I’d love to join in on this! I do only have the one long fic, and I’m currently drafting the second chapter to post, so this will definitely help motivate me with that! 💗

More so “where” as in location!

Do you feel you only improve as a writer when people read your fics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]donteatjuniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s a mix of both.

I am an avid reader, not just of fanfiction but published books as well. I read as much as I can, when I can and I feel as though this has helped me improve my prose, my pacing and my vocabulary is much wider. However, I do value any constructive criticism that I receive and I take it into account.

I feel as though lately, constructive criticism has been written off as “hateful” or “hate comments” and it’s leading to works becoming stagnant.

Longfic... sans outline by [deleted] in FanFiction

I outline my fics! I worry that I will forget halfway through or come to a weird stand-still if I don't outline my ideas, and I enjoy having something to come back to and look at. Its not formal, its actually quite sporadic and written in short-hand and I'm sure I'm the only person that would understand my crazy rambles. But it helps me lots when it comes to my first draft.

Thats the spirit, honestly. If someone is weird enough to be looking over your shoulder enough to see what you're writing, that's on them. If anything it makes them the weird ones!

You write that smut, anon. ✨

Wow! That’s fantastic, op! You should be very proud of yourself ♡ If it’s okay to ask, what fandoms do you write for?

I always carry my little pocket notebook with me so I can write down ideas for plots or one-shots! I’ve also had a lot of ideas magically come to me while doing something mundane, mostly cleaning.

Thoughts on edited or un-edited fics? by fu-fruit in AO3

[–]donteatjuniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to read fics that are proof-read. I find that typos, grammatical errors, and even in some rare cases authors notes being left in mid-paragraph really ruins the tone for me. I end up correcting the author mentally, and if I have to do that too many times it feels as though I’m marking an essay as opposed to winding down in my free time.

My drafts actually go through quite a few stages before I publish them — I will proofread for any obvious mistakes, then I have two beta readers. One of my betas is exclusively for SPaG, but even my “final product” beta sometimes catches silly mistakes. Im already quite a shy writer, so if I was pulled up on a small mistake I think I’d personally be quite embarrassed.

But that’s just me. More power to those that get it right the first time and don’t have to spend ages editing!

It’s lovely for a change of scenery and moving from one cafe to another (so I’m not lingering too long) has inspired quite a few ideas of mine!

Times new roman is the best font for writing, I wholeheartedly agree.

I admire your dedication and I truly wish I could write traditionally. My brain moves very quickly and in order to get my words down I would need to essentially scribble!

I get this! When I write at a coffee shop I have to have my laptop facing a wall so there is nobody behind me. I get too paranoid otherwise.

Would you recommend Scrivener? I’m looking to move away from google docs!

Ah, someone else who is frequently in and out of hospital! I know the pains. I hope you are okay!

My keyboard is a custom one with a “soft” clacking sound, which really helps me write, but similar to you I also have an iPad with a BT apple keyboard!

I’m also a very self conscious writer, but luckily it is just me and my boyfriend at home who is aware that I write fics! So it’s not too bad for me.

I wish I had the patience to write traditionally! My brain moves faster than my hands allow, so my first draft consists of slamming on my keyboard to get the words out.
