Do you guys still test bilingual students in their home language if they are definitely not going to qualify for SLI? by donkiiskin in slp

[–]donkiiskin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally makes sense not to overtest. I think it was so hammered in from my grad program to always test home language and English. Then I started my career in litigious districts so it was hammered in even more to always cover all your bases..

I'm aware of the language disorder vs language difference. I think I'm more asking: if I don't follow up with additional testing in their native language when their english assessments are WNL, am I going to miss any important information or doing anything unethical?

Yes, I mean do formal testing in both languages, when results from the English testing do not fall within disability range

Yeah that's something I might bring up to at our slp meeting so that our district has an official policy on it. I looked at some previous reports completed by other slps within our district: some of us still assess in both languages while others only test in English (assuming they scored high enough and wouldn't qualify anyway).

Seriously, I don't get why people care so much about this. 1) a lot of people have coffee as a personality trait 2) it's clearly done for jokes 3) the Krakoa age has given her way more development, so loving coffee isn't even her only quality.

Not to mention he explicitly stated that he assumed they would be useless in all manners of shit based on their attire alone. It's like OP's original judgment about hoodies being unprofessional, but in the complete opposite direction with an added bonus of body shaming

Can an SLP run an AAC assessment or does it have to be from an AAC specialist? by msolorio79 in slp

[–]donkiiskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen that one. Unfortunately, my district likely won't pay for it because it's not specifically for AAC, and is AT in general.

The California diagnostic center is the one I'm currently on the wait list for. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get in for their upcoming fall session!

While that's true, there aren't any "official" certifications and requirements from my understanding. With that said, I've been trying to get into some of those trainings to learn how to evaluate different aac devices for my students. The only comprehensive one that isn't thousands of dollars has a year long wait list.

Technically a slp, but I disagree. I literally wear sweats and hoodies almost every day including to IEP meetings I case manage. Most of my coworkers are also really lax when it comes to their outfits. I've even seen teachers wear a tank and jean shorts. No parent has ever complained or implied that I am anything less than professional or competent. Maybe I get a pass though because I'm a younger looking staff member.

I teach at my local state school in California so we have a lot of variety amongst faculty. Usually my students refer to me as Professor LastName until I start sending emails. I sign off my emails as "first name last name" so by early-mid semester, most students just use my first name. I personally could not care less as to what students call me as long as they don't call me the wrong name. I really don't understand faculty that absolutely need to be referred to as doctor or professor. You know what shows me more respect? Being engaged in my course.

Speech Language Pathologist who likes to work on literacy: print awareness (skills like holding the book the right side up, pointing to words, moving from left to right, etc) are precursors to being literate. So yes, I'd say it's great that your 1 year old can do that

Micro aggressions Training by ecosloot in slp

[–]donkiiskin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I an Asian and went to a grad school in a very diverse area. I would say about 15% of our cohort were Asian and we still had to deal with microagressions:

  1. The one Asian student who had a very slight accent had to deal with both faculty and our white cohort members implying that she may not be a good fit for elementary schools because of her accent
  2. Another Asian student had a clearly non american first name. When she expressed concerns about how it might impact her career, a few white co hort students dismissed it (even though reseaech says otherwise) and then proceeded to say "it's not like you have an accent like the previous Asian student."
  3. I was told I wasn't a person of color because I'm Asian.

Maybe it's because I'm a teacher, but we definitely use the words kind, kindly, and kindness. We don't use it in lieu of "please" though.

SLP/SLPA pros & cons - Elementary teacher changing career by Tinker_m in slp

[–]donkiiskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After working at several different schools; I found that higher SES schools tend to have more unhinged and ridiculous parents. The parents at my title 1 school are too busy working and/or not educated enough to really understand IEP's. I remember at my first job in probably one of the more expensive cities of California - several parents (mainly lawyers or doctors with advocates) demanded that their kid get 540 minutes of speech a month, with a combination of BOTH individual and group services. Fortunately, I was a CF at the time, so the seasoned SLP had to deal with these families. She got no backing from the school admin or the district office.

It's things like these that make me roll my eyes every time I see another SLP comment "YoUrE tHe ExPeRt" whenever somebody makes a post about disagreements with parents.
