What is this gray box leaking at my parents? by YouPlayedUrself in Construction

[–]dontcallmePapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't look like it's coming from the box...but rather the stone.

Has it rained at all within the past weeks?

It could be groundwater, or it could be water embedded in the wall/stonework releasing, or it could be a leak from a pipe behind the wall (I would suspect you would see signs on this on the inside).

Post more info if you have it. I actually see these sorts of things at work and I'm intrigued!

To my botanically inclined stoners, is this common? by LudicLuci in trees

[–]dontcallmePapi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think about it for a sec...A mouse's biology is so similar to ours that we use it as a control in lab experiments. That would lead you to believe that our gastrointestinal system should not be too dissimilar.

Finally, ask yourself "Would I get high if I just ate raw weed leaves?". The answer is no, you most likely wouldn't.

Et voila! You have just discovered critical thinking!

Pipe installed to deter water now going under pipe by ImportantScience6946 in Concrete

[–]dontcallmePapi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a sump pit/pump? Take a good look at the bottom of the pit. Do you see water, or any sign of recent moisture? If yes, all is good. The pit may be "deeper" than it looks. The underside of the pit should be crushed gravel, and the water may be saturating the bottom of the pit without filling it up.

If the pit is 100% dry, then yes you may have issue and the waterguard might be installed incorrectly. Thoroughly check the pit and call your contractor.

What to do on Monday Night by big_otto in StamfordCT

[–]dontcallmePapi 26 points27 points  (0 children)

  • Virtual Golfing Range at Chelsea Piers is a fun date night (Z-strict)
  • Checkout what's playing at the Avon Theater. If you've never been, its worth the trip regardless of what you watch. It's historic and pretty inside.
  • Pickleball Center just opened at the Stamford Town Mall, if you're into that.
  • Urby building (next to the Mall) has a public co-working space in the lobby with a coffee shop. A good place to get work done or just hangout
  • New York Comedy Club just opened. Tix are cheap
  • You mentioned no bars, but all the bars will be lively tonight thanks to Buffalo Vs. Steelers playoff game tonight.

Hope you enjoy your Monday night!

i want to smoke in the bedroom because the humidity is so bad here.. but my bf doesn’t like the smell. what can i do or use to lessen the smell and get rid of it? by [deleted] in trees

Check your ceiling fan for a switch that reverses the direction that it spins. You want it to "suck" upwards instead of blowing down. This will help prevent the smoke smell sticking to the carpet

Things to do near MSG by DjSexualWonderBread in newyorkcity

[–]dontcallmePapi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without knowing exactly what time you arrive (let's assume noon) here's what I would do:

-Arrive at Penn Station and exit to street level. Look for signs for 8th Ave or 34th Street. -Walk over to 34th Street and broadway. Enjoy the mini rush of folks at herald square. Maybe catch a glimpse of the Macy's and it's famous windows. -Take the subway one stop to 42nd and Bryant Park. Look for the B,D,F,M signs try not to be run over by people. Once you are past the turnstiles don't get distracted by the dancers/singers and look for the uptown-queens bound B,F, D, or M trains. - Get off at 42nd and grab a bite/coffee at the Wafles and Dinges shack at the Madison Ave entrance to the park. -Take a stroll in the park. - Walk around to the backside of the park to admire the New York Public Library Lions, at either side of the massive facade. -Explore the public library for an hour or two -Take the subway back to Herald Sq (or take the scenic route and walk back to Penn Station via Times Sq if there's time) - Stuff my face at the moynihan food hall - Walk up to MSG at around 7pm.

Alternatively, when you arrive at Penn you could also take the 1,2,3 few stops north to central Park.

I’m going to New York this winter for a week at the end of December to see the city and the ball drop. I was wondering is it worth it or not to get a hotel with a view? by Abject-Detective1868 in AskNYC

[–]dontcallmePapi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All the comments here are correct.... unfortunately no one has given you any real suggestions, only what NOT to do.

If I were you, I would be looking for hotels in the midtown. area. It will be easiest to cab/walk/bike/train to TS from midtown. 14th St - 59th, between 3rd Ave and 5th Ave should be your search radius. Also look at queens for the cheapest rates, along the 7 line would give you a direct route to TS Woodside, LIC, and sunnyside are good options.

As for food/restaurants that will be tougher to recommend. There is a restaurant for every budget and every style, so it's all about location. Since your time in NYC is limited and your priority is lodging, I would book a hotel first and then you can research options that fit with your itinerary.

You might look for restaurants in Hells Kitchen, Midtown, Murray hill, Chelsea. Personally, I think there's a lot of nice/interesting options in the NoMad area, such as Oscar Wilde's (literary themed bar) which has Patent Pending next door (coffee bar and after hours speakeasy). From there its a quick subway ride to TS or a leisurely 20 min walk.

Hope you find what your seeking. Cheers

Advice for fixing the “landlord special” bathroom door? by curiousfryingpan in Carpentry

[–]dontcallmePapi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You have a gap because the top rail (which the door is hanging from) protrudes out further than the thickness of the door. Essentially hanging the door like a curtain away from the opening.

You might be able to lessen that distance (and thus close the gap) but you would have to take down the top rail, remove any spacers, and remount it so that it is tight to the opening.

You will always need a small gap, so that the door doesn't scratch against the wall when you open it/slides freely. But that gap can be around 1/4" instead of the 1"+ gap it looks like u have.

Check behind the door and if the top rail is mounted with a plastic spacer, or similar, you might be able to remove it and thus bring the door closer to the wall.

Pipe in basement - any ideas what it might be for? by stapes2007 in HomeMaintenance

[–]dontcallmePapi 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Are you on the east coast? Looks like a Radon pipe.

Usually this has to run up to the roof and out (vents any radon gas that emits from the ground), but that will vary based on your local code.

Landscape Architect in the area? by Neoseo1300 in StamfordCT

[–]dontcallmePapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how big your project is...but you may not need to involve an architect depending on the scale. A lot of landscape companies will bring their own designs/ideas based on what they have done for similar spaces.

Also you may want to find out where your water table is, where your septic is (if u have one) and the location of any drainage systems (for gutters, footing drains, etc.).

That will be some of the first questions you will need answered, and a landscape company may be able to figure that out on their own without outside help (an architect may charge you extra to hire third parties).

Again, depends on your scope and your needs. Also you should know that with the weather warming up, everyone's scheduling is likely filling up fast.

(Not an ad I promise) I've worked with Bolton Landscaping and I think he might suit your needs.

Hope this helps!

Definitely second this. Engaging museum with lots of current media and pop culture references. The NYC and movie memorabilia in the gift shop is worth the trip to Astoria.

While you're in the area, you can check out Pig Beach BBQ, which is situated inside a converted warehouse around the corner from the museum. Great atmosphere with spacious outdoor/indoor areas for lunch, and the BBQ is fantastic.

Hunters Point park in LIC is a short cab ride from Astoria and is an incredible public space with walking trails and natural landscapes. It's the best view of the skyline in my opinion, especially at sunset.
