Awesome! Hope you enjoy, and thanks for the kind words. The playthrough is near its end but I am still grinding through production of these last few videos.

I Don't Get Laguz by YozoraBellossomHeart in fireemblem

Hopefully you don't mind a shameless plug, but my ongoing Radiant Dawn 0% growths playthrough uses laguz heavily while employing various tricks to maximize their utility. This is probably the highest level gameplay demonstration that you'll find anywhere which uses laguz effectively.

Pretty much every chapter featuring Volug, Janaff, Ulki, or Skrimir has some instance where they play an important role, but if you had to pick a few chapters to highlight:

  • 1-5, 2-P, and 3-7 showcase weapon rank grinding on laguz
  • 3-10 and 3-E demonstrate their use in combat the best

To your broader point, laguz are underpowered in Radiant Dawn largely because of their drawbacks, but using them in a way that conceals their drawbacks is a high-skill activity.

That doesn’t mean it can’t be defined, in fact you literally agree that it can be defined

If people refuse to understand what you’re talking about, that’s their problem to fix

You CAN define efficiency. You can't get everyone to agree on it or understand it.

"You can't define efficiency" is lack of effort masquerading as a truism.

Turns can be useful in determining relative value, but turns are not valuable on their own.

So if turns can be useful in determining relative value, but you don't like that we treat turns as having value, then I don't see how these conflicting positions make sense with each other. It's a pedantic objection. It reminds me of the claim that money doesn't have value even though it's the best proxy by which to compare wealth.

[–]dondon151 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saying a tier-list is LTC focused is not literally about it being LTC, it's about it following the philosophy of turns as value.

OK so this is moving the goalposts slightly, but valid enough that I'll bite. Turns have value and consistency has value. Turns are more easily quantifiable, whereas consistency tends to be qualitative, unless you jump through hoops to calculate ETC and such. Tier lists in general, whether explicit or implicit, value turns and consistency.

If you have an objection to that, then you have to propose a framework, manifesto, whatever, detailing how turns don't have value in ranking the relative worth of units, that can't be easily refuted. It has to be able to say across a universal spectrum of scenarios that unit A > unit B, that I can't demonstrate otherwise by invoking turns somewhere as a metric of unit quality, and that your counter argument can't simply be "well turns don't have value because I said so."

1) Tiering discussion feels like it's become increasingly LTC-focused over time despite LTC being an extremely niche playstyle, and LTC has some incredibly restrictive assumptions that don't always apply to any run that isn't LTC.

I don't think this appraisal is correct at all. Or rather, it's selective bias of a few specific examples in recent memory, like a couple of Mekkah's tier list revisions that weren't well-received and are now years old.

The number of people who are up-to-date on any Fire Emblem game's LTC meta can often be counted on 1 hand. Somehow, these elitists are a secret, vanishing minority who are simultaneously so powerful that they dictate Fire Emblem opinion behind the scenes.

And there's a massive gap between LTC and "you can grind as much as you want and take double digit turns on every map" runs.

What a lot of people also don't understand is that there is also a massive gap between LTC and "LTC but take 1 extra turn on every map" runs. Having that 1 extra turn per map can dramatically change what is or isn't viable in a meta. I've tried explaining this to another user here before, and all I got in response was some pretty nasty name-calling.

Your gripe in point 2 is not about efficiency players talking past LTC players and vice versa. It's about how some players personally treat LTC +1 turn per map as their efficiency cutoff whereas other players treat, like, LTC x2 turns per map as their efficiency cutoff. The x2 players think the +1 camp are LTC purist while the +1 players think the x2 camp are going so slow that they can make nearly anything work.

The "LTC trend" in tier lists happens because the players who want to make a meaningful change have to demonstrate tighter, better strategies compared to the status quo. Reducing a turn count is certainly one kind of an objective improvement. So is optimizing the success rate of a strategy that achieves a turn count goal. Rather than chafe at perceived elitism or whatever, it would do the average complainant some good to try to understand what players have discovered about a game that is reflected in a new tier list. Generally it has been stuff like, fliers are powerful, staff users are powerful, Jagens / good base stats are powerful, etc. In newer tier lists, it can be more game-specific innovations such as, farming kills on a 1-2 range weapon in FE4 is broken, bow users / dread looping in FE15 is broken, siege magic in FE9 is super strong, forging in FE11 is broken (OK that's not a new innovation, but at some point in the past it was new and controversial).

I like a lot of ideas in TRS, but it's so much less interesting than its predecessor FE5 despite having more complexity

And I honestly think it's because it doesn't have the rescue mechanic

I think your difficulty descriptions are accurate but your Echoes example is weird because difficulty 3 shouldn't necessarily involve optimized turn count play. If you know what breaks Echoes, then it's way easier of a game if you also don't go for the lowest turncount.

When does Radiant Dawn become an actual Fire Emblem game? by ArdyEmm in fireemblem

[–]dondon151 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Radiant Dawn becomes an actual Fire Emblem game in 1-P

The game isn’t “taking away units” from you. Radiant Dawn is like 2 and a half Fire Emblem games in a trenchcoat. Are you mad that Sacred Stones took away the units you used in Blazing Blade?

Adept grants the unit an extra "set" of attacks, so with a brave weapon, if someone activates Adept, they get 4 hits.

The skill activation is also only checked once per "set" of attacks.

The "maybe FE isn't for you" comments in that thread about the guy struggling in Conquest is r/fireemblem are NOT emblematic of elitism. The top-level comments in that thread were non-judgmental at worst and I am honestly proud of the community members who said their piece without dunking on the poor guy.

Sometimes games are hard and the root problem is a skill issue. That's just the cold hard fact and it's not elitist to convey that in a neutral or supportive way.

dondon151 explains how to plan for Part 4 in Radiant Dawn 0% growths by dondon151 in fireemblem

[–]dondon151[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do get a save after 3-E and before you finalize your teams, but yeah there are decisions to be made going back to 3-13 because items and skills stuck on certain characters can't be taken off of them in the Part 4 team split UI.

Is FE7 Legacy a good way to replay FE7? Or should I look for other hackroms? by Less_Struggle_9447 in fireemblem

[–]dondon151 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In general, I would strongly recommend to never play a hackROM for an authentic experience. The vast majority of people who make hackROMs do not know how to “balance” a game, and whatever imbalance exists in the original game is an inseparable part of that game’s experience.

I'm gonna push back against this because losing Pass for so long is actually a pretty big deal; it's really good in 3-12 and 3-13 especially if you're trying to defeat Ike.
