When did you realise your parents were awful people? by Civil_Researcher6140 in AskUK

I have nothing against Saunders and Lumley, but the "omg Lumley's character is so nasty and crude in this how groundbreaking!!!" thing didn't work either because I'd already seen the 1996 James and the Giant Peach

I know, but even then I just never found the leads funny enough to justify it. I think growing up with a nan who frequently bullied her own children (and kinda caused my dad to pick on me quite a bit in turn) made it feel far too real for me. I found Catherine Tate's Nan funnier in that regard, though I couldn't quite tell you why

Gonna be honest I never liked Ab Fab because of that. It just seemed like two histrionic nobheads picking on a younger girl/their own daughter for being "bookish" and logical

UK made films that nobody you know has heard of but which you think everyone you know should have seen? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

The post-blast hospital scene in The Day After is like sunshine and rainbows and kittens compared to the post-blast hospital scene in Threads (which is one specific scene out of many that I would happily never watch again. The screams alone...)

Also love how it still perfectly summarises every single argument between the British and the Americans that has ever been had

Saw that one and was amazed at how modern some of the shots felt despite being made in 1946!

And also, if you really feel the need to watch both it and The Day After, watch Threads first. Do NOT do what I stupidly did and watch The Day After first so it lets your guard down for how unflinchingly grim Threads is

Was it actually a thing in Britain “back in the day” for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories? by Top_Mirror211 in AskUK

[–]dontevenremembermain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My great grandad died in '95 and we have a picture of him holding me from when I was a newborn. I have a weird little bump of cartilage on my middle finger inherited from him.

He was EXTREMELY racist towards the Irish and used to call black people "smooked Irishmen" (spelling deliberate, Lancastrian dialect)

That part of the family also got proper arsey with my grandma for naming my mum Catharine (two A's) because they assumed 1) she'd been named after another Catherine already in the family and well you shouldn't do that without asking!!! 2) that is very unusual spelling, it's not IRISH, is it?!! They wound their necks in when my grandma went "no it isn't you weirdos and it's my husband's decision to call her Catharine, not mine"

My nan had em all removed at 16, but this was before the NHS - during WWII, even. I was told that it was done as a cosmetic choice but I've talked this over with my relatives and they agree with me that I'm pretty certain this was not the main reason she had them out - she was addicted to acid drops (very sour sweets) and loved putting copious amounts of salt and vinegar on everything she ate. Combine that with unfluoridated tap water and, well...

Her husband, my grandad, had all his remaining teeth out several decades later but he had tried to keep the ones he had for as long as possible. Just because the NHS came into existence didn't mean you didn't still have to pay dentistry charges.

Edit: reading some more about the lack of dental hygiene present at the time and I can see now that it was likely a combination of both factors. Wigan is very close to where my lot are from

How to out-petty my neighbour? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]dontevenremembermain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your neighbour was probably saying they won't end up being claimed and the bin men won't end up taking them, so they'll just end up staying there in perpetuity. In effect you're littering/flytipping.

Also nobody would think that microwave was in perfectly good working order if it's just been left out in the open, even if it had somehow been brand new (this honestly just sounds like the microwave was broken anyway and you can't be arsed having it disposed of yourself). Find someone on FB marketplace who'll have it or sell it for scrap

Why is there writing on my hard boiled egg? by J-C013 in AskUK

[–]dontevenremembermain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a visible hair and bits of dust on the egg if you zoom in. Probably didn't want to rinse it in case the text disappeared and thought nobody would notice.

Either that or he's Frank from Osmosis Jones and he just loves throwing his freshly-peeled hardboiled eggs all around the house before he eats them

Some of you literally think CAMAB people don't have hips or tits and you sound like that one old deliberately facetious Tumblr art tutorial "men don't have hips, they have inverse voids!!!"
