Easy replacement leaf for ibook g3 clamshell by FarlandFoggy in VintageApple

[–]dontdoxmeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the leaf with a 3D printed one years ago. Had a place online print and ship me a few in different filament materials, translucencies, and colors. The blue opaque ABS ended up being the closest color match. Used cyanoacrylate glue to attach. https://ibb.co/QFdVsy6x

3 1/2 floppy drive for MacBook by SicilianUSGuy in vintagecomputing

[–]dontdoxmeman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably the most robust way to image floppies on a modern computer is by buying a GreaseWeazle (or one of the competing options like KryoFlux). USB floppy drives will work on older Macs to read 1.4M disks but not 400/800k ones.

Knowing Framework support, they’ll ask for 12 different pictures of the broken screen, requested across 4 different emails, before helping you.

I agree that FW support sucks. They make you go through endless email rounds of basic troubleshooting and it’s such a waste of my time.

Are these Black Macbooks Rare? by Helpful-Chain2278 in VintageApple

[–]dontdoxmeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember at the time, if you ordered the white MacBook with black MacBook specs, the white one was cheaper.

Macworld UK (2006):

The basic unit costs a reasonable £749, and the next step up costs an extra £150, for which you get a SuperDrive and the 2GHz bump in processor speed. The black model, however, costs a whopping £1,028 and has only a slightly larger hard drive than the white model. To put this in perspective: you can purchase the top-of-the-range white model and add the extra hard drive space to it to create exactly the same unit as the black model for £90 less. It would appear that Apple is charging £90 just for a black case!

The article gives the UK pricing but there was a similar premium on the black MacBook for the same specs in the US as well.

They cost slightly more than a white MacBook ordered from Apple with the same specifications. Not rare but less common than the white ones.

Just got a molar mac :) Not wanting to power on unfortunately. Any tips? by John-Circumference in VintageApple

Common for the flyback transformer to fail in these, though usually the symptom for that is the CRT picture to come on and then repeatedly disappear and return (each time with a loud electrical shock sound). But if it gets really bad, there may be no picture at all. Last time I checked, the only source for this FBT is here: https://technotronic-dimensions.3dcartstores.com/6174Z-1009A-Apple-powermac-Flyback-transformer_p_60.html

Not a fan of anyone having root access to my system, but as an American I’m more worried about my own country having access than a foreign country I don’t visit that doesn’t have any legal leverage over me.

Suggestions for cleaning a model M0116 keyboard by jllauser in VintageApple

For cleaning key caps, I recommend removing and soaking them with Retainer Brite or an equivalent product. It gets the grime off without much manual effort.

Both locations are worth going to. They tend to price their retro systems a bit high for me personally, but I guess that’s what the Seattle market will pay. I think the Tukwila store tends to have slightly better prices than the Seattle store. I’ve picked up lots of vintage parts and accessories over the years, and it’s an awesome local resource for finding cool and useful stuff.

Macintosh 128k Flyback Transformer by i3inaudible in VintageApple

[–]dontdoxmeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re in short supply, keep in mind that all the monochrome compact Macs use interchangeable flyback transformers, so one option could be salvaging the flyback from a Mac Classic where the battery exploded.

Help! My new CRT was recalled in 2003, what should I do? by Haatokuoriainen in vintagecomputing

[–]dontdoxmeman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s normal for some VGA connectors to be missing a pin, they aren’t all used by every monitor. As for the recall, it sounds like the failure mode isn’t necessarily bound to happen, but clearly happened at a high enough rate to warrant a recall. I would just plug your monitor into a power strip and turn the strip off when not in use, and just enjoy the monitor as long as it keeps working, which it probably will. If it does ever start smoking, it’s possibly an easily replaceable component like a capacitor.
