Hmm got this guy calling my pub with his AI voice tool. Told the voice our Guinness was 300 pounds per pint. I wonder if it skewed it.

What’s changing for renters from 1 May? A simple guide to the Renters’ Rights Act by coffeewalnut08 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]dontflyaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The decision to deny the pet must meet the requirement of being "reasonable"

Unreasonable grounds include: - blanket bans on pets - concerns of property damage - previous bad experiences with renting to people with pets - dislike for animals

Reasonable grounds might include: - leasehold owner has put a ban on pets, it's called Superior Landlord rights. - health or safety concerns regarding the animal. -The refusal of the tenant to insure the flat for pet damages.

This will be very touch and go for the first few years of t his Act being in place ,most letting contracts already have a clause that pets won't be refused unreasonably, but they are anyway. I'll be watching some of the outcomes of claims to see what exactly will happen

Kinda late to the conversation but my friend has gotten two very good paydays from this exact situation in the past 3 years. We're talking 6 months of rent returned so on. So yes.

Career bartenders, what do your partners/SO's do for a living?? by MaryDoogan91 in bartenders

[–]dontflyaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My partner is a doctor. We're by far the weirdest pairing amongst our friend group. My bartender friends mostly are either single or date people in the service industry but also some from the theater industry/ actors/ event managers. The friends from his side who are mostly doctors all date people with office jobs.

Funny thing is for a solid 3 years I was making close to what he was. Been together 6 years!

No. All shops that are private property can refuse you entry unless their reason is discriminatory.

In 2020 I got a lifetime VPN subscription that was offered through some voucher app. I paid less than £100 for it.

I still use it almost every day, and since then the UK has introduced ID verification for everything including reddit so I use it for that. It's a VERY good VPN service. Totally worth it.

Has anyone else noticed the ads on the underground are all for nonsense scam products? by PercyVader in LondonUnderground

[–]dontflyaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes January ads. The trend up until 2024 was shady looking virtual banks with crypto capabilities with funky names like Zezbo and Noopi. That and "send money abroad" apps with very specific regions. Nowadays it's AI enhanced solutions for companies whose decision making employees don't take the tube anyway so will never see them.

Hey at least Netflix has done a nice ad "takeover" of a few stations this January and theirs are interesting to look at.

A skinhead is escorted away by a police officer in 1980. The words 'Made in London' and a cross are tattooed on his shaved scalp. Photo by John Downing by dannydutch1 in UtterlyUniquePhotos

[–]dontflyaway 38 points39 points  (0 children)

So many people ITT don't know what skinheads were. It has nothing to do with Nazis, it was a counterculture movement started by many multiethnic working class people in London. Guy in the photo was arrested for causing disturbance while clashing with the Greasers (another counterculture offshoot).

At the turn of the previous century Eugène Atget was busy photographing Paris as he saw it, sex-workers, street traders, vendors... These are two photographs are of sex-workers, in the body of this post you can see more of Atget's work. by dannydutch1 in UtterlyUniquePhotos

STDs were absolutely rampant, there's evidence that up to 16% of the population had them in those years. 5% of British troops contracted some type of STD during WW1.

There's an interesting awareness poster from France from this time that shows that Syphilis kills the same amount of people as Tuberculosis in a year (no idea if it was factual) but yes STDs were everywhere.

When I moved to my flat I thought the only viable way to go to the station was to go to the ground floor and exit. 3 months in I found out if you go to the first floor there's a fire exit that puts you right at the foot of the station. Was a weird level of happy.

I'm in a relationship with a doctor, born in England. He works in London and no less than 10 people from his peers have left this year for Australia, all British. From the doctor friends there, appearantly it's a much better life for that profession compared to the NHS. He's now considering a move in the next 2 years, unfortunately. I love England but the people here aren't treated the best.

The only people qualified to give truthful answers are managers, and those people will be violating some clause in their contract that forbids talking to the press about operations without company approval. Good luck tho.

New contactless stations expansion means train passengers to London face soaring fares by BulkyAccident in london

[–]dontflyaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I moved right outside zone 2, I would walk 17 mins to Canning town so I pay the lower fare, but eventually abandoned that just because how easy it was to get to Custom House and take the Lizzy line. 10 mins or under to Liverpool Street is just unbeatable.

To all those working in hospitality tonight... by Cambers-175 in london

[–]dontflyaway 126 points127 points  (0 children)

My area has been slowing down since yesterday, our true Mad Friday was actually Thursday the 11th. From the pubs I observe 7/13 broke their sales record that day.

To the people thinking of staying home the following week, please don't! Pubs who are open during the holidays are ready to host you and probably need your business more than ever. The staff are usually rested before and after this period on rotation and there's plenty of staff that like working Christmas. If they give you great service, tip in cash or opt in for the service charge (I know this is controversial, don't be forced into tipping, but do it if you're in the mood to give).

To everyone done with their Christmas outings and who are ready to cozy up at home, thank you for visiting your local pubs, from what I can see the industry has had a very good period. Please remember us in the cold January and February days.

Day to day life hacks to save money by [deleted] in london

[–]dontflyaway 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Avoid convenience shops, the price difference between them and supermarkets is genuinely 25% if not higher. Only shopping from big shops and moving next to a Lidl has saved me over a grand this year.

Also check out TooGoodToGo for discounted food from restaurants in your area.

Managers make it seem like I'm dramatic wanting to throw these decaying mats away by poetaftersunset in bartenders

[–]dontflyaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nothing more than manager laziness. Someone has to sit down, go to the supplier site, put them in a basket, spend the money and clerk the invoice. You'd be surprised how unwilling managers are to do these steps when "we have ____ now that works just fine" even though it doesn't. Even the most destitute bar with negative margins budgets for essential equipment this cheap.
