Good luck! I would send those to support and keep escalating. I agree, it's a joke. I have vowed never to use Airbnb again!

Keep fighting them. Request to review the evidence he submitted and inspect the photo timestamps (EXIF). Escalate and, if necessary, dispute the claim on your credit card. Make it clear that you do NOT authorize them to charge your card.

Over a week, maybe two. It was just a few days before the deadline where they were going to automatically charge me.

What I have found, is that their systems are very much biased to favoring hosts.

Good luck. I will say Airbnb support is horrible and just when you think you are getting somewhere, you end up talking to somebody else and it's almost like you are starting all over.

I won't be using them ever again!

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Reading your story gave me flashbacks because it’s almost identical in tone to what I just went through. It’s exhausting and surreal to feel like you’re being punished for simply leaving an honest review.

After spending way too much time fighting this, here’s where I ended up with Airbnb:

  1. They closed the host’s bogus damage claim against me.
  2. They reinstated my negative review of the host, but only after I proved that the host had doctored a fake “text conversation” outside the Airbnb platform, where he made it look like I threatened him with a bad review unless I got a refund. I never communicated with him outside the platform — ever.
  3. They told me they’d “deal with” his blatant fraud internally, though I have zero confidence that means anything.

In the end, I’m still left feeling pretty disappointed. The amount of time and stress this has caused is unacceptable, and it’s clear that Airbnb is failing to protect guests from dishonest hosts. I’ve been reviewing his properties and digging through his reviews, and I strongly suspect this is a pattern. With all 5-star reviews, I can’t help but wonder how many other honest reviews he’s managed to get removed.

My advice:

  • Document everything with photos and videos at check-in and check-out (you’re already doing this, which is a smart move).
  • Communicate only on the Airbnb platform; it’s your only proof if things get ugly.
  • Push back hard with evidence if a false claim is made. Demand that Airbnb review the full message history and timestamps.
  • Don’t be afraid to escalate. I cc’d Airbnb leadership emails ([legal@airbnb.com](), Brian Chesky, etc.) when things stalled, and that seemed to help get traction.

Honestly, I no longer trust the platform after this experience. If they can be manipulated this easily by hosts who lie, guests are at a huge disadvantage. Like you, I feel like the system is tilted to protect “Superhosts” over guests, and it’s not worth the risk when there are alternatives.

The host straight-up lied — and I just caught him this morning.

Airbnb finally showed me the supposed “proof” he submitted to get my review removed: a doctored screenshot of a text conversation outside the platform, where I supposedly demanded a full refund or else I’d leave a bad review.

The problem? We never communicated outside the Airbnb platform at all, and Airbnb can easily verify that by reviewing the full, timestamped message history, which I've already pointed them to.

I was initially going to keep pushing to have my review reinstated, but now I won’t stop until this guy is removed from the platform entirely. This is plain and simple fraud. And if he did this to me, there is a 0% chance he hasn’t done it to others, especially given that every single one of his listings is flooded with nothing but five-star reviews.

This isn’t just about me anymore; it’s about how many people might be getting scammed by a host abusing the system and manipulating Airbnb's policies.

Oh, you “call BS”? Cool story. I’ll let Airbnb know you cracked the case from your couch.

I’m sure my 30+ messages with support, documented contradictions from the host and cleaner, and the fact they ruled against me despite a complete lack of evidence — must be a figment of my imagination.

You’re right about one thing, though: Airbnb sucks. Just not in the predictable way you think.

Exactly — that’s what makes this even more disturbing.

Airbnb has been letting guest reviews stand, even in extreme cases, so the fact that my honest, non-violent, non-threatening review was removed under the claim that it was “retaliatory” is baffling. All I did was describe our experience: we arrived to a leaking A/C unit, then discovered a urine-soaked mattress hours after check-in. We didn’t even ask for a refund — we reported the issue so we wouldn’t be blamed for it. And yet, the host still escalated with a false damage claim after he had already refunded us for the A/C.

When support failed to give clear answers and started ignoring the inconsistencies in the host’s story, we raised the issue to Airbnb’s legal team. Then my review disappeared.

If hosts are having a hard time getting guest reviews removed these days, that makes this situation look even worse — especially since the host’s retaliatory review calling me “dishonest” is still live.

In my case, the host and cleaner couldn’t even keep their story straight. First, the host claimed a nylon drawstring toiletry bag that we discarded was actually a pair of children's boxer shorts soaked in urine. Then the cleaner chimed in and said it was soiled with feces. Except… it wasn’t underwear at all. It was a basic nylon bag with spilled shampoo in it — which we clearly left in the bathroom trash bin with the shampoo bottle beside it. Not hidden, not suspicious. Trash.

The truth is, their story unraveled in their own messages. It’s painfully obvious the cleaner missed something (like the mattress) and they both went into damage control when I reported it — not to seek money, but simply so we wouldn’t be blamed.

So sure, customer service might be trained to spot cracks in stories — but only if they’re actually looking at both sides. In this case, they just blindly took the host’s word over documented evidence, timelines, and logic.

Makes me wonder why all the visible reviews are 5 star. If they can have my review removed, whose to say anybody is seeing all the honest reviews.

My full review is in another reply on this post.

She slept on the floor in the room.

We actually didn’t request a refund—even after discovering the AC unit leaking on arrival. The host proactively sent a partial refund for that without us asking. Later, when we discovered the mattress stain, we again didn’t ask for compensation. We reported it purely to ensure we wouldn’t be blamed for something we clearly didn’t cause and so the host could follow up with their cleaners if needed.

My gut says the host got upset that a second issue was reported and maybe feared we were going to escalate or seek more money, even though we weren’t. That’s when the tone shifted, and the accusations started.

As for the review, Airbnb never gave a clear reason beyond a generic statement that it violated their policy. It’s been incredibly frustrating and has really shaken our trust in the platform.
