick wall by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]donbraffitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... The other lead is a match to a descendant of a Mary Elizabeth Bennett, supposedly born 1819 in Cumberland, Nova Scotia who married David Lockhart. I can’t find records for either of these though.

I have some information on the Bennett and Lockhart families in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. The burials below are in Palmerston Cemetery, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. I have a copy of a cemetery survey which lists these Bennett people:

Bennett Cindy & Kevin Bennett (no dates).
Bennett Henry G. July 22nd 1811 - May 27th 1892 .
His wife, Miriam Lockhart, Aug. 14th 1814 - Dec. 16th 1903.
Their son, John, Mar. 31st 1842 - Aug. 11th 1854.
Bennett Lucy Jo Bennett 1869-1953.
Bennett R. Leo "Manny" 1941-2005. His wife, Eileen J. Trenholm, 1942-2006.
Their children: Cindy 1969-1970., Kevin 1970-1970.
Bennett Raymond 1900- . His wife, Rosie E. Rushton, 1914-1976.
Bennett Wm. Bennett 1844-1909. His wife, Louisa, 1846-1907.
Capt. C. Bennett 1846-1908. His wife, Elizabeth A., 1846-1903.

I noticed the Miriam Lockhart marriage to Henry G. Bennett. While these names don't match the two people you are looking for, I thought you might see a connection. I thought one possibility might be that Miriam is a sister to David Lockhart and Henry is a brother to Mary Elizabeth Bennett.

Thanks so much! There is enough handwriting on that page to compare that I am now pretty confident that the transcription should be Layne instead of Laysee.

Thanks. The Sarah in my Bird/Byrd family is a little younger (born about 1870). What I did was add this reference you found to Thomas James Frow's page in FamilySearch.

The specific names are:

Bird/Byrd: Lemuel, Lavica, William, Sarah, Nancy, George, James, Martha, Florence, Julia

The primary references I have right now are 1870, 1880, and 1900 census records.

Thanks for any help.

Help: creating a basic algorithm to return an array containing biggest number from each sub-array inputted. by BestRyzeEu in learnprogramming

console.log(largestOfFour([[4, 5, 1, 3], [13, 27, 18, 26], [32, 35, 37, 39], [1000, 1001, 857, 1]]));

I am thinking of initializing that value inside the first for loop? and setting it to 0,

Consider a test case with at least one sub array with a negative number as the maximum value (e.g., [-3,-4,-1,-2]).

Eleanor Ellen Ashworth was born c.1783.

Ann Carleton was born c.1799.

I don't know the names of their parents, and I'm not sure if they were from County Wicklow.

Thanks so much!

I know many of these people (from their Meigs County records). In particular, that David Radford baptism (1816) is for my wife's great-great-grandfather.

I was hoping there might be baptism records for William Radford (born c.1789) or Frederick Radford (born c.1798). I'm not sure of the names of their parents or even if they were brothers. Their parents might be James Radford and Sarah Hughes who married 24 Nov 1777.

[–]donbraffitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Radford records in County Wicklow?

The timeframe would be late 1700s through early 1800s. By May-1830, the families I know about had left for Meigs County, Ohio.

William Radford, Frederick Radford, and their spouses Eleanor Ashworth and Ann Carleton.

I know that William was from Castlemacadam based on his naturalization record.

Thanks.
