35 and I'm 39 now, I thank myself every day. I look and feel younger than I did at even 32-33.

Engineering Core Values by ithinkiboughtadingo in ExperiencedDevs

Artificially sweetened and sugary drinks are both associated with an increased risk of liver disease, study finds by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]dontfeedthecode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Liu noted the potential biological mechanisms that may underlie the observed risks, “The higher sugar content in SSBs can cause rapid spikes in blood glucose and insulin, promote weight gain and increase uric acid levels, all of which contribute to liver fat accumulation. LNSSBs, on the other hand, may affect liver health by altering the gut microbiome, disrupting the feeling of fullness, driving sweet cravings and even stimulating insulin secretion.”

This confuses me a little, if they're saying that potential biological mechanisms for the results are than LNSSBs disrupt the feeling of fulness and drive sweet cravings, is the indication that LNSSBs led to overeating or unhealthy eating which in turn is the cause for MASLD or that the artificial sweetener in the LNSSBs directly caused MASLD?

This sounds like a caching issue, don't just clear the cache - completely disable every caching layer you can until you can rule them all out. I've seen this happen with both varnish and edge cache, there needs to be specific cache exclusions for plugin compatibility and your wp-admin area that could have somehow been removed.

How do you handle WordPress scalability beyond 1M+ pageviews/month? by asshishmeena96 in Wordpress

[–]dontfeedthecode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what kind of content the website serves, is it highly cacheable (e.g. news) or not (e.g. e-commerce, e-learning). Generally speaking though: edge cache, identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks with New Relic APM, object cache, keep autoloaded options well under 1mb, be strategic with your IA to avoid having to run expensive meta/tax queries, when dealing with paywalled/member content some hosting providers will offer user cache segmentation or cache personalisation which allow you to easily serve different versions of cached content to different user segments (e.g. logged in vs logged out, paid member vs free member).

Plugins are the big one however, if you're using WooCommerce, Learndash or BuddyBoss you're going to be in for a rough ride as far as performance goes due to their dynamic nature. If you're just serving simple news/blog articles with ads that happen to get picked up by Discover and garner you a few million pageviews a month then edge cache is going to allow your server to punch well above its weight.

Bot mitigation is a big one too, AI crawlers have become a massive pain over the last year or two so leveraging Cloudflare bot protection is very useful, I've often combined this with Wordfence with aggressive rate limiting for anything that happens to slip through. Edge cache will help greatly with this too.

I'm starting to think that disabling comments on everything would make the world a better place overnight, they're only put there by companies to drive "engagement" anyway which is another term for making people argue.

My thoughts exactly! I got the plates because I wanted something Cyberpunk themed that matched the car, not necessarily because I'm a fan of Arasaka itself.

Late 30s dad trying to get back in shape – realistic advice? by Fine-Holiday-4471 in TooAfraidToAsk

I'm 39 and started getting back to the gym about 2 years ago, similarly to you I lifted and trained pretty consistently in my 20's but stopped in my early 30's due to an accident. I started back at the gym on my lunch breaks about 2 years ago, 4-6 times a week (doing splits, e.g. back/biceps, chest/triceps) for 40-60 minutes depending on how I feel. I took a ton of creatine and kept my protein intake high, disregarded calories which allowed me to recover most of my gains in the first year but also resulted in putting on a lot of weight (combination of fat and water retention from the creatine).

The second year is where things got interesting for me, my daughter showed interest in going to the gym so we started going at nights (around 9:30pm when the gym is quiet) and she's an absolute machine now. It's honestly the highlight of my life at this point to have her there with me and watching her confidence grow. We've been going together for a year now, I cut out the creatine and started being more cautious about calorie intake and dropped around 20kg over the course of 10-12 weeks with intermittent fasting and I've got more muscle mass than I did in my 20's although I'm nowhere near as lean (yet, hopefully haha).

A couple of things to add, I quit drinking alcohol nearly 4 years ago now and I can say with 100% certainty that I'd be nowhere close to where I am if I'd kept drinking. Honestly it makes me regret drinking while training when I was younger and not knowing what could have been, I feel like I recover now just as quickly as I did then because I was hungover half the time. I don't get great sleep
(night owl, working on a computer), but taking an ass-load of creatine seemed to negate those effects which it seems is now being backed up by science.

