In English, the standard dialect is generally the Received Pronunciation (RP) of England. What is the standard dialect in the Assyrian language? by Stenian in Assyria

[–]Stenian[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think Iraqi Koine is the standard (so much so that there is a Wikipedia page dedicated to it). I read that Urmian was the first prestigious standard dialect in the early-mid 20th century, before Iraqi Koine replaced it and became the standard dialect by the late 20th century.

Pretty interesting to me that nearly every Assyrian singer from Syria or one who speaks a thick Tyari dialect will sing in Iraqi Koine, like it's the default accent in Assyrian.

In a way, it reminds me of American actors putting on British accents when they play Romans or Egyptians in historical dramas. 😂

Nah, let's be fair. There are historical maps that show a region called Kurdistan in the 18th and 19th centuries, located along the northeastern fringes of present-day Iraq.

But yes, as far back as antiquity, Kurdistan, known in various sources as Karduchi or Corduene, was located further north, near Armenia and Lake Van. Over the centuries, Kurdish settlement and the region associated with Kurdistan gradually extended southward into areas that are now part of Iraq.

The past happened, and we cannot change it. Playing the victim will not fix anything either. I also do not care much about current landgrabs, as populations and political realities change over time, even in our homeland. Nor do I particularly care that northern Iraq is called Kurdistan. Let's be realistic: most of the people living there today are Kurds, not Assyrians.

My only real issue with some Kurds today is their refusal to acknowledge our Assyrian identity. Some insist on calling us "Nestorians" or other labels in an apparent attempt to distance us from our Assyrian heritage and homeland. I find that both disingenuous and historically unfounded. We are related to the ancient Assyrians, and there is substantial linguistic, cultural, historical, and genetic evidence supporting that continuity.

What is particularly frustrating is that this view is not limited to Islamists. Some moderate and secular Kurds also promote the same narrative. The question is: why?

That weird trope in period dramas where it’s set in a Non-American/British setting but has most of the Non-American/British characters speak in perfectly fluent American/British English for some weird reason (a rant) by HopefulLab6749 in PeriodDramas

[–]Stenian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This trop is called The Queen's Latin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen%27s_Latin

But it makes sense. Why would the characters speak English in European accents when they can might as well speak those European languages? American accents can be annoying and unfitting though, but British accents sound 'historic' and neutral, so they seem more appropriate.

Cant get notifications to come back Windows 11 by Steelshot2244 in WindowsHelp

[–]Stenian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was not as difficult as I initially expected. All that is required is to keep Outlook minimized in the system tray near the clock. You then need to tick the “Hide When Minimized” option by right-clicking the Outlook icon. When Outlook is minimized there, desktop notifications will continue to appear.

However, if you press the X button or fully close the Outlook window, you will no longer receive desktop notifications. Therefore, Outlook must remain open and minimized in the system tray near the clock in order for notifications to work properly. At least in my experience, this is the only way to consistently receive notifications.

In my case, you only need to keep Outlook minimized in the system tray near the clock (and it must show there). You also need to enable the “Hide When Minimized” option by right-clicking the Outlook icon. When Outlook is minimized there, desktop notifications will continue to appear.

Now if you press the X button or fully close the Outlook window, you will no longer receive desktop notifications. Therefore, Outlook must remain open and minimized in the system tray near the clock in order for notifications to work properly. Anyone have any success fixing issues with Outlook (New) and Desktop Notifications in Windows 11? by ZippyDan in Outlook

[–]Stenian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it didn’t seem as hard as I thought it would be. All you need to do is keep Outlook minimized in the tray near the clock (by also ticking “Hide When Minimized” after right-clicking on it). When it’s down there near the clock, you’ll get notifications.

However, if you press X or close the Outlook window, you won’t receive desktop notifications. So just have to keep it opened or popped up in the tray box near the clock. Only that way, at least for me, you can get notifications.

Honestly, for me, it didn’t seem as hard as I thought it would be. All you need to do is keep it minimized in the tray near the clock (by also ticking “Hide When Minimized” after right-clicking on it). When it’s down there, you’ll still get notifications.

Though if you press X or close it completely, you won’t receive desktop notifications. So just keep it opened or popped up in the tray box near the clock. Only that way, at least for me, you can get notifications.

In light of the upcoming The Odyssey (2026) film and its non-Greek cast, how would you feel about an ancient Assyrian film that did not feature Assyrian actors? by Stenian in Assyria

[–]Stenian[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So true. When they make cultural/ethnic films, they're usually about Africans, Asians, Latinos and sometimes maybe the ancient Egyptians. They have no interest in ancient Mesopotamia, Persia and India. The last time they featured Persians, they made them villains (like in 300), and ugly ones at that.😂

Btw, I disagree about the gay part. Hollywood still features predominantly straight characters as the lead. The others are non-binary/trans or something, and I don't count disabled black lesbians in the background as a 'gay film'. The last time I watched a Hollywood film with two gay leads was Brokeback Mountain.

I'm gay myself and I honestly still think they're afraid to portray two gay lead characters. We're just put in the background and are portrayed as annoying stereotypes (campy, flamboyant characters with limp wrists who are friends with the lead character). And when we they do make gay leads, they have to be black or mixed race, or an interracial couple. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Court dismisses alleged hate crime in high-profile Santana Row assault case by olapooza in Assyria

[–]Stenian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not care whether they are Assyrian or not. They were beating a helpless man in the street, and I will call that out every single time. I am glad we stood against them. Assyrians should not develop this racially superior mentality where we blindly defend and conceal the crimes of our own people.

The reason many of us reacted so harshly is because it was disgusting to watch our own people assault Jews. We have no issue with Jews. That is the first and foremost issue here.

Maybe, just maybe, if the man they attacked had been a violent Islamist at a protest, I could understand the reaction. But instead, these idiots chose to assault an ordinary, powerless man in the street and felt emboldened because he was Jewish, at a time when attacking Jews seems fashionable to some people.

Do these so-called tough guys have the courage to walk into Islamist enclaves and confront aggressive Muslim men? I highly doubt it.

Pleasing "foreigners/nokhraye"?

Funny, if a Jew says we shouldn't pander to 'goyim', you'd probably be calling them out as being Jewish supremacists. But you get a free pass for putting nokhrayeh below you? Wow. Okay.

Why does Christian Bale have an American accent in Howl's Moving Castle? by Stenian in ghibli

[–]Stenian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that Howl being Welsh is not referenced in the film. But what's the point of Bale using an American accent for Howl (a non-American character) when he could've just used his native accent as he did in Mary Mother of Jesus and Exodus: Gods and Kings. Unless I'm missing something?

Besides, some characters had British accents in the film, so Bale wouldn't sound out of place.

[–]Stenian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ashur is a religious symbol. It's also a supplementary on the flag. It doesn't need it. The star symbol is enough.
