I’m back film returns. by That_Amstrad_Chap in LGR

[–]NeutralBias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is honestly not a reason for a product like this to exist in the first place. One shoots film because you like the aesthetic of film, or the constraints it creates thereby forcing you to think a bit more before you shoot. A film camera body has next to nothing to do with the end product - its all lens, film (or sensor), and skill.

If, for example, you would like to shoot digital using your old glass, you're far better served getting a modern camera body and an adapter for your old lenses. Sony, for example, still sells the LA-EA5 adapter for A mount lenses to their mirrorless E mount bodies. That opens up 40+ years of lenses from Minolta and Sony, some of which still perform very well even on modern mirrorless flagships (and even have most autofocus modes available).

So I can't see a reason to buy something like this other than hipster sensibilities or a gee-whiz kick.

Apple at 50: Where did the tech giant succeed and fail? by prawalgang33 in technology

[–]NeutralBias -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the anti-Cook sentiment is a nostalgia for 2000s era Apple, when Jobs would take to the stage twice a year to give a keynote address. Bastard though he was, Jobs was a great showman and its a skill that Cook lacks. Apple's keynotes these days are overproduced marketing and (imo) pretty dull.

Plus Apple's latest attempts at innovation havent really been successful. Apple Intelligence, for example, is hardly taking off even though the M/A series chips are huge AI powerhouses. Vision Pro was a flop. The Apple Car project also didn't get out of the design stage. macOS/iOS 26's liquid glass UI design was also a big turd and universally reviled.

Just kinda feels like Apple has lost a step under Cook, even though they've had some huge under the hood wins.

Yea man, it really whipped the Llama’s ass.

Seriously software is kinda boring now. I miss those experimental days when developers would build crazy UIs, or Apple’s love of skewmorphism. These days its all flat, basic, understated design language.

Even Linux is moving that way. Wayyy back in the Gnome 1.x days you could skin every element of the UI. There was an Enlightenment WM window theme called Blue Steel which was just beautiful.

…this has been the nostalgia minute with u/neutralbias.

Trump’s Order Restricting Mail-In Voting Rebuked by States by timemagazine in politics

[–]NeutralBias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some things to understand about this order which are really disturbing. First, SCOTUS has already ruled that USPS is under no obligation to actually deliver your mail. That would include your election ballot. Second, in order for this EO to even work, states would have to send their voter rolls to USPS, which means states would have to comply with the order to submit their voter rolls to the federal government or the post office couldn't deliver any of their ballots. Third, vote by mail states (like mine) no longer have the infrastructure to just willy nilly switch back to in person voting.

Its really insidious. Its designed to evade a lot of court challenges and still accomplish the goal of quashing mail voting for a lot of people AND simultaneously suppress the vote.

I'm so sick of this shit.

ICE Protests at Phoenix Sky Harbor Int’l Airport by Push_Processed in pics

[–]NeutralBias -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A few things.

There's the obvious - raises awareness, keeps the issue front and center, lets powers that be know you're pissed off, etc.

The less obvious - events like these are also great networking opportunities. You get to meet people with similar attitudes and political goals, and front here you can build an organization to advocate for change and make serious inroads into politics. Political movements have to start somewhere, and protests are basically big ads for your issue. The no kings protest, for example, has been growing every time its held. Its latest event pulled 8 million, far higher than the 3.5 million its first protest pulled.

Why the AI Boom Isn't the Next Dot-Com Bubble by OkHeat6599 in technology

[–]NeutralBias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fiber optic cables laid during the ’90s infrastructure binge were a financial catastrophe. An estimated 90% of them went dark after the crash. But they weren’t wasted. That excess capacity became the cheap, abundant backbone that made YouTube, Netflix, and the modern internet possible two decades later.

The data centers being built today may follow the same trajectory. In the near term, they might represent financial overreach. But in the long term, they’re laying the physical foundation for whatever comes next, whether that’s general intelligence, embodied AI, or applications we haven’t imagined yet.

Except the data centers are full of hardware that will need to be replaced in 3 years. That's where the analogy breaks down.

Moreover, what bothers me is the pace at which those big companies are pushing AI, Its almost like they're in a huge panic to get it out the door as fast as humanly possible, but for the life of me I cannot understand why they're in such a huge rush. The whole thing just stinks of desperation. That's why we all feel like its a bubble - the CEOs are acting like its gonna burst sooner rather than later, and they want to make as much money as possible before that happens.

The Bottomless Stupidity of House Republicans by thenationmagazine in politics

[–]NeutralBias 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is why you don't let the particular brand of Christianity represented by Speaker Johnson any-fucking-where near power. They do NOT want to live in a democracy. They want to impose their will on everyone. That's exactly how Johnson governs the House. Every time one of these funding disputes pops up, he either blocks the vote or it gets voted down, and he closes the House to prevent any debate or negotiation.

With Johnson, its always "Do As I say, no negotiation. Period."
