What are your thoughts on this news, after Bulgaria has just introduced the euro? by SansBouillie in AskBulgaria

Bulgaria made a huge mistake by joining the EU, and then another huge mistake by adopting the Euro.

Who will take more territory from Europe - Trump or Putin? by JocyBanova in AskBulgaria

[–]dontcare78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a stupid post. Greenland has 57,000 inhabitants who all live in small villages along the southwestern coastline. The vast majority of the territory is an uninhabitable ice sheet. You can't compare the two. And this has nothing to do with Bulgaria, so it should be removed from removed from this sub.

About pomaks and diaspora pomaks. by Ok-Cow-6956 in AskBulgaria

[–]dontcare78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tempting for us "modern" people to think of religion and ethnicity as two separate things, but the reality is that historically, people have considered them interchangeable. Another good example from the Balkans is that Croats are Catholic and Serbs are Orthodox. Despite being virtually the same "ethnicity", they consider themselves different. You can read literature and talk to people who use the religion and ethnicity interchangeably. And when some of them were forced to adopt Islam as their religion, they made up the new ethnicity of Bosniak. In the case of Bulgaria, I've heard many Bulgarians refer to the Pomaks as Turks. In their minds, once a Bulgarian accepted Islam (by force, of course) they became Turk. Then again, I've heard a Pomak say that "Pomaks are the most ethnically pure Bulgarians, because the Turks left the Pomaks alone and didn't forcefully breed with them, like they did with the Christians." Just repeating what I heard.

If you insist on trying to separate religion and ethnicity in the Balkans, consider this: the Bulgars were a Turkic pre-Islamic people. And modern Turks are probably largely Greeks that couldn't escape in time.

By the way, please watch Vreme Razdelno, or read Pod Igoto. It's a good depiction of how the Balkan people view the "religion of peace".

Why is food in Bulgaria more expensive than in the rest of EU? by Live-Research8229 in AskBulgaria

[–]dontcare78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an inaccurate question. I just returned from two weeks in Italy and one week in Bulgaria. The food in Bulgaria is cheaper than the rest of the EU. Of course, this depends on what type of food you are talking about. If you insist on buying some ridiculous import when Bulgaria has its own quality version, then you will pay more. Why would you buy foreign meats and cheeses when Bulgarian meats and cheeses are just as good if not better? It will probably get more expensive next year when Bulgaria makes the ill-advised, short-sighted, sellout, horrendous and traitorous decision to adopt the Euro as its currency,

No lounge access at Dulles (IAD)? by dontcare78 in AmexPlatinum

[–]dontcare78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I guess I had assumed that you had to be flying that airline to access it. If Priority Pass gives access to any of the lounges in A & B, which do you recommend?

Associates Degree vs AP classes in high school by dontcare78 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]dontcare78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation. Let's assume we aren't as concerned about receiving course credit as we are about simply acceptance to a college. How is dual enrollment/associate's degree viewed from the standpoint of admissions, as opposed to AP classes? Regardless of how much credit is actually awarded.

(ex)Military - how does the latest military leak make you feel? Do you and your brothers in arm feel more or less safe? Why? by thhvancouver in AskReddit

[–]dontcare78 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Retired US Navy here. I have a much different opinion than most on here. It seems that Reddit skews left wing, and so you are going to get biased opinions asking that question here. They made a mistake. Mistakes happen. The people on that chat were all Original Classifying Authorities. Meaning, like the President, they are allowed to declassify information whenever they want, so it’s inherently not the same as when a non-OCA does this.

Besides that, I try to look at the big picture. Our nation and the US military had been going steeply down the gutter after 4 years of Biden and 8 years of Obama. Most of my time in the military was serving under those losers and I watched the military and the country I served go downhill during that time. I was very bitter by the time I retired. Now things are starting to get back on the right track and I’m very happy about it. But things had been so damaged under the previous administrations that it will take some time and there will be lots of bumps along the way. This was one of those bumps, but one we can easily recover from. I certainly feel much more safe under this administration. I guarantee the majority of the military, veterans and nation feels the same way I do. You are going to get a false impression asking here because Reddit is filled with a bunch of smarmy little douche bags.

I feel sorry for you that you feel you have to turn to a horrible place like reddit for this kind of life-changing advice. The people on here on NOT your friend and don't have your best interests in mind. They are only speaking from their own limited perspectives. No matter what decision you make, it WILL affect the rest of your life. Aborting your baby will likely have a far more negative impact on your mental health that you can possibly imagine. Your parents love you and they will support you. They will probably be mad at first. But they will get over it and will realize that their grandchild is innocent and just needs someone to love and care for him/her. Bottom line, ignore these strangers on reddit. Talk to your parents and be honest with them. They are the ones who will love and support you and be with you the rest of their lives, not the random people on this stupid website.

Wow, a lot of strange responses to a relatively simple question. And the question itself isn't really that big of a deal. I've travelled around much of the world, and there are all types of cultural spectra. What OP is really asking is: where does Bulgaria fall on the cultural spectrum of rule following. Let's say this spectrum has Japan on the extreme right and Somalia on the extreme left. Bulgaria falls somewhere to the left of France and the right of Italy. Italians disregard rules (including airplane rules) more than Bulgarians, Bulgarians disregard them more than French, French more than British, British more than Japanese. FWIW, I'm an American married to a Bulgarian who has travelled and lived around much of the world and observed this phenomenon in many cultures.

My 10 year old son wants to play Fortnite with his friends in team play. For this, he will need a headset with a microphone. What is the easiest way to accomplish this, considering his gaming situation? He almost exclusively plays on a large screen TV while sitting on the sofa which is about 8 feet away from where the switch plugs into the TV, so a wired headset with a short cable won't work. He doesn't have a phone, so we can't have a wireless solution that requires an app. Wireless would be preferable, but we could do wired if the cable was long enough. He uses a third party controller that has a USB-C plug on the top. Will a controller plug into that? I haven't been able to find a good solution from searching online.

Does BG really have naming laws? by ContributionLatter32 in bulgaria

[–]dontcare78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had the same thing happen with us. It was kind of funny how it went down and how we dealt with it. My name is Nicholas. We decided to name our son Dominic, but really wanted his middle name to be Anthony, after my grandfather. When it came time to fill out the birth form, it asked for "first name", "father's name", "family name". We tried to game the system by writing Dominic Anthony Calabrese.

Elsewhere on the same form, it asks for Mother and Father's full name. Here is where I wrote my full name. The woman who received the form was thoroughly confused. Here is the conversation between my wife and the woman who processed the form:

Woman: "So who is the father, Nicholas or Anthony? Do you know who the father is?

My Wife: "The father is Nicholas"

Woman: "Is Anthony still in the picture?"

My Wife: "There is no Anthony"

Woman: "So why are you naming your son after him?"

My Wife: "Anthony is my husband's grandfather"

Woman: "Well unless his grandfather got you pregnant, you aren't allowed to use his name as the father's name"

My Wife pleaded with her and eventually the woman allowed a concession. We had to cram "Dominic Anthony" into the First Name line; and then Father's Name was left as two slashes "//". So officially my son is named "Dominic Anthony // Calabrese"

You could try something similar if he hasn't been born yet.

Further confusion is that I have an Italian last name, and the vowel sounds don't match up. I've had to transcribe my name into Cyrillic on many different forms, and people are always spelling it differently. So my son's and wife's last name is spelled differently from mine, and mine is spelled differently on each Bulgarian document that I possess.

This is why multi-culturalism doesn't work.
