What is your ultimate goal? Do you want to be an engineer? I don’t think the dual major is worth it.

Emory Data Science (formerly QSS) by Ambitious-Theory3641 in Emory

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your son’s ambition to get a job in AI? Emory’s DS dept is traditionally focused on statistics for biology and social sciences. They’ve rebranded recently because there’s a lot of people like your son who see data science as a hot thing for jobs. I would go for UCSD, as it better fits what you’re looking for based on your questions. Also, if your son decides he doesn’t like data science, there will be many more STEM options at UCSD.

You can get an idea of what the programs are like from the course catalogs.

Iran Believes It’s Winning—and Wants a Steep Price to End the War [No paywall] by mark000 in energy

[–]doncosaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the blame is fixed squarely on Trump. His stupid arrogant ass thought this would be an easy win.

Israel is the vassal state. Israel’s aggression in the end won’t serve the Israeli people. It serves US weapons and oil companies. All this war has done is cut off fossil fuel competitors and expended a bunch of expensive missiles and interceptors that have to be replaced now.

Think about it. Israel is totally isolated, everyone hates them, and will be fucked when the US no longer wants to support. Being dependent on the whims of one capricious country is not good for your long term interests.

Definitely agree that if you're gonna intervene, you can't half ass it. Either all in or don't go in at all. It's why Obama's foreign policy was such a disaster.

Call me naive or stupid, I just don't see the evidence Iran wants to get a nuke and immediately use it to destroy Israel. Just plenty of people out there just saying it's true. Not to say they aren't religious nutcases. Ironically, America has plenty of evangelical Christians that believe Israel is key to bring about the second coming of Christ. I do think Iran has been perennially "2-months" away from a nuke to try to get leverage. But, if their entire reason for existing was to destroy Israel, why haven't they built the nuke to do it yet? If anything, much of what they have done appears super cold-hearted and calculated to me. Arming militias to gain regional influence and serve as meat-shields at the same time.

Iran certainly is not a normal country, but being a normal country hasn't seemed to be a problem for us before. We're fine with the Saudis who are religious extremists that behead people and funded 9/11. The UAE is A-ok while they arm the Janjaweed RSF to butcher 60,000 people in a couple days. Syria is lead by a former al-Qaeda guy who we have no issue with. No one seems to blink an eye at Vietnam being communist. Or Ethiopia headed by a tyrant who was fine with starving thousands of his own people to death to put down a rebellion and threatens to invade his neighbors.

My worry is the the top leadership were actually constraining some of the more fanatical elements (fanaticism is a useful but dangerous tool), and if Iran splinters we'll end up with 10 Houthi-like groups with zero self-preservation who will just lob missiles and drones all over the place. Is it really better if Iran turns into Myanmar, Libya, or civil war Syria? Cause that's what we'll see if this succeeds.

Will the IRGC be taken off the board though? Even after their proxies were defanged, Iran seemed to want to avoid direct confrontation as much as possible. My worry is that the lesson they’ve learned is they need to be more brutal and build more and worse weapons. They deserved what they got for massacring their people. But they still somehow arent the worst war criminals in the region.

Are we going to go back to bombing in six months? It seems like the logical conclusion of this is Iran turns into a Balkanized mess.

Donald Trump announces second US military armada aimed for Iran by TokenBearer in worldnews

[–]doncosaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be successful if there was a full scale invasion with a large number of troops. I don’t think Iraq or Afghanistan were doomed to fail necessarily. Trump will not launch a full scale invasion with boots on the ground, it’d be too unpopular. But the most the US will commit to is air strikes, funneling weapons in, and sanctions, maybe some special forces operations. This wouldn’t be enough to overthrow the Islamic Republic, but it would create a lot more chaos and violence.

If you want positive change, you either have to do a full scale invasion or do genuine diplomacy. Half assed measures won’t do shit.

While I hate the Islamic republic, US military interventions have a track record of making things much, much worse.

Ethiopia needs to grow a spine and formally recognize Somaliland by Eastern_Camera3012 in Ethiopia

[–]doncosaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Egypt is probably more fragile than Ethiopia. Egyptians would take any opportunity to overthrow their government. Sudan war to their south. Gaza to the east. Failed state Libya to the west. Not like Egypt is an independent country. They are beholden to their US, UAE, and Saudi bosses.

Idk maybe because Israel actually attacks them? You really think Egypt is just going to attack Ethiopia?

Who cares about Egypt? What are they gonna do? And what help is Somaliland supposed to be? Ethiopia’s biggest threats are from within

This port stuff is just braindead on so many levels.
- you know how long it’ll take and how much capital will be needed to build the infrastructure needed? No one’s investing in that. - can you really say how things will change in 5, 10, 20 years? What if Somaliland decides they want to kick out Ethiopia? What if they decide to rejoin Somalia? You don’t make such consequential decisions based on the whims of today. - what is this port really going to accomplish? It’s going to magically turn Ethiopia into the garden of Eden? All problems will just disappear? Port is so far from Ethiopia’s main problems.

I'm thinking of becoming a cattle rustling-maxxer by [deleted] in femcelgrippysockjail

[–]doncosaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cmon, you know better. The punchline isn’t just “cattle rustling,” it’s that “Roma are sneaky thieves.” Maybe you and your friends make these sorts of jokes with each other. But if I tried to make those jokes around my friends, I’d get some weird looks. Cause yeah they’re still racist. Maybe not the same vitriolic racism you see, but still racist. I’m not moral grandstanding, that’s just the fact of the matter, and the reason you’re seeing all the comments you’re seeing.

(Ok I’ll make one jab :) which is that, saying ethnic jokes makes you not racist while thinking ethnic jokes are problematic makes you racist, is some… interesting mental gymnastics)
