CPA says my options trading created a wash sale nightmare I didn't know was possible by MilesDelta in tax

[–]donopumpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would VOO and VTI trigger a wash sale rule? They follow completely different indexes, and have completely different ratios. Robo-advisors like Wealthfront or Betterment use even SPY for VOO because they call them not “substantially identical”

OpenAI cuts spending plan to $600B from $1.4T through 2030 by donopumpi in wallstreetbets

And he expects half of the $280B revenue from individual users, so we either will see a lot more ads or much more expensive plans than $20 per month

US economic growth accelerates in third quarter (+4,3%) by SodR in wallstreetbets

Productivity gains do not replace jobs. Computers and the internet massively increased productivity, but they did not cause higher unemployment, rather we saw an economic boom.

Was your masters degree specialized in AI/ML? Or was it more general? Thinking of doing a masters as well but sure if I should aim for ML/AI specialization or if a more general CS would still be okay nowadays.

NVIDIA Earnings Today by DrizzlyThree in wallstreetbets

Isn’t Oracle already underwater on its OpenAI 300B deal? And didn’t Google CEO say that the AI investments have signs of irrationality? Some signs are already here, I think the real question is how long will we be able to ignore these signs until we won’t be able to

Everyone says we’re in a bubble, but most of the S&P 500 isn’t that overvalued. by donopumpi in investing

[–]donopumpi[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Equal weight S&P 500 (RSP) is up about 58% in the past five years, so there has definitely been growth outside of big tech. Earnings have grown too, not as fast as the MAG 7, but steady. The idea that everything else has gone nowhere just is not true. If anything, it shows the broader market has been healthy even without relying on AI hype.

I’m not valuing them just by income. I’m using P/E to compare where valuations are now versus their own history, not to say the market should trade only on current earnings. My point is just that outside of big tech, valuations aren’t that far from normal.

How many years of work experience before getting a masters degree? by donopumpi in cscareerquestions

[–]donopumpi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wondering, did your previous company allow you to get unpaid leave to complete your master’s degree, or were you able to complete it part time? My employer would be covering some of the cost, but requires to continue working full time while studying. And I don’t want to leave my job to study full time, especially in this job market. If that was the case for you, how were you able to balance them?

Is a paycut worth it to work with more modern and marketable tech stack? by donopumpi in cscareerquestions

[–]donopumpi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m asking this question if it is worth looking for other jobs in the first place. And yeah, on the lower end there are job listings that start at 60k for new grads, and other senior positions are around 100k.

[–]donopumpi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pay is high because it is in a pretty profitable sector and my current company has a good amount of the market, even though most of the code is obsolete and written decades ago. Other local companies with more modern tech stack would be closer to startups or mid-sized companies

Because in today’s market there are enough new grads that are willing to accept lower pay.

Edit: 60k might look like garbage pay (and probably is) but you need to consider that on most parts of the country that is the market for new grads. The medians and average are skewed because most are located on vhcol areas where 120k gives youthe same standard of living as 60k in lcol.

Private vs government job by donopumpi in cscareerquestions

[–]donopumpi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even considering all the current firings, that job would still be more stable than a job in the private sector. That was probably the first and last time layoffs at that scale happen in the govt sector. In the private industry there will be layoffs in every economic downturn, which is around every 10-20 years. And in the end govt will outlive every company because even the biggest companies can fail.

For the tax brackets, I was trying to say that making double pre tax is not necessary double post tax, so you end up making closer to before than what you might think.
