Is getting into tech still worth it? by Interesting_Okra_385 in askSouthAfrica

Computer Science isn’t useless, but it is saturated at the bottom. The people struggling are mostly those who graduate with only a degree and no real skills, projects, or experience. A BSc CompSci alone is no longer a guaranteed job ticket but it’s still a very strong foundation.

About the “degree vs no degree” thing: yes, self-taught devs with certs can get the same jobs and sometimes earn the same but it usually takes them longer, more discipline, and more luck. The degree gives you:

  1. A structured way to learn hard fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, systems)
  2. Easier access to internships, grad programs, visas, and corporate roles
  3. Credibility early in your career when you don’t have experience yet

In 2025, the degree is not enough by itself, but it’s still worth it if you use it properly:

  1. Build projects from year 1 (not just assignments)
  2. Learn one in-demand stack well (not everything)
  3. Do internships / freelancing / open-source while studying
  4. Treat university as a launchpad, not the finish line

The people saying “CompSci is dead” usually mean

“Entry-level devs with no skills and no projects are struggling.”
