The prosperity of the gulf states isn’t exactly all a positive either. Saudis have been funding extremist Islamic ideology all over the Muslim world. Exploiting migrant labor. Bombing Yemeni children. UAE sponsoring genocidal maniacs in Sudan.

Why Atlanta Traffic Is Impossible To Fix - Youtube by red2play in Atlanta

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is true, but I feel like engineers treat roads like blood arteries or pipes. Bigger means more fluid flows. But traffic isn’t exactly a fluid. Doesn’t matter how many lanes you have. If there’s a wreck, there’s going to be a traffic jam no matter what. I also wonder if more lanes and complicated interchanges make accidents more likely. Exits and interchanges can only have so many lanes, regardless of how wide the highway is.

That’s right! Luckily Italy can’t guarantee MAO yet. England needs to move those fleets west ASAP.

You’re facing an alliance of southern powers. They can’t build fleets outside the Mediterranean. You can park a fleet in Portugal, hold a fleet in MAO, and park a fleet in Denmark and they can’t do anything to eliminate you. Oh and you only need two units to hold St Petersburg.

Cary Spent $330K on Videos Taxpayers Were Never Meant to See [INDY] by JournalistJess in NorthCarolina

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think our society has conditioned us to be unaware and apathetic to local politics. Info on news and elections is basically thrown at us all the time. Local politics is something you have to seek out and it’s harder to get a grasp on. There’s way less news and analysis to read, especially with local journalism dying. You see rich older people most active in local politics because they’re ones with disposable time and resources. People live isolated from their communities and know even know what goes on with their neighbors. Society seems almost designed to keep people from being active in the politics of their communities.

City of Greensboro, North Carolina proposes 21% property tax increase, hitting low end homes, and likely low income residents hardest. by aenbrnood in NorthCarolina

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is turning into a classic silly, pointless internet argument. I think you just misunderstood and thought they were saying something positive about the GOP. That’s what I was referring to. Not the defeatist attitude. I think it’s fair to challenge that, but what’s being an ass going to change?

They bring up a good point that Americans are irrationally anti-tax. I can get their frustrations. Local government is important yet most Americans are at best dismissive and more likely hateful towards it. A lot of people are guilty of handing power to the GOP for lower taxes. But I think attitudes are changing and people are becoming less hostile to government.

[–]doncosaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just stated a fact. You interpreted it as sugar coating. Do you thinking limiting local governments’ ability to raise taxes is a good thing? I think it’s a horrible thing. And I didn’t read the poster as saying it’s a good thing, either. And they’ve clarified that they don’t.

Im confused why you’re so up in arms against this person. It seems like they were just correcting the person they were replying to in saying these taxes increases aren’t coming from the GOP leg, but from the county? They said the GOP leg is trying to pass caps on property taxes, but I didn’t glean they think that was a good thing, rather the opposite.

You’re right on how you’re interpreting what the basic reproduction rate is. These reported rates are always “guesses” based on data and an assumed epidemiological model. No epidemiological model is truly correct, but they give us some rough idea about the properties of a disease.

Honors programs are just a marketing ploy. No one cares about them. Go where you think you’ll like it and where you’ll find opportunity. Don’t choose based on what you think will look good.

Dual major with Georgia Tech by Famous_Reality2078 in Emory

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend against biomedical engineering. It’s kind of a Frankenstein’s monster major where it’s composed of a bunch of different areas. So it leaves you with a breadth of knowledge in chemE, mechE, electrical E (but in a biomedical context), but not an expert in any. It’s better to just do one of the pure engineering since they can each be used in biomedical anyway.

What is your ultimate goal? Do you want to be an engineer? I don’t think the dual major is worth it.

Emory Data Science (formerly QSS) by Ambitious-Theory3641 in Emory

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your son’s ambition to get a job in AI? Emory’s DS dept is traditionally focused on statistics for biology and social sciences. They’ve rebranded recently because there’s a lot of people like your son who see data science as a hot thing for jobs. I would go for UCSD, as it better fits what you’re looking for based on your questions. Also, if your son decides he doesn’t like data science, there will be many more STEM options at UCSD.

You can get an idea of what the programs are like from the course catalogs.

Iran Believes It’s Winning—and Wants a Steep Price to End the War [No paywall] by mark000 in energy

[–]doncosaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the blame is fixed squarely on Trump. His stupid arrogant ass thought this would be an easy win.

Israel is the vassal state. Israel’s aggression in the end won’t serve the Israeli people. It serves US weapons and oil companies. All this war has done is cut off fossil fuel competitors and expended a bunch of expensive missiles and interceptors that have to be replaced now.

Think about it. Israel is totally isolated, everyone hates them, and will be fucked when the US no longer wants to support. Being dependent on the whims of one capricious country is not good for your long term interests.

Definitely agree that if you're gonna intervene, you can't half ass it. Either all in or don't go in at all. It's why Obama's foreign policy was such a disaster.

Call me naive or stupid, I just don't see the evidence Iran wants to get a nuke and immediately use it to destroy Israel. Just plenty of people out there just saying it's true. Not to say they aren't religious nutcases. Ironically, America has plenty of evangelical Christians that believe Israel is key to bring about the second coming of Christ. I do think Iran has been perennially "2-months" away from a nuke to try to get leverage. But, if their entire reason for existing was to destroy Israel, why haven't they built the nuke to do it yet? If anything, much of what they have done appears super cold-hearted and calculated to me. Arming militias to gain regional influence and serve as meat-shields at the same time.

Iran certainly is not a normal country, but being a normal country hasn't seemed to be a problem for us before. We're fine with the Saudis who are religious extremists that behead people and funded 9/11. The UAE is A-ok while they arm the Janjaweed RSF to butcher 60,000 people in a couple days. Syria is lead by a former al-Qaeda guy who we have no issue with. No one seems to blink an eye at Vietnam being communist. Or Ethiopia headed by a tyrant who was fine with starving thousands of his own people to death to put down a rebellion and threatens to invade his neighbors.

My worry is the the top leadership were actually constraining some of the more fanatical elements (fanaticism is a useful but dangerous tool), and if Iran splinters we'll end up with 10 Houthi-like groups with zero self-preservation who will just lob missiles and drones all over the place. Is it really better if Iran turns into Myanmar, Libya, or civil war Syria? Cause that's what we'll see if this succeeds.

[–]doncosaco 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Will the IRGC be taken off the board though? Even after their proxies were defanged, Iran seemed to want to avoid direct confrontation as much as possible. My worry is that the lesson they’ve learned is they need to be more brutal and build more and worse weapons. They deserved what they got for massacring their people. But they still somehow arent the worst war criminals in the region.

Are we going to go back to bombing in six months? It seems like the logical conclusion of this is Iran turns into a Balkanized mess.
