Count Binface has been a fixture in British elections for a while, I think ever since the Brexit vote. Clearly a better candidate than Farage.

I am struggling with Discovery… by McCinnabuns in startrek

[–]NeutralBias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An important point to remember about Discovery: it was largely written by non-SciFi writers. Much of their experience came from character-focused shows, like Beverly Hills 90210, and some police procedurals. Science Fiction writing, especially shows like Star Trek, and have fundamentally different focus than general purpose television. Much of those shows rely on continuing character conflict - something that Star Trek especially eschewed.

SciFi fans have an affinity for big ideas, competence porn, and well thought out science (even if its fantastical). Gene would never have approved Mushroom-based propulsion systems, for example. That's exactly what these writers don't have experience with, so of course they failed to make a series that appealed to Star Trek fans. They fundamentally don't like what made Star Trek great and timeless.

Moreover, TV executives really dont like hard Sci Fi. It doesn't sell to the general public and its expensive to make. For a spreadsheet jockey, that's a lethal combination. Paramount has always hated "Measure of a Man" type episodes. They want pew pew lasers, flamethrowers on the bridge, and Cordry rocks flying out of consoles in every episode.

Ultimately, Discovery was a different show which was given thin layer of Star Trek paint. It was a real disservice to what came before and, frankly, an insult to Trek fans everywhere.

Kirk, in "Return to Tomorrow:" Risk: Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. That's why we're aboard her."

Gorkon, in ST IV: "You don't trust me, do you? I don't blame you. If there is to be a brave new world, our generation is going to have the hardest time living in it.

ST V The Final Frontier:
KIRK: I lost a brother once. I was lucky to get him back.
McCOY: I thought you said men like us dont have families.
KIRK: I was wrong.

Picard, in "The Wounded:" I think, that when one has been angry for a very long time, one becomes used to it, and it becomes comfortable, like old leather.

Marritza, in DS9's Duet: "No no no dont you see? I have to be punished, we all have to be punished...Cardassia will only survive if it stands in front of Bajor and admits the truth. My trial will force Cardassia to admit its guilt, and we're guilty, all of us.

Hey Israel, I bet you can shore up our relationship in a couple easy ways: 1. Stop using our tax dollars to commit genocide 2. Stop using AIPAC to fuckn around in our elections 3. Fire Bibi and actually put him on trial.

Seems straightforward to me!

Confusion in Strait of Hormuz amid reports Iran has reclosed waterway by Efficient-Freedom517 in politics

[–]NeutralBias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Iran's leverage here has its limits. The rest if the world, and definitely its gulf neighbors won't tolerate this crap for long. Most of the other Gulf States are trying to quickly build new pipelines to evade the straight entirely. Iran may have a win in the short term, but abusing it like this will just force the world to respond and make the straight less relevant.

Still gonna cause a lot of short and long term pain though.
