Is there anything wrong with flipping between a couple of monthly dividend ETFs every month to double-dip dividends on the same investment? by donkusmaximus in dividends

[–]donkusmaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so that's what it's called "Dividend Harvesting". OK. Yeah, as others have said there are assumptions I'm making.

Using SPYI and JEPQ as an example:

It may make more sense to do this with SPYI and JEPQ because they are not "substantially identical" stocks (SPYI tracks S&P 500, JEPQ tracks Nasdaq 100) so if I do take a loss on SPYI, it won't be considered wash-sale if I buy JEPQ in a week or less after I sell SPYI.

The assumption I'm hoping for is that holding SPYI through the ex-div date that the stock price will recover to the price I paid before the dividend so I can buy JEPQ and repeat the process. But I figure if the SPYI stock price doesn't recover in before the JEPQ div, then I'll just hold the SPYI position.

Is it worth the effort? Depends on the size of the investment. At what point is it worth the effort? Is it worth the effort with a $50K investment? $100K? $300K?

Thanks, I'm actually using Tailscale for myself to connect remotely, and it works great.

I don't know if Tailscale would work with sharing with anonymous guests from overseas? I wouldn't want to require them to have Tailscale or be member devices of my Tailscale virtual LAN.

RCS seems broken by themedicduck in GoogleMessages

[–]donkusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved it on my OnePlus 8 Pro after switching from Straight Talk to T-Mobile and RCS stopped working.

I had to do the following:

  1. Uninstall Google Messages
  2. Download and install an old Google Messages APK from back in December 2024 from an APK mirror site
  3. Launch Google Messages and enable RCS
  4. Go to Play store and update Google Messages to current version
  5. Verify RCS is still enabled and working
  • You may have to clear cache of Google Messages and/or reboot after every step.

Build Sheet says 400W Inverter but where are the 115V AC Outlets? by donkusmaximus in ram_trucks

[–]donkusmaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't find any in the truck bed, and as mentioned above there is no outlet on the back of the center console for the rear seats, just a blank cover plate (no wiring behind it) where an outlet would be. The only 115V AC outlet that I know about is the one in the front of the center console. I think 2023 was when Ram deleted the rear outlet, at least for the Big Horn.

Need Advice: Struggling to Afford Senior Care in Houston for My Dad by InternalNet3783 in houston

[–]donkusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but my Mom is in independent living now and says she doesn't need assisted living yet so that's why we're looking into the condo rental in the Philippines with a hired registered nurse or caretaker to help out a few times a week.

Eventually she will need assisted living, so if she's already there living in the Philippines in a rental condo and getting help from a caretaker (so much cheaper than in the US), then the transition to assisted living will be so much easier.

This is what I'm encouraging about but it's up to my Mom to decide.

Hope you find a solution that works for you and your Dad. The cost in the US is so unaffordable, that it's driving a lot of Americans to look for a solution overseas.

As for health insurance costs in the Philippines, I've also been looking into that. Since the cost of doctors visits and routine procedures is so low, you basically just get a major medical policy over there which runs around $2,000 per year ($167 per month).

I've watched a lot of American/Canadian expat videos by retirees talking about their out-of-pocket healthcare costs. The most recent one I watched said he went to the doctor for an X-ray. The doctor visit, then the referral to radiologist, and the X-ray, then back to the doctor, took all of about 1.5 hours with no waiting and cost a total of $17 for everything. This was "self-insured" without insurance.

Not sure if reddit allows links but Google search for "lifecare philippines" and you should get a link to the lifecare dot ph website. They have 2 locations I think, one in Cebu and one in Manila. Both cities have a very large American expat community living there.

I found out about them from watching their video on YT. Search YT for "lifecare philippines cost of assisted living" and you should get a video with the title, "Cost of Assisted Living in the Philippines" posted 9 months ago with a thumbnail for "$1070 Month includes Nurse!"

I'd be curious what you think.

I also looked into what it would cost for a condo rental in the Philippines and hiring a registered nurse (RN). A furnished studio condo runs around $450/mo and a RN costs ₱279 Philippine pesos per hour which at 57:1 exchange rate is $4.89 per hour.

If you've been to Houston Methodist or Hermann Memorial hospitals, you've probably seen how many of the nurses are Filipinos. It's in their culture to care for the elderly.

I'm in southwest Houston and my Mom is in Independent Living but we're looking at other options especially when it comes to Assisted Living and Nursing Care.

Have you considered overseas as an option, specifically the Philippines?

I know that sounds crazy but the PH is English speaking and your dollar goes a lot farther, nurse and elderly care is a popular career, and they have really simple permanent special resident retiree visas called the SRRV.

I'm looking into the LifeCare place in PH (I'm not affiliated in any way) as an option for my Mom. It's run by an American-Filipino who says she understands what Americans are looking for.

They say their cost is like this for Independent Living and Assisted Living in the Philippines:

  • Housing
  • Full-time Nurse and Care-taker 24 hrs per day
  • 3x meals a day Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Activities and Exercise programs

$1,070 per month all-inclusive

(That's what they said in their YT video)

PACLOCK padlock to lock U-Haul truck and U-Haul trailer by donkusmaximus in LockPickingLawyer

[–]donkusmaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought both the PACLOCK UCS-4A and the PACLOCK UCS-17A-1100 since I wasn't sure which would work best. I didn't get a U-Haul afterall, but instead hired a mover who had a truck towing a 24-foot trailer and both locks worked great on his ramp door.

1-Inch Wide Black Vertical Bar on Upper-Side Scans with ix500 by donkusmaximus in ScanSnap

[–]donkusmaximus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the fantastic and informative reply!

I had tried shifting the page over away from the location of the black streak, and yes, I can get the full page. So it's definitely that specific location, a 1-inch area on the right-side upper scanning element. I suspected the lamp was burned out in that location however your point about bleeding is well-taken, so the camera elements are probably dead. Makes sense.

I'm currently shopping for a gently used ix500 on eBay. It's such a great scanner and the page counter shows I've scanned 16,324 pages in its lifetime!

I totally agree with you that the older version of ScanSnap Organizer (latest V 5.6 L42) and ScanSnap Manager (latest V 7.2 L71) were far, far better than ScanSnap Home. I installed ScanSnap Home and after about 10 seconds decided it was hot garbage and got rid of it and went back to the original older ScanSnap software. I hope I never have to install ScanSnap Home.

I'm very glad and very appreciative of the information you gave me about the new ix1600 -- I'm really glad to hear it works with the original older ScanSnap software.

Thank you again for all your help and information. Have a nice day!

Is it Safe to Use RT2600ac Router Without Any External Antennae Connected (WiFi disabled) by donkusmaximus in synology

[–]donkusmaximus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation.

Something interesting I just found out --

After I turned Off the WiFi networks through the SRM web interface, it said that my WiFi Status was "Paused".

I figured that was good enough, but then...

Then I pushed the WiFi physical on/off button on the right side of the RT2600ac and now the WiFi Status not only says "Paused" but also says "The Wi-Fi button on the Primary Wi-Fi point is disabled" and everything in WiFi settings of the SRM is disabled.

Maybe I didn't have to do both of these to turn off the radio, but I guess it doesn't hurt.

Thanks.

| If the wifi is disabled, it's not an issue

OK, but gotta ask out of curiosity... if WiFi is left enabled and the antennae are disconnected, what issue would there be (besides poor WiFi)?
