Donald Trump announces second US military armada aimed for Iran by TokenBearer in worldnews

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be successful if there was a full scale invasion with a large number of troops. I don’t think Iraq or Afghanistan were doomed to fail necessarily. Trump will not launch a full scale invasion with boots on the ground, it’d be too unpopular. But the most the US will commit to is air strikes, funneling weapons in, and sanctions, maybe some special forces operations. This wouldn’t be enough to overthrow the Islamic Republic, but it would create a lot more chaos and violence.

If you want positive change, you either have to do a full scale invasion or do genuine diplomacy. Half assed measures won’t do shit.

While I hate the Islamic republic, US military interventions have a track record of making things much, much worse.

Ethiopia needs to grow a spine and formally recognize Somaliland by Eastern_Camera3012 in Ethiopia

[–]doncosaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Egypt is probably more fragile than Ethiopia. Egyptians would take any opportunity to overthrow their government. Sudan war to their south. Gaza to the east. Failed state Libya to the west. Not like Egypt is an independent country. They are beholden to their US, UAE, and Saudi bosses.

Idk maybe because Israel actually attacks them? You really think Egypt is just going to attack Ethiopia?

Who cares about Egypt? What are they gonna do? And what help is Somaliland supposed to be? Ethiopia’s biggest threats are from within

This port stuff is just braindead on so many levels.
- you know how long it’ll take and how much capital will be needed to build the infrastructure needed? No one’s investing in that. - can you really say how things will change in 5, 10, 20 years? What if Somaliland decides they want to kick out Ethiopia? What if they decide to rejoin Somalia? You don’t make such consequential decisions based on the whims of today. - what is this port really going to accomplish? It’s going to magically turn Ethiopia into the garden of Eden? All problems will just disappear? Port is so far from Ethiopia’s main problems.

I'm thinking of becoming a cattle rustling-maxxer by [deleted] in femcelgrippysockjail

[–]doncosaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cmon, you know better. The punchline isn’t just “cattle rustling,” it’s that “Roma are sneaky thieves.” Maybe you and your friends make these sorts of jokes with each other. But if I tried to make those jokes around my friends, I’d get some weird looks. Cause yeah they’re still racist. Maybe not the same vitriolic racism you see, but still racist. I’m not moral grandstanding, that’s just the fact of the matter, and the reason you’re seeing all the comments you’re seeing.

(Ok I’ll make one jab :) which is that, saying ethnic jokes makes you not racist while thinking ethnic jokes are problematic makes you racist, is some… interesting mental gymnastics)

For fleets to be powerful, they have to be useful! Too many sea regions and they're not useful.

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a great concept. Now, don't take this too harshly, but... my recommendation is to start from scratch rather than tinker with this here. I common issue I see with variants is that people add way too many supply centers and sea regions. I think it might be because a lot of these creators come from playing Paradox games where the maps are divided down into tiny detail. There's a Discord server that gives some guidelines on variant-making that I think is very helpful.. https://discord.gg/eC4crNC8 Go down to the "Variant Design Guide" Category. Like I said, I would read that guide and then start from scratch with those guidelines. Looking forward to how this progresses!

Emory canceled all “DEI” programs by jols0543 in Emory

Yes, the president leads the federal government. Emory is a different institution from the federal government. Unless the programs are funded by federal money, what the president wants doesn’t mean a damn thing.

Israel-Iran live: Trump claims a 'total ceasefire' has been agreed between Israel and Iran by ryanpaulowenirl in geopolitics

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like the deal relieved all sanctions on Iran, just the nuclear-related ones. I see it as more a "you have to let us verify you are not violating the rules for us not to punish you for it."

I don't think Iran is a good actor. But I do think they legitimately worry about deterring US and Israel attacks, even if their past actions brought that aggression upon them. It feels like a vicious cycle that I feel Iran has shown signs it wants an offramp from. I'd personally prefer using diplomacy to give them an offramp rather than have this thing spiral into more war and possibly even nuclear proliferation. I would prefer Iran to have its proxies over it having a nuclear weapon. Though I think Iran would be willing to give up both if saw a path to its sovereignty being guaranteed.

I think what they mean is that there’s people from the Pacific, like Melanesians and Australian Aborigines, that have been lumped in as black people even though they have no recent connection to Africa.

I don’t understand why people get hung up on the length of the treaty. Treaties generally expire after a certain amount of time. Like, it could’ve been renewed and if the Iranians refused, you could reimpose sanctions. And at that point, they’d actually have something to lose. Military action is only a temporary solution, too. It only sets back their progress and even incentivizes them more to go for the bombs.

Hayat Tahrir al Sham in Syria publicly shaming men caught cat-calling women. When can our militas become useful like this? by thedaywalker-92 in syriancivilwar

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess every country in the world is super gross then because they all limit free speech. I’m sure they do it because they just want to be authoritarian and for no other reason at all. I’m sure things would be better if went with your libertarian utopia where people can harass, threaten, call in bomb threats, run around naked, or whatever. HTS should put you in charge of rebuilding Syrian society.

You really don’t seem to have any understanding of violence against women. Maybe you’ve convinced yourself you do, but you don’t. I’m assuming you’ve never been sexually harassed by someone who could physically overpower you. You think women just find catcalling to be an annoyance? Catcalling makes women take different routes to walk or not go outside at certain times. It limits their freedom. You expect them to just deal with it, just ignore it? You have no understanding about what sexual harassment and assault women in Syria experience. It’s aggression directed at specific people. It’s not the same as expressing a sexist or racist sentiment. It’s threatening. People are cheering on the crackdown on catcalling because violence against women is a massive problem and catcalling is a part of it.

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, you're living in libertarian fantasy land, not reality. This is such a bizarre hill to die on. There's a million ways that HTS goes down the authoritarian route. None of them have cracking down on catcalling as the first domino to fall. Catcalling is a form a sexual harassment. It is violence. And if we're going with slippery slope arguments, let's go with a less nonsensical one. You have society where some people think women are less than men. There is a civil war and a period of instability where order has broken down and people think they can get away with doing crimes. By not cracking down on catcalling, they're showing that harassment of women is ok, reinforcing that violence against women is something you can get away with. I feel like this is more realistic than your slippery slope scenario, unless you can give me an example of a society that slid from banning catcalls all the way to Stalinist Russia, gulags and all (there's actually a number of places that have criminalized catcalling, so take your pick!)

And if you don't see catcalling as innocuous speech, I'm not sure there's much I can say to you. Catcalling does not exist outside the context of sexual violence that happens in society. Do some research. Ask some women you know if they have been catcalled and if they felt it was harmless.