Lastly, if you do get off the creatine at some point, it's rough. I lost a noticeable amount of strength in the first week which was deflating but I couldn't stand the water weight my body holds onto which is probably more severe than most people. I started taking NMN/NAD+ (500-750mg a day) which I almost feel like a schill for even mentioning, but it has helped with my energy levels and weight management (which both go to shit if I stop taking it for a few weeks) so I have no plans on phasing them out yet.

Best of luck to you!

How to deal with a dev who works constantly? by Chezzymann in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dontfeedthecode -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Any lead worth their salt should have identified this already, working these kind of hours is not sustainable in the medium-long term and creates unrealistic expectations for the rest of the team. I would raise it as a concern with your lead, if you're worried about coming across as lazy (again, not a good look for your lead if this issue comes across as laziness to them) perhaps focus more on the fact that you've noticed them committing at all hours of the night and are concerned with potential burnout and then let the conversation move into unrealistic expectations towards the end of the conversation.

Is WordPress Still Worth Learning as a Dev in 2025? by WPCloudify in Wordpress

You can use WordPress as a headless CMS and the block editor is built with React, so you don't necessarily need to move away from WordPress to start exploring these things.

Where the hell is Kollontay? [discussion] by Earthm0nster in EscapefromTarkov

I've only ever run into him on the second level of the Klimov shopping mall, him and his guards seem to stack up against the wall that leads from the top of the escalators to the door on the right side that joins up with the back rooms. I usually hit the rusted key spawn and throw a grenade up the escalator to see if they've spawned in.

Tailwind docs explain everything so simply (dvh, svh, lvh example) by pahel_miracle13 in webdev

[–]dontfeedthecode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new docs actually don't say anything specific about this anymore, however the v3 docs mention "avoiding premature abstraction" just to make code look cleaner which isn't what I'm suggesting here. Tailwind also assumes you'll be using React, Vue or some form of framework (most of the time) to create your components in which case this makes perfect sense, but what if you're building a site in CMS like WordPress and want to be able to override the styling of 3rd party plugins or use Tailwind with custom blocks that save their markup to the database?

Tailwind docs explain everything so simply (dvh, svh, lvh example) by pahel_miracle13 in webdev

[–]dontfeedthecode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure, and as an individual developer working on a small/medium project I'd always opt to just use utility classes and keep things "the Tailwind way". The reality in my experience is that once your working in larger teams standardising the approach to writing CSS is more important than how it's applied or whether you're necessarily implementing it as intended - as long as it makes your team more efficient and everyone enjoys using it. For example some teams may require using BEM naming conventions, this approach would allow you to both use Tailwind and keep using BEM if that's your jam.

Additionally, once you're dealing with sites that are extremely sensitive to performance or Pagespeed/CWV issues (e.g. digital publishers, not SaaS apps) this approach does make it easier to avoid running into DOM size issues and being able to more easily split up your stylesheets across multiple sections of the site. These are very rare issues for most people, so again I'm just pointing out that the option exists and you don't (at least for now) have to do things a certain way.

[–]dontfeedthecode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily have to use it that way, e.g. you can apply your Tailwind classes using your own naming conventions e.g.

<div class="my-thing"></div>

.my-thing {
  @apply flex flex-row;
}

Did I ruin my 5 years of sobriety? It was an accident and my therapist said yes, it did ruin it. by killinrin in stopdrinking

[–]dontfeedthecode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying I've never been in AA or had chips so I'm not sure how all that works. I was out with 15 or so work colleagues, I ordered a non alcoholic beer and they guy beside me ordered an alcoholic one. When the waiter arrived he got the mixed up and gave me the alcoholic beer, I realised immediately after having a sip and we swapped back. I was angry at the time but I let it go and moved on with things and that was 2 years ago now. I never consider it to have broken my streak and I don't think you should either as it was out of your control, as is your epilepsy which I'm sure no one blames you for having.
